Toys in cot

when is it safe for Bubs to start sleeping with something in their cots?
Miss B has a toy that she has had since she was born - its one of those silk on one side and nice soft clothy stuff on the other side with a bunny rabbit head - its kinda like a lil blanket come cuddle toy thing (hope u know what im talking about) and she likes to go to bed with it, but im soooo paranoid about letting her sleep with anything in her cot that i take it off her once she has fallen asleep!
When is it safe for them to start having things like cuddle toys and pillows (not getting one) etc in their cot while they are sleeping?
Miss B is almost 8mths old!

Jack started sleeping with his taggy blanket (30cm x 30cm) when he was 6 months old. He now has a small Iggle Piggle teddy, a small fabric doll and his taggy blanket in his cot with him. He loves to hold his doll while he goes to sleep and play with Iggle Piggle when he wakes up.

umm I always left the toys in the cot. He's always had a mobile and one of those play mirrors next to his head. There are a million soft toys on the drawers next to his cot and he always stands up when he is awake and pulls them in the cot...

Peter has a very similar blankie thing, and I was always very paranoid about him having it in his cot. But he's had it in there since at least 8 months, probably a bit younger. One thing we used to do with him a lot was play a game with him during the day where we would put a bunny rug or something over his face and then pull it off (like peek-a-boo), and he learned to pull it off himself, which gave me reassurance that he could get his blankie off his face if needed.

Having said that, many times when I go into his room, he has his blankie over his head. Freaks me right out, but he seems to be able to breathe through it fine.

Yeah Miss B is the same - she can pull things off her face, however would prefer to keep it on!
i guess if all of u have had toys in the cots and ur Bubs have been fine - than i guess i better stop being paranoid and just get over my fear of something happening and just leave her Pinky in the bed with her!!!
Will give it ago tonight - doubt i will sleep much tho!

LOL Jazz has always had her teddy in the cot, when she was little little it was right at the other end of the cot. Now it sleeps with me otherwise I get hit in the head with it at midnight PMSL! She used to have other toys in there too, but she throws everything out of her cot and onto me now so its the bare minimum!

Hahahaha, it was cute... the first few times!!!

DD has had a similar comforter in her cot since about 3.5 months. She uses it to go to sleep and resettles herself during naps/nighttime sleeps by sucking on it. Honestly I wouldn't take it away from her now because she is very attached to it. I introduced it because she kept sucking on her blanket and I was stressed about the summer time...what would I do if it was really hot and she still wanted her blanket??

She sleeps in our room, so I always move it away from her face and towards her hands when she is asleep...

anna - u have just made me think that this could be the solution to our dummy problem! We are woken several times during the night to pop the dummy back in, she only has it for bed time! and its driving us nuts! maybe if we let her sleep with her Pinky she would settle for sucking on that instead and than we wont have to get up soo often!!! Charlotte has always had things in her cot (was in her cot about form about 6 months full time) she wil often want 4 or 5 teddies in her cot, and not all off them are small! lol

So long as there are no bots she can chew or suck that will pose a choking hazard, I would say go for it

I think I gave ds Iggle Piggle to take to bed with him at about 9 months old... by 8 or 9 months, they'd have to work pretty hard to suffocate themselves I think...

Hj, with the dummy, have you tired giving her two or three to take to bed? That works wonders here- if ds loses one, he can pop another in :)

DS has slept with his taggy blanket since he was about 6 months - ususally over his face which panicked me to begin with but he seems to love it. Now he has slowly built up a HUGE collection of toys in the cot that he must sleep with - although I have drawn the line with his wanting to sleep with his trucks.. Wouldn't be the most comfortable thing to roll onto :rolleyes:. He also has 4 dummies in his cot and we pretty much never have to get up to help him find one. I put one right beside his head once he is asleep and that's normally the one he wakes up with.

LoriRae - nope havent tried that trick with the dummy! so do u just scatter them around the cot???

mrscricket - if ur DS can sleep with his taggy blanket over his face and be okay than im sure Miss B can also - its very reassuring to hear about other bubs doing this and sleeping with toys and being okay! thankyou - as for the dummies do u just scatter the rest around also?

I've never put any toys in with DD, not for any safety reason - more so because I don't want her to have a strong attachment to a certain toy, and if something happens and the toy gets lost - or she goes to sleep at her grandmas and its not there - she wont freak out!! IYKWIM ;)

It's funny you write that leesa, I've been wondering too... a book I'm reading suggests encouraging an attachment so they have that comfort for when you're not there, so I've been wondering if thats a good idea or not :dunno: :think:

DD1 has a pink bear that she loves - we have a "back up" pink bear (an identical one) just in case pink bear gets lost. We also had 2 of those blanket things with teddy heads when she was little too - one for home and one for daycare.

Hj - we have the other couple just above his head. He is old enough to know they are there and can reach behind himself to get them if needed. When he was younger, I always kept one tucked in the side so that I could find it in the middle of the night. Nothing worse than doing the frantic dummy search in the dark!

Leesa - we were worried about DS forming a strong attachment - which he has - but it's not a bad thing for him. We go away alot (with him) and he also spends one day a week with my sister. He will sleep anywhere as long as he has his blanket. The few times he has been to daycare, he has even slept there with his blankie. For this reason, we have more than one so we can rotate to wash and we always keep one in his backpack. We do try to limit the blanket for bed only as I don't like seeing him walk around with it during the day. Mum tells me I slept with my blanket until I was 8 :rolleyes:.

We've just put about 5 teddy bears of various sizes in DD's cot last night and she's almost 16 months old. When I went in to get her up this morning she'd lined them all up and was "talking" to them and giving them all big cuddles...also, she didn't wake me up at all in the middle of the night, I don't know if she slept through or woke up and just played for a while and went back to sleep, but we didn't hear anything.

Are you rotating the two pink bears every week or so? If the first one gets lost once it is older and worn in your DD WILL know the difference between that and the new one, LOL.
My little niece has the ugliest, grottiest, torn old rabbit teddy (She's two years old) and her mum has absolutely NO HOPE of replacing it with new (but exactly the same) one that she bought, LOL, she gets so embarrased when her DD wants to take it out in public.:doh:

Leesa - i too have heard that its good for them to have some sort of comfort toy, but we also didnt want to get into that, like we didnt want to start the dummy! but i guess its a case of what ever ur comfy with and whatever makes ur bub happy! im more worried about getting rid of the dummy than i am her Pinky!

Marlene - thats a good idea about rotating the 2 teddies - wish we had 2 identical Pinky's! hehehe but so far she is full on attached to it yet anyway - she just likes it at this stage, and we bring it along everywhere but she isnt at the stage where she "needs" it

mrscricket - oh dont remind me about the frantic dummy search in the middle of the night hahaha - i had one the other night - usually i walk to her bedroom with my eyes shut, find the dummy pop it in and back to bed and asleep - but the other night i couldnt find the dummy so i was searching everywhere - in the end i had to get a new one and bang i was wide awake!!!

danniellabella - i thought about putting some teddy's in Miss B cot when she gets a bit older, for her to occupy herself with when she wakes up - but DH has said no - he dosent want her to mix going to bed to sleep with going to bed with playing! i kinda see his point, but i think the older they get the easier it is too explain that cot is bed time and u can play quietly when u wake up IYKWIM? do u have any probs with ur little initially going to sleep?



Anyways - last night - we had 5 get ups! the first 2 DH did and they were pop the dummy in, the next 3 i did and the dummy was in she was just crawling around in her cot! except for the last one which i think was a nightmare! (which is another Post i have done)
We even left Pinky in her cot with her! but she didnt find Pinky when she kept waking up, so we had to give it too her to show her Pinky was there - i guess this is going to be a working progress! hahahaha

HJ - It sounds like B has the exact same "pinky" as Lara has. I have let her sleep with hers for a few months now. She isn't fully attached to it but I am hoping she will use it as her comforter once I take her dummy off her.

Leigh - yeah we are hoping for that also! hahaha


still having 4-5 get ups of a night time! having Pinky in her cot hasnt worked :(
