Opinions: would you put a toddler in this?

DH and I need a new bed for DS, 19mths.

We want to get some sort of bed-storage-combo thing as his new room is smaller than the other bedrooms in our house.

Google "nemo bedroom furniture" and the link on the Forty Winks website is the one we are thinking about.

I'm worried he's going to fall out though.

DD never fell out of her bed... DS is about the same as her in terms of activity level in the cot...

Would you be worried? Is it too much for a little toddler? More appropriate for an older boy?

(It's also quite expensive!)

Just had a thought - we could always buy the frame but get him started just on the mattress... hmm...

I think it's adorable.
But will he have trouble climbing down to the first step?
It's hard for me to see how big the gap actually is

I think its gorgeous, but going purely on what my kids did it would worry me to have them in it at your DS's age. Neither of them ever fell out of bed but both my girls were in the habit of getting out of bed still half asleep to come and crawl in with us, and I'm sure they would end up on their noses.

No reason why you can't buy it and just put the mattress on the ground first though - that way you're only buying the one bed you really want long term for your DS.

Yep same as I would do. DS1 sleeps all over his king single bed upside down, side to side and he has a bed rail as well

It is beautiful I love it!! 40 winks are crazy $$$ thought we looked for a while for DS1 bed.

Yeah I would. Put a rolled up towel or pillow under the sheet where the gap is though.

We are currently ordering a cabin/midi/loft (so many names for that style of bed) bed for our son. He's 2yrs9mths. The one we are getting is from Snooze though (it's called the "Tailor" if you want to look it up) and we love it. We are getting the all white one because I think it will be easy to decorate his room with a white bed. I'm thinking we could probably even stick some of his wall stickers on his bed frame.

I'm a little concerned about him falling out, but the rails are fairly high on the one we are looking at, and he doesn't tend to move much at night. We're going to stick a mattress on the floor at first though. I think the biggest falling risk is going to be if he is playing around on the bed and the ladder. The ladder can be moved on and off though.

I'm trying to find a similar one for DD, but in white! You could always use a separate bed rail as well if you're finding the built-in rails too low?

We looked at them for dd however she couldn't get to the first step.

I wasn't going to budge on storage but my aunt has double beds for her kids - for "if anyone stays over the girls can sleep together or when they have friends over".

Great idea I said so I went to just kids furniture had a custom bed made (their speciality) we picked colours and all. Had a white double bed with a purple heart panel and matching purple "roller boxes" they are MASSIVE!!! In fact one is almost empty :)

All up $1800 for matching bed drawers and roller boxes. Expensive I know but I was happy

Also look at Bunkers in Blackburn - Divvy put me onto them and I got a bunk bed, with trundle and drawers plus bookcase bedheads for the girls room which was about $1800 all up - 3 beds in one, with storage!

DD1 has a bed similar to that, she got it for her second birthday. We did not give her the ladder though and she can't climb up or down by herself and does not even try. When she wakes she just calls out to us. Her head is also up the end without the gap. She has never fallen out, just bumped her head, legs and arms on the edges when wriggling around. We also never put the desk part together so she uses that as a little cubby for now. Behind the drawers there is a big gap and that is perfect for storing winter blankets in summer:)

I think it looks very cool but I've always been a style over safety person anyway!

Ive also heard good things about bunkers.

Ha - I thought was going to be some clownfish inspired bed with a name like Nemo. Bed itself I would think is ok for a toddler if they are likely to just shout out to get in and out (otherwise it looks a bit big to get up and down but can't tell size that well) - but I would be a bit unsure about the desk bit on castors (maybe like Kazzo says don't use it in the beginning) - I have visions of my DD persuading DS (when is a bit older) to go behind it and then try to push the desk in!!! My two will be sharing a room though so maybe that wouldn't be a problem depending on set up.

At 20 months we put DS into a bed, but we got the reversible bunk from IKEA, its called a KURA
Much Cheaper - we started at floor level and then turned it over to normal bed height, and will turn it over again for a small bunk in a year or two, very flexible so the bed can grown with the child, and DS thinks is the coolest thing ever has it has a tent roof!

You can flip it again so the bed is about a metre or so off the ground, if you have a look at it on the IKEA website you'll get what I mean

I was going to suggest something similar to MummyNaomi - so you can start him out at a lower level, but as he grows you can put shelves or drawers or even a little desk under the bed, and have the bed as a bunk bed.

DS's room is pretty small, so we were looking at options like that, but ended up deciding that it's cheaper to buy a $150 bed now, and a $550 bunk or bed/desk combo later, than a convertable one now ... so that's what we're doing :)

But the planning is fun :)
