Nicknames as full names??

confusing thread title, i know,but i'm just not sure how else to put it. :doh:

dh has suggested a new name for bubs, but i feel like it's more of a nickname, or a shortened version of a 'real name' iykwim?

i think these days, you could probably get away with it, but i just wonder what peoples' opinions are on the matter. do you think the kid will always get asked what their real name is...and would find that annoying?

i don't want to give the name away, as i'm not looking for opinions on the actual name- but i guess i'll give an example to explain my position a little better :lol:
for eg. if you called your ds Danny- do you think people would automatically assume it wasn't his 'real' name- and that his name was really Daniel?
or if you called a dd Frankie instead of Francesca...
do you think it even matters? or are these kind of shortened names accepted as full names these days?

as someone who's first name is similar (it is a nick for at least three different names) you get used to it and just igore it to be honest! it's much more common now to have names that are "traditionally" nick names (Danni, Bella, Ella, Beth) as first names now - i think most people would just ignore it!

we have a friend who has a Billy and a Sam - not shortened (or lengthened) for anything - and noone thinks their names are anything but Billy and Sam...

I suppose it depends on the name. He is likely to get asked if his name is shortened, but does it really matter?

My sister's name is a shortened version of an old-fashioned name and she gets asked about it a lot, but it may also be because it is usually known as a boys name (just with different spelling)! I used to work with a Steve and that was his given name. Everyone assumed his full name was Steven which I guess would have gotten annoying at times. But I personally don't think it's that big of a deal.

Heck, if you've found a boys name you are happy with then go with it! Boys names are SO hard LOL!

IKWYM. My cousins name is Mark and he gets asked if it's Marcus a bit. I think it bothers him sometimes but he usually shrugs it off.

I have had a lot of people say (on here when i was looking for name suggestions) that they believe babies should only be named what you intend to call them. But I like the opportunity of a nickname so I disagree.

Anyhow, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. My sister is Charli and that is Charli, not Charlotte. I guess it depends on the name, but i think most are okay.

The other thing is, if you name them the 'full version' at least they have the opportunity for choice?

I think its fine. I was going down the Dan path with Chase. Because i like Dan, but not Daniel :)

i'm not such a fan of the full name, but we both really like the shortened version. i would be so annoyed if people called him the full name all the time, so that's just not an option.

thanks for reminding me of the name Billy- BG. that is a similar example to the name we're thinking of. i think it's a great name in itself, but i wonder if most people think it's from William?

trish- yeah i'm thinking along the lines that we both really like the name, so it doesn't really matter what other people think.

I know a Pete & he used to get really annoyed when people called him Peter.

My mum had wanted to call my sister Mandy, but was convinced otherwise so she used Amanda, even now 24 years later my mum only calls her Mandy.

i think there is so much variation out there now that people just won't care! you have people like Sarah who used the full name of Alexzander, but another BB'er who just used Zander - both boys get the same name most of the time i'm sure! i think go with what you like hun - and if people don't get it - stiff!

My DH wanted to name our DD Tori but I couldn't get past the Tori Spelling connection :rolleyes: so we came to the compromise of Victoria which I loved but thinking she would be called Tori once she was born. Funny thing is, it didn't really stick and she is called Victoria 99% of the time.

If you like it go for it! Even if you use a full name and then call your child by a nickname, like we do with Iz, we get "Oh is it Isabelle or Isabella?"! DH's brother is called Ben, it was meant to be Benjamin, (hence one of James' middle names) but my IL's forgot to put the full name on the birth certificate! His mum still calls him Benjamin at times but most people call him Ben. Wow Im rambling but I guess what Im getting at is that if you like it use it, and no matter what there are always those silly questions from silly people about your choice of name! ;)

Hehehehe my boy is Zander - we liked Alexander but knew he would get Alex, which personally (please no offence to anyone!!!) I don't like for a shortened name, hence just going with Zander!

i'm with the thinking you should name them what you think you are going to call them!! - maybe we should have named him Boo then ... oops :ROFL:

You can call your kid anything these days without anyone really blinking an eye. Infact i think nicknames are becoming very common as full names.

A GF had a Billy last year, another had a Jimmy, just those names, not short for anything.

If someone said to me their boy's name was Will, i would think it was Will, not William, not Wiloughby just Will, as that what they said.

My brother's name is Bobby, sometimes he was asked if it was short for Robert, but not often. Doesn't seem to bother him at all. Infact he told Mum recently he likes his name, when she secretly confessed she didn't want to call him that but Dad did! lmao

I think its fine to have a shortened name as a name, as long as its not one of those 'cute' babies/kids names that is silly for an adult IYKWIM? Just think how would that name sound for your child when they are an adult :)

Yeah, I agree with Joeve - as your example Rainy, Danny isn't really a grown up name as such. Although they could shorten it to Dan I suppose. I know a Jamie and that just seems weird for a 30 something year old man (but was fine when he was in primary school!)

I LOVE Will for a name, and wouldn't call my bub William I don't think. I also love the name Lucy...although I don't mind Lucille.
