Wet nappies, sleeping bag and everything else!!

Hi ladies

Not sure why this is suddenly happening, but our boy is doing some serious night-time weeing! So much so that in the morning, he has weed through this nappy, his sleep-suit, his 2.5TOG sleeping bag and all over the sheets! This has been happening for the past couple of nights and I am not sure what the best solution is. Whilst an extra load of washing isn't much fun, I am primarily concerned about the fact that he is lying in wet clothes for a part of the night.

He is currently in Huggies Toddler 'sposies but I am willing to try whatever it takes to sort the problem out (including cloth if necessary).

Any suggestions? TIA x

Is he leaking through the sides, or is the nappy itself saturated to the point it is leaking through the material?

At a guess I would say the nappies are the wrong size/shape. Are you buying them according to his actual weight? Because you may need to go up a size, or even try a different brand. We love the coles ones here, but the eco brand has also been good.

As an avid cloth user, I actually prefer sposies overnight because they hold so much more and keep the wet feeling away from the skin.

Hope you find a solution soon. Otherwise, can you change him again just before you go to bed? Not sure how he goes to sleep, but I always feed DD to sleep, so a quick change, bit of boob and back to bed worked for us.

I have to disagree - DS would outpee a huggies, but didn't with his cloth, and so does DD1, we have some pretty heavy duty cloth nappies though - and they keep the wetness feeling away from the skin.

They usually suggest to go up a size if disposables aren't doing the job - but if you are in toddler size, not sure what comes after that.. LOL.. haven't gotten sposies for a while.

I can recommend some awesome cloth ones for you if you are interested.

We have resorted in the past to buying incontinence insert pads (we get them from the local bulk nappy store), add one into the usual night nappy, this seems to help when the nappy is not up to the task.

We have found however that going up a size and using the Aldi sposies has fixed the problem.

maybe you need to go DOWN a size, toddler are quie big, DD has just gone into them at 13 months and almost 10kg, like arcadia said are they leaking out the side due to gapping around the leg?? other wise invest in a PUL cover for cloth nappies, one with gussetts should prevent leaks.

is he feeding overnight?? DD sometimes leaks from a toddler overnight, sometimes not!
what does he weigh?

DD was leaking through her Huggies (Crawler 6-11kg) when she was 9 months. so i moved up to the toddler size (10-15kg) and that fixed the problem - they were big for her intially but they contained the wees and thats all i cared about - she now fits into them really well and they still hold everything, she is a massive overnight pee queen!. Maybe you need to go up to the walker size which is 13-18kg? - another brand i used to use was Sorbies which have a night nappy that holds up to 12 hrs - they were good in terms of performance, but i found they made my DD's bottom quite red, so stopped using them and went back to huggies

ETA: just saw your DS is 8 months, maybe the Walker would be too big and olive is right, maybe you need to go down a size!? - what size huggies are you in now?

Arcadia, the wee is coming out over the top - so I think it is a case of absolute saturation as opposed to an ill-fitting-nappy issue.

He weighs 12kgs and the Toddler 'sposies are 10-15kgs. I have just checked there website and the next size up is "Walker" (what a joke - he is only 8 months old!). The Walkers are 13-18kgs - so may be worth a go? Will buy a small pack today and give them a run this evening.

MD - Not so sure about other 'sposie brands. I have tried the cheaper ones and he seems to get a slight nappy rash in all except Huggies. So before moving a different 'sposie brand, I would probably "resort" to cloth. I say "resort" because I am lazy and they look like hard work *gets smack over the head from Mel*. The incontinence pads may be an option though. What type do you buy from this purpose (I know there are stacks of different one). Do you put it between their legs or across the front (for little boys?!).

Mel - I wouldn't mind doing a bit of research on cloth options for night-time wetting. I am just a bit worried that they may stay wet and not pull the wee away from the skin as readily as 'sposies do. I am so clueless about them! Which ones would you recommend for massive wee'ers? Perhaps I can do a bit of research? Will also look around BB for info. If I just use them at night will I need all of the associated paraphernalia required for cloth, or just have a couple and pop them in a bucket to soak during the day?

mmmm maybe try the larger size seen as hes 12kg :lol:
otherwise try the aldi, they are thicker so maybe try a bigger size in them for overnight

I second the liners that you can get from nappy outlet stores, I go to Nappyland for them. DD1 was always leaking through until we started toilet training and now she goes to the toilet before bed which helps.

We had the same problems with DS when he was probably the same age?? (Terrible memory) He is 21 months now, and has spent the last 4 nights sleeping through (YAY) and is waking slightly soaked. 12kgs, in Huggies Toddler sposies, so last night i bought the walker ones. Will try them out soon and see how we go.
Woolworths had 2 packs for something like $25? So I got 1 pack of Toddler, 1 of Walker.

Not sure if Mel has got back to you about cloth... DD is a huge wetter and after experimenting, we have found that a baby beehind bamboo nappy with an extra booster and a cover is the best for not weeing through. They don't draw the moisture away like sposies are meant to, but DD rarely gets nappy rash even with a soaked nappy in the morning.

I found the new huggies to suck in the absorbancy department when we have had to buy them. DD pees like anything!

DD outwet every sposie we could find on the market overnight even when we went up a size. The only few times we had leaks with cloth night nappy was when it was clogged and needed a stripwash.

I've just put DS into his brother's sposies of a night for the same reason. He is only 8 months, weighs probably about 10-11kg and is now wearing the biggest size Aldi sposies at night :lol: Not sure what size they are? Junior or something. It is ridiculous but hey, it works!

I use cloth nappies but I gave up on cloth at night time. I couldn't find a night nappy that DS1 didn't out-wee and I couldn't stand the awful smell after a full night.

FWIW my DS spent hardly any time at all in Toddler nappies, he was in Walker nappies from quite early on. The Toddler ones sprung leaks on us all the time but once we moved up to Walker there were no more problems.

DD is just the opposite, she's been in the Toddler ones for months now, but she is a completely different body shape.

We tried a "Walker" nappy last night and no leaks!! So I am very happy! If we have any further issues I think I may take a look at those Baby Beehinds but for now, the issue appears to have been solved :)

Hey Sam, sorry I didn't get back to you. I doubt baby beehinds will be enough if he outpees a huggies - my kids can outpee them in about 3 hours. About 6 at the most with a booster on the outside.

If you want to try something I'll send you up a Genesa Forge Super trim night to try first before you buy anything. They are awesome. Plus, if you are just using one a day, you can throw it in with a load of washing (if you are comfortable doing that) daily.

Thought I would post an update (primarily for anyone searching for a solution to the same problem at a later date) on The Wee-Machine!

We have been through a very damp, rashy and expensive couple of weeks and have, at last, had three dry night and counting.

I tried Aldi and Woolworths Select 'sposies just so that I had fully exhausted my 'sposie options. I tried double 'sposies, sanitary pads, maternity pads, incontinence pads and various combination thereof. I tried fleece pilchers and wool covers over his 'sposies too. The flooding continued!

I bought two Wild Child Night Nappy++'s with wool covers. They were absolutely beautiful and very absorbent - though couldn't stand up to The Wee Machine. So a whole heap of money and disappointment later, they are now sitting, looking very pretty and very absorbant, in our linen cupboard.

We had some success popping the WC bamboo inserts and boosters into his 'sposies, but he still managed to wee through them occasionally. Plus they would really smell because they couldn't get air, obviously.

So, in desperation, I ordered a big box of Nappy Mate disposable booster pads from VIC (not available in QLD) and then visited to shops again to check that I had tried everything on the shelves. I figured I may as well try some of the expensive Huggies Nappy Pants because they boasted an "elasticised waist" which sounded promising.

THEY. WORKED.

So each evening, I now put what I refer to as "Nappy Armour" on The Wee Machine. Here is the recipe (for anyone as desperate as I was):

Take your regular Huggies daytime nappy (in our case a "Toddler") and cut a slit in the front cover.
Place one Nappy Mate in the middle of the nappy and one across the top.
Place tightly on Wee Machine
Take one pair of Huggies Nappypants (one size up from day nappy size - in our case, a "Walker") and place over "Toddler" nappy.
Go to sleep knowing that you won't wake up to a flooded cot and rashy bub the next morning!!
