A warning, RE: Swine Flu Vaccine....

We just spent almost 6 hours in emergency with our toddler because of this vaccine. She had a severe reaction with a fever (40 degrees), vomiting, shaking and rapid breathing, this happened 8 hours after the vaccine. I feel that parents should be made aware of what this vaccine can do. The scarey part is my DD was not the only one this happened to last night. The emergency ward was full of babies and toddlers with the same reaction! When we first arrive the nurse said, "oh yeah, we're gettting alot of children in with this." We talked to other parents there as well.

I'm not trying to tell anyone not to vaccinate, but maybe think about holding off on this one if you are considering it. With so many reactions at one time, maybe it was a faulty batch.

OH that happend to my sister in law the other day. She was ok in the afternoon but then by night she had a temp of 41 degree and was not well. Scary

I hope my post doesn't worry you. I'd just keep a close eye on them. The first signs my DD showed (8 hours after the vaccine) was rapid breathing and she felt slighly warmer than normal.

They didn't do much at the hospital. We had to get a uine sample to rule out a UTI, which was a mission. We just had to try and give her water while they kept an eye on her.

She is feeling better, thanks. She's still quite pale and tired, she had started to eat and drink a little though, so that's good.

:hug: I'm sorry you experienced this - it must have been quiet scary for you.

When I read your post, my first thought was a faulty batch. Or it could be these people reacting to the virus... and it this is how they react to the virus, it concerns me how they would react to the virus proper. It will be interesting to see if the batch is recalled.

I am sort of split on the whole swine flu or no swine flu vaccine.......... I think I might take my time deciding. Thanks for the info hun and hope your little princess feels better!

I thought that the flu vax was not a live virus vax so you really shouldn't react like that? I'll be interested to see if we hear anything further about it, I've been told repeatedly by the docs that the flu shot can't make you sick with flu like symptoms, but have seen it over the years at work with the elderly. Big coincidence if they say it was just a coincidence that the hospital had lots of children with the same.

It is really interesting that you post this as quite a few of our prem friends had the same reactions, very very scary time :(

apparantly it is not a live virus but it still prompts your immune system to creat antibodies and so you get some symptoms.. they arent as severe or long lasting (apparantly)

i still dont know if i did the right thing.. i hate making these decisions!

Oh god you poor thing I hope you DD is feeling much much better. There is no way in hell the doctor is getting me with that needle no way. There is no testing on it and to be honest it scares the sh*% out of me excuse the french but it does. My DF tried to talk to me into having it cause I am pregnant and no way lol I wouldnt even talk to him after he sugested it. I really hope she is better and thanks for posting this I hope some people take it seriously enough to rethink about having the shot.

I think this is a little harsh- people have to weigh up there own situations. There are people out there with other serious conditions etc, that could contract the flu and die form complications, having a short reaction to vaccine is a better situation for them than actually contracting the flu and being seriously seriously ill.

While I really feel for hmn and her DD for such a scary experience, I will probably still get myself and my children vaccinated- I work in a high risk profession, and my children both attend school or daycare where they could easily come in to contact with someone who is sick with the flu. I personally would rather risk a reaction- and I can understand that this could be a scary and distressing situation, then risk my either of my children actually contracting the flu and becoming seriously ill. That is a personal point of view, and I am glad that the OP has made this post so I am aware of side effects that could be caused.

:hug: Hollo, don't feel bad, it is a difficult decision to make and you did what you thought was the right thing. I've had the vacc twice now - once last year when it first came out and again last week in the annual fluvax, no problems at all...the numbers of reactions are monitored very carefully at a state and national level and if it was felt there was a high level of risk involved they would change the advisory/recall the vaccines.

I didn't even realise swine flu was still around?! I received a letter from medicare recommending the "flu shot" for the boys, which i won't be getting.

I don't watch the news, read papers or any form of media... so i'm just wondering what the official recommendation is? are they suggesting everyone get the swine flu vax? or just kids? And how prevalent is swine flu?

they are expecting a second wave (which could be worse, but they dont know) around april-ish. they want pregnant people, elderly and children done and those with health probs. also, they sent out a letter at day care and schools outlining a stack of free clinics to get your vax'ing done.

By no means was I saying you shouldn't get the flu vaccine. I haven't heard of a mass reaction happening before with this vaccine, and I am fairly confident that it was a faulty batch or a new vaccine (combination). I wanted to warn parents to make them aware of this, and hopefully others can avoid a reaction. To me this situation doesn't seem like a normal reaction, considering how many it affected last night.
