Hi, we are looking at getting a ragdoll kitten at xmas we are a cat loving family but we didnt want to get a cat before we had a baby. Georgia will be almost 1 at xmas.
I was wondering if anyone one BB has one and if they can give us their opinions or experiences with them.
We are after a cat that likes to laze about and loves affection and have heard that this breed is like that.
I don't have a ragdoll, but my boss does. He has 2 small children, 4 and 2, and he tells us the cat is very timid and laid back sort of thing. He says his girls carry the cat around in a handbag and brush it with there barbie doll brushes and she lays back and laps up the attention. To my knowledge they are very easy going cats, not to be left outdoors (they can't be tough against other cats!) If I was allowed to have a cat, a ragdoll would be my choice. They are beautiful.

My MIL has 2 raggys they are beautiful ctas but they leave hair EVERYWHERE even after brushing them.. My MIL has to have hers groomed a few times year but they stilll lose lot of fur... We cant wear dark coloured clothing to her house coz you get covered in fur.. However in saying that they are beautiful cats worth lot of money so you wouldnt want them to be an outside cat LOL

I used to breed ragdolls but now only breed Boxer dogs
If you are up for the hair and an easy going laid back cat yep go for it....the BIG drawback is the hair though...it gets into EVERYTHING and gets into EVERY nook & cranny!!!! and i mean everywhere.
When they 'blow' their coat they certainly do...and it can go on for quite a while.
They can be abit anti-social with children aswell, BUT having said that they can be great with kids
Fluff do you think if the ragdoll was brought up with kids from the start that they would be ok with them??
We used to have a persian and he lost fur all the time he was black and we had cream carpet so his fur showed up easily - is it really that bad, am I going to have to vaccuum everyday??
They can be great pets bought up with littlies :)
In the end if YOU want to vacume every day/every 2nd day then go for it...i personally couldn't handle having all the hair and little kidlets around, i definatly couldn't handle it again now with another bub crawling now...did it when my eldest was crawling and it was NOT fun.
We are hoping next year to get another puddy tat...a burmese/siamese/tonkinese or egyptian mau.
We have a Burmese. She is wonderfully laid back and loves to snuggle up for lap time.
We had a burmese who had to be put down so I cant bring myself to have another burmese. they are so beautiful though
I love my domestic shorthaired bog standard cats!! they are both great with the kids even though Riley "loves" them quite heartily LOL Also they don't seem to shed much hair.
Tonkinese are VERY similar to burmese BUT alot more vocal...I really want a siamese as i grew up with them as a child...my mum & her father bred them.
We had what we think was a half rag doll half moggy (my moggy cat got very friendly with a neighbours cat and had kittens) She was excellent with children and loved to sit on laps and just get patted. She also 'flopped' when you picked her up and let you do what you wanted with her, so she just would be limp in the kiddy's arms, they loved it! Hair was an issue though, we just brushed her every day to keep it under control.

We have a boy ragdoll & he is just about to turn 1. My chidren are 4.5 & 2.5 & they absolutely ADORE Pokey! They won't leave the house without kissing him goodbye & they are always wanting to come home & see him & they FIGHT over who's turn it is to feed him!
I am not an overly cat person, but I will honestly say that Pokey has stolen my heart! He is a fantastic cat who is playful but lazy as well. My youngest had a habit of giving him a 'whole body hug' where she actually lays on him (he is HUGE!!!!!! So don't worry, it doesn't hurt him) & he will even come & lay at her feet now when he wants her to lay on him for a hug!
They DO play though, so don't think it's just going to lie on the lounge the whole day, because they are active as well. My kids have those dangly like toys that they jiggle for him & when they are playing chasey he even hides & jumps out around corners to 'get' them. It's hilarious.
The hair is an issue, but not a huge one. I vacuum every second day anyway, so I'm not really cleaning any more than I usually would, but I did buy a new dustbuster because he has a favourite spot on the stairs & also the lounge that I just tidy up as it needs doing. I also get my kids to brush him while they are patting him, so I guess that must help keeping the hair at bay.

Thanks Jayne, I vac every second day too and will continue to do so especially when Georgia starts to crawl. We have vinyl planks on our floor so the hair will show up heaps but it is easy to maintain.
We have two Raggies, brother from the same litter.
They are almost 2 years old now, and I cannot rave about their gentle nature enough.
They are great with our friends who have kids, they treat them like dolls and babies, wrapping them in blankets and rubbing them down with brushes and so forth. The boys just lay there and tolerate it all, never once have they tried to scratch ot attack anyone. They are just gentle giants. And I do mean giants, they can grow quite large. Caesar, our biggest weighs in at almost 7 kilos.

Anyone looking for a cat to grow with a child should consider a Ragdoll.

I wouldnt get one purely for the hair factor.
My sisters flatmate had one and it was atrocious!! There was hair EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME - no matter how much you vacuumed or cleaned the cat would run through the house and the place would be covered again.
She was a lovely cat though, excellent with Charlotte when she was there (at about 9-13 months)
Just a PITA to keep cleaning the house...and your clothes...and bubbas clothes...and the couch...and the bottom of the curtains...

The little Leopard is a Bengal - she's a hybrid cat from a breeder in QLD.
She's our little princess and even though she's still young she give her big raggie brothers
a run for their money...LoL

Those Ragdolls are enormous...*sigh, I want a couple now...but I've sworn off pets for awhile longer and my big boofy p00fy boycat Ishka would NEVER forgive me.
Thanks for that reply, I dont really know what to do because the last thing I want is hair everywhere and i really hate kitty litter inside and I know they are an indoor breed.
The kitty litter is a big thing for indoor cats. I have found a brand that is the best I've ever used, it's called Oz Pet and i'ts easy to work, it uses two trays, a sieve type one inside another. It doesn't cause much odour from the cats at all and is quite easy to clean, it's very economical and it lasts AGES. But it's not sold everywhere, I have to drive an hour to another town to get my supplies lol.
We have a cat run built onto the side of our house, It's fully enclosed but our cats love it, and they often do their "business" outside in the run, which makes hassles less. We just lock them in of a night. They have their own bedroom, as my husband has allergies so sleeping with us is a no no. They are fine to have their own room, and they know they don't have a choice so most nights there is no protest...but like children sometimes we have the tantrums where they run and hide from you at bedtime....All part of being a cat owner LoL. I wouldn't swap them for anything in the world.
For the hair, there are a lot of products out there to help. Shed X is a great product that you give them orally, it helps lessen the hair loss. I would highly recommend you invest in a "zoom groom" its a rubber type brush/comb and it is GREAT to getting out loose hair, but best to brush them in an open space cause it can get a big messy, if you do this once a week the hair issue isn't reallllllly that much of a problem. Of course we have a Dyson vaccum with a power head lol, best investment I made when it comes to our cats. Some raggies will even tolerate you vacumming them, if you start young. We tried once with Caesar and it didn't go down to well, so we haven't tried again lol
