Make up Lessons??

I must confess that i do not know how to apply make up. :redface:

My mum never used or uses make up so i was never taught.

I don't even know which colour foundation i should use. The only items in my make up bag are eye shadows, lippies and a liquid eye liner which i apply to the best of my ability.

I would love to be able to use foundation, blush, use eye shadows properly but i don't know how to.

Where would i go to get some lessons. Just a few lessons, i guess. Nothing for professional use just personal use.

Any ideas??

OMG Turkish Delight I am exactly the same! I don't wear make up because I don't know how to use it. My mum never wears it, neither does my sister. I would LOVE to wear it but every time I apply it it just looks wrong. If I really need to wear it I always get a friend t do it for me.

I don't even OWN make-up... even if I knew what to buy I just wouldn't know what to do with it! I'd love to pretty myself up sometimes, just on the odd special occasion, but I just have no idea so i don't even bother wasting my money! I don't even know how to put eyeliner on properly!! :redface:

Leasha, i don't even know how to put eyeliner on properly too. I can only do the top eyelid.

I want to be able to use 2 colour eyeshadows and put eyeshadow underneath my eyes too IYKWIM? I want to feel pretty.

I don't even wear makeup to work and am always being told off by my mum to wear some. But how can i when i don't know how too?:rolleyes:

I had a one hour make up lesson at Mecca, around $100, redeeemable on product. The MUA wrote down everything she used. I liked it because they were all different brands, rather than just the one. A couple of things like eyeshadow, I went to The Body Shop and bought the same colour shade, but cheaper.

I would love to go and do something like this too. I wouldn't be able to do it locally, so would have to go out of town, where there is a chemist that use to do some short courses. I can't remember if they used Clinique products or Lancome?? So maybe try a big chain chemist that has big name products as well.

I called Napoleon.

They have 1-1 session instore for $95, totally redeemable on product OR they have a 1 day course for $195 but its not redeemable on product but you get 20% off product on the day.

I will be going to the 1 day session. Waiting for a call back. I am soooo excited. I'm going to feel pretty!

I don't wear make up often and don't really know how to do it. I did a 1 1/2 hour course once, but really I didn't learn much - she gave me a list of colours she used but I was expecting to actually learn to apply it myself.

Be careful of counter lessons, as any dept store counters tend to be a bit pushy on the product and less about the lesson. TBH you'd be better at getting independent lessons. And then later on down the track getting a lesson in colours etc (which is what they mainly discuss at dept stores).

Napoleon have great lessons but the only course I knew about was their $3k one, so I'm not sure about a $95 one.

Mecca is awesome too. But for true non sales pitchy lessons you're best off going through a community centre, or google "personal make up lessons" but try and steer clear of anywhere that is offering them when they are also trying to sell their own product or you could just end up in a major sales pitch.

Before i had children i was a make up artist. I did freelance and also worked for the body shop where i did staff training and make up lessons. They were only 45mins-1hour which i found a little short for the total novice. What you may want to do is go through the phone book and see if any make up artists do them privately, you will likely get a longer session and in your own home which is more peaceful than a busy shop.

My best tip would be to never use those little sponge applicators, invest in a couple of good quality brushes and you'll get a much nicer finish.


edit - yep cai is right, unfortunately all companies have a sales adgenda, they have targets to meet and as much as they may not like it they often have to push products on you.

I will do a google search then. I do agree that it would be best 1-1 and in a non-busy environment.

I am amazaed at the number of girls here that don't know how to apply makeup, i honestly thought that i was the only one and was a bit unsure of posting. I thought ALL women just knew how to do IT. I guess not.

A colours lesson would be a good one too.

i goto mecca about 1 time per year and get them to doa whole look for me... it is salesy but i usually buy a couple of things that i need anyway and it is nice to update what i have... they apply it and do describe what to do (if you ask) and then will keep everything they used on file for you if you want to buy later. as i said they do sell to you but i have always been thrilled with the products and also with the 'looks' they have created.
the idea of a makeup artist teaching techniques is also great!

i LOVE mecca. Totally addicted to their overpriced products. :redface: They have a promo on atm where you can do an hour lesson for $90 redeemable in products (about half a lipstick :p) and a vogue mag subscription.

TOTALLY agree on the brushes - make sure you buy decent ones. I think Napoleon ones are very very nice but exxy. I knew someone trained with Napoleon and it was common knowledge with the students that Body Shop brushes are just as good (if not better) and HEAPS cheaper.

Body Shop brushes are FANTASTIC. I have a full set. They rock.

What I'd recommend is going to the cheapy counter, buying the cheapest eye pencil, lipstick, eye powder, mascara, blush and face powder. Doesn't matter about the colour, but pick one you like if there's a choice. If you can get one of those really cheap all-in-one things with fifty colours in go for that. You'll be throwing this out within a week. Get a good make-up remover with this.

Next, get some glossy magazines. Old ones if you want. Go through and get FIVE different make-up looks you like.

Now go home and spend time trying to copy the look. It will go hideously wrong the first time. I try a new look every few months, copying from the TV usually. Sometimes it doesn't suit, sometimes it does. First time always looks a bit off. But keep practicing!

Within a week, you'll have a look, maybe not using all the different things (ie no face powder if you've got good skin or no blush if you have a natural one; lipliner is always a no-go for me) but you'll be able to apply make-up and know it suits you. I say within a week, maybe within a month if you're working around the children.

NOW you go for a make-up lesson. Learn what colours work. Learn a new way of applying: you'll be used to applying now so seeing what the consultant does very quickly won't be so hard to copy.

OR have a body shop at home party. Ask the consultant to go really slowly and maybe ask if you can film what she does. That way you get some of the stuff she'll use for free if your mates spend enough! Actually, I was a BSaH consultant just for the free make-up lesson day, the brushes that came in the kit and all the make-up that came with the kit: I needed some good stuff for my wedding. That was years ago so I no longer have all the make-up but I do still love the brushes.

Oh, btw, always buy less make-up than you think you need. One eye-shadow palette, one mascara etc. You can buy more but if you buy loads you chuck a load out because after about 10 years or so the powders do go off. Trust me. I had a 12-year-old blusher that really didn't do my skin any favours when I used it again!

I got a phone call from the Napoleon Perdis people this arvo. I'm enrolled to go to the Como Centre in Toorak on the 27th of June for a 1 day course.

I did the $95 lesson with Napoleon and learnt nothing lol, she was far too busy chatting to me about her life than telling me what she was doing and how!
I'm sorry to tell you that I can't recommend their products either, atleast not their foundation. They claim it is waterproof, but even the slightest drop of water on my face sent a huge streak down my cheek, and the make-up stings like nothing on earth if it gets even an inch near your eye! I've searched high and low for the perfect foundation and still haven't found it!

I did the Napoleon Perdis makeup course on Saturday from 10am-4pm. It was FANTASTIC. I recommend to everybody. You do your own makeup step by step. I took lots of notes on every single step.

I was the only student considered a makeup virgin in the beginning but i did the best makeup! Other students were commenting on how i my makeup looked fantastic and that it red carpet material.

DH was stunned when he saw me. People were looking at me on the street too. I looked one million dollars. Had the best time whilst learning.

I purchased $600 worth of product, incl. the brushes. I wasn't going to buy them, but then thought that i wouldn't remember the thicknesses etc.. of all the brushes we used, so i purchased them. I bought foundation, powder, bronzer, concealers, blush, brushes. I'm going to buy their loose eyeshadow pots next. All of them. A few each week. They are all so shimmery. So pretty colours

I went out last night and tried to do it again, and i did it :dance: I did the whole smokey eyes thing and my DH and mum were gobsmacked as to how brilliant my eyes looked.

SO PROUD.

I asked if they had a colours session and they didn't but said that if i could get around 4 people together and each pay $50 they would organise a 2 hour session on colour and the $50 is redeemable on product.

Anyone wanna go ;)

i'll go next year when ds2 is a little older and doesn't need to be on the boob constantly! LOL

Yay good job Turkish!! I love make up; sometimes if im bored at home ill just do it for fun hehe. I've bought a lot of brushes from Avon and they are great!!

Didn't buy the mascara. There are sooo many things to buy i just didnt know which ones to get. I'm going to build up a Napoleon Perdis makeup collection slowly.

I really want the eyeshadows. They look so cool on the under the lower lashes.

I'm going to speak to DH if i can do NP's 9 week course. I could then do free lance work. :pray:
