Question - do you send thank you notes to people who give you reputation points?
I've never been one to send thank you notes for anything - not because I'm nasty or ungrateful, just because I never thought about it. But I've started doing it (after some not so gentle encouragement from MIL!) and it occurred to me that it might be nice to say a lil 'thank you' to people who take the time to comment on your comments.
Does this make sense? And do you think it's appropriate?

It makes sense, and I think it's a bit like real life thankyou notes, some people do, some don't, and some people only do some of the time.
I don't often, because I feel there's not much to be said. If someone says 'Well said' or 'Great post', I tend to smile, and feel good, but I think I'd feel a bit awkward PMing someone to say, thanks for saying that. I kinda just assume they know it's appreciated.
If someone makes a more detailed comment though, I might PM to continue the discussion. :)
I think it can be appropriate though, so while it's not something that everyone would do (and those who get heaps of rep all the time, or heaps for the one comment would be pretty busy!), I think it's definitely a sweet thing to PM and say cheers!

I had the same question some months back, even with the same title! And yeah, I started replying and saying thanks but I decided not to eventually because I don't expect other people to do it for me, so I don't feel the need to for them. Y'know? It's a nice thing to do though, if you want. But no one will think you're rude if you don't send them a thanks, I believe most people don't.

I did to begin with, but sometimes i'd logged off for a day or two and when i came back there was a whole new page of comments, and with so many more points that there were obviously some that i'd not even managed to read before they got pushed off the bottom (back at the start when you couldn't see as many at once this was) so i stopped because it felt mean to miss people out, if that makes sense.
But i am extremely grateful for all the kind words and comments i've recieved through the Rep system. So a very heartfelt

I don't mind at all if people don't PM when i give points. As far as i'm concerned it's credit where it's due, like Lulu, my love is also worthless, no wait, priceless, no wait....what? lol....

Sometimes I do (if they make a detailed comment) but mostly I don't and I don't expect a thankyou either... but I occassionally receive one, especially if it's the member's first point or if I have explained how the system worked to them as well as giving them a point.
Thanks for the thread, I cleaned out my subscription folder leaving only threads where there had been good advice and reassurance given to me and I decided to tackle giving out the love, I got so far before getting this message...

I've hit the limit a few times.
I've never said thank you, nor expected one. As far as I'm aware/concerned, giving a rep point is you saying "great post, thanks for the help" or "thanks for sharing" or just a "thank you, that meant something to me". I don't say thank you for a thank you, so I don't respond to rep points. Aside from internally, of course. I love them! Give me more! I want to lap up my adoration... because I just like being all nice and helpful, not an ego thing at all. Really.

I don't give rep points to get a thank you but it's nice when I do get a nice little note on my profile page!! Sometimes I have PM'd people to say thank you and to continue the discussion privately but I do make an effort to give rep points to those who give them to me KWIM?
I've got a few blank rep points, and I don't think its 'poor form'. I just don't know what it is they liked! I generally just type what my thought was, that made me give them points :):
I don't think I've ever received a blank Rep point... but lots of very brief ones that say things like "nice one" or just a smilie face.
I usually highlight the part of a person's post that I especially liked such as "I especially liked your last paragraph, well written!" or I often just say "good advice" or "nice support".
