can't clear up ds red bum

Ds keeps getting a red bum, on his bum cheeks and just under his scrotum. And I can't seem to get rid of it. Cream wise I've tried the papaya stuff, moo goo full cream and the gaia soothing lotion. I'm going to do another strip wash. But any other ideas? I think its worse first thing in the morning so was wondering if there's like a liner I can pop in his nappy? He wears a maz two up cover with a boosted bbh bamboo fitted. I can't really afford to go buy new nappies so am looking for other options first.

Could it be Excema (sp?)? A mix of too much moisture and warmth overnight?

Caking on Sudo cream before putting on the bedtime nappy used to work for DD's bum.

when my boys get red bums I use lansinoh (sp??) the bb cream works a charm and usually only needs one application

You can get fleece and paper liners - I found paper worked best especially with sudocream, as that stuff can cling to fleece, ruining the liner.

Your DS may be old enough now to go nappy-free for an hour or so at a time: can you have him play outdoors without a nappy on? Minimal cleaning up for you in case of accident and not being in a nappy for a while can help sore bottoms.

What washing powder are you using? He might be allergic to that and it is showing up more in his butt area because it is always wet?

I used disposables but all my boys got red bums! I caked on sudocream and then caked on baby powder! The sudocream was not enough on it's own. Good luck

I used to have really bad issues with Kameron so much so that he would bleed that is how red his bum was. I ended up using corn flour which is what mum used on us kids and it worked like a treat. You can also get a cornflour based powder in the baby aisle as well.

My Ds had a rash that wouldn't clear up when he was a baby.. We took him to the chemist and they had a quick look and it was a fungal infection. We were given a over the counter cream and by the time he had 2 applications it was almost gone..

It's often best to treat the cause rather than the symptom. There are a number of options that could be causing the rash. It may take some troubleshooting...

Options:
1. Some kids can develop a suede intolerance. What is the wicking fabric in your nappies, suede or mircrofiber or fleece? Trying a liner, or switching to microfiber lined or fitted nappies might help to see if it could be the fabric. It's not common but does happen.

2. Thrush - Redness will reoccur after every poo. Try a probiotic, either for you if you're BFing or in their formula. You might need to go to the chemist to get an anti-fungal cream to use on the bottom instead. If it is thrush, it is important to treat the source, which is the gut, rather than just the visible symptom of the bottom rash.

3. Wee/Poo is too acidic - if you are BFing check your diet to see if you are eating things that might be too acidic like orange juice, peanuts, that sort of thing.

4. Wee/Poo is too alkaline - happens during teething due to excess saliva. If you're BFing take an acidic vitamin C.

5. Are you using cloth wipes or store bought? Store bought often have anti-freeze as their preservative which can irritate the skin. A wash cloth, cloth wipes or cotton balls and just water would be a better option.

6. Washing powder reaction - this will be easier to tell because it shouldn't be restricted to certain areas of the bottom, but would likely show up around the neck etc as well. But to be safe you can wash just using bicarb soda.

Have you tried bepanthen? Our paed said it was the best nappy rash cream (in his opinion) and we find it's great for DD. We just put some on her every night and she (touch wood!) pretty much never gets nappy rash. She is in sposies though, not cloth.

They are bamboo baby beehinds, not sure if thats the wicking fabric or not :dunno: I had to stop using the paper biodegradable liners as that gave him a really bad rash too.

Don't think its this as his redness is more on his bum cheeks than in the actual bum area, iykwim. all though he did eat a mountain of watermelon on monday and his bum crack was so red yesterday poor thing, although that bit has now cleared up

I'll give this one a go, I did experiment with a different soap powder but went back so whether there's any remnents of that, maybe a good strip wash. Didn't know about bicarb but will try that - how much do you use?


Mumma mia - was wondering if it could be excema? didn't think sudocream and cloth nappies went together :dunno:

I swear by Curash anti-rash powder.
DD had a red bum, and if you use it every nappy change the rash should be gone fairly quickly.

MY DS would get the same rash from his overnight BBH fitteds (which don't have any suede cloth or fleece liner). I stopped using cloth overnight for a while and went to sposies and it cleared up. But have not got my hands on some night nappies which are lined with suede cloth and presto no rash ever! So I think that it is probably the moisture in the BBH fitteds as they don't have a stay dry type lining. Perhaps some home made liners might solve your problem. HTH

Thrush will occur on the checks, not just around the anus. BBH fitteds don't have a wicking layer so could hold the wee to the skin for longer irritating issues even more. Watermellon is high in Phenol (carbolic acid) so could give him acidic/burny wee. I bet you'll find it's option 3 - diet related acidity. Have a smell of his breath. You'll be able to tell if it has a bile-like or sweet smell to it. Probiotics will help, so would drinking milk if he's not allergic, and of course cutting down on the phenol foods. Swallowing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar a day is actually the best treatment but I don't know many kids who would be happy to take it (except my DD, but she's strange - she enjoys things like raw onion too).

It's isn't a cream it is straight cornflour :) apply it directly to the red area.

When all of the above options failed for us we used daktozin cream and it cleared up over night!! :o

We had also been doing lots of salt water baths and wiping pooey bottoms with sal water washers then patting dry. Lots of nappy free time. (bt hard with it gettting colder I know).

My son had a similar rash that would not budge. Turned out it was thrush. Daktokin (sp?) cleared it up in 48 hours and changing our yoghurt brand kept it away.

We've been using daktozin for a few days and for the most part, its cleared up - its just like dry skin now, so I've tried using the Moogoo MSN cream. His little bum is still red though :( think I might have to take him to the doc's to get it checked. Although interesting about changing yoghurt brands, FabFiona - in the last month, he's been having the same yoghurt as DD (Toystory ones, whatever that brand is) but maybe I should change back to the Vaalia one's for babies/toddlers?

Yeddi - we've avoided watermelon for the past week, but still red, although I have noticed he now has a molar coming through and I've always found both DD and DS get a bit redder bum at teething time. What sort of probiotic do you recommend?

I've also started using cloth wipes and water when we're at home, so hopefully that will make help. Just have to go to spotlight and get some material as I only have 6 wipes which were a freebie. Also going to get some microfleece to make liners for nighttime especially.
