Wow... I dunno... Probably not... I grew up with only my granddad as extended family, I never saw my aunts/uncles/counsins or even other grandparents and I want my kids to always know their uncles/aunts/cousins etc.
But if I had family there then yeah I'd consider it. But Not having family there I wouldn't be able to do it.

Whats the go Mel? You taking off on us? I'd never move to NZ, unemployment is a huge issue over there, and the minimum wage is realllllllly low.

Pretty sure we toyed with the idea 10+ years ago, but we were looking at a lot of different scenarios back then.
Yeah, if there were jobs and available accommodation waiting for us. It looks really beautiful in places over there, and friendly.
Um.. :protest: sorry mel but this question is redundant because I AM moving to the sunshine coast therefore you are NOT ALLOWED to move to NZ .. no way.. putting my foot down :thumbsup:

My sister & her family did - they were supposed to be there for 5 - 7 years, and have just moved back after about 3 years partially 'cause the kids were bullied for being Aussies - but that may have just been Christchurch.

but yeah I would pack up & move & have done so twice now. Grew up in a small (& I mean small) country town in SA, lived there all my life til going to Adelaide for work, but back every other weekend. Then after DH & I got hitched it was time for a change & some better $$$$$, we lived in a very remote part of WA & now a semi remote part of QLD............I would love to go to Tassie Yes....but our next goal is CANADA. Company DH works for is based there......here we come!!!!

yes I would seriously consider selling up everything and moving away - lets just say I've not discounted it lately, have even sat down and worked out what I would need to sell etc and what I would do with the things I would want to keep. I basically have no family here, just my friends (who are amazing and wonderful & I couldn't survive without) and they would be more than welcome to come visit me anywhere I ended up.
Nope! I've already done that and come back to Australia after 2 years...it just didn't work out.
Of course, I was only 2 years old at the time. :p
you know I wanted to do this but realised I am lonley enough as it is how much more lonley will i be going to a new town or city.
We will hopefully live in the uk or ireland for a year when the kids are bigger but not permantly.

Dh and I have done three big moves (within QLD but about 1000km each time) I love it. I love moving to a new town and exploring a new region esp if it is somewhere remote/has tourist attractions etc.
We have been lucky though as DH job pays entirely for every move including paying stamp duty and other costs involved in us selling our houses. Not sure if we would do it if we had to cover expenses ourselves
Mel - you know how i feel on moving at the drop of a hat (4 houses in 2 different states in 2 year lol!!!)...
but i dont think i could sell everything and start afresh. I think i love my furniture pmsl!
but if it was for an amazing opportunity (ie work with heaps of $$)... then sure!. but if it was so i could live there and it would cost me over $10-15 k to move and re buy everything probably not.
Even to tassy i would consider shipping it there in a container. :)

Yep, the more distance between me and the IL's the better.
We often daydream about moving to Tassie. With my current shyte fight situation on the go, you just may see my location change all of a sudden.
Tassie is nice - but very cold atm. Summer isnt too bad.
I can understand why you would want to live near your Dad.
We have never had an interest in going to NZ so we wouldnt move there but i have heard its nice.
Not while the kids are so young. Just before DS was born we were looking at the possiblity of moving to Canada for DH's work. After he was born I realised how glad I was we hadn't moved because I needed a support system....I agree with Brontide 100% on the inlaws thing but unfortunately, most of the time the only person I have to help out with the kids is MIL.
We do eventually want to move up the coast, but nothing as drastic as o/s.

Funnily enough, we lived on the Sunshine Coast for 6 years and moved back here when we started having kids to be with family. We miss the Coast terribly. Love the climate and the lifestyle. Thinking about heading back there in a few years.

Yes, I would consider it. I like change.
Mind you, it seems to have become a full-time hobby of mine to think about moving and unfortunately DP is not much help as he really doesn't mind where he lives.
We've both done big moves before (me to Aus from the UK) and he to the US (before we met) and back again so the big move doesn't really faze us too much.
Yeah, for sure - When DH was looking for a postdoc position, we considered everything: Boston, Cambridge, Bangalore, Lille, Auckland....
And we ended up in Brisbane. :p
Depending how things go, we might well be on the move again in a couple of years. We'll never end up in Tassie, unless it's as cliched retirees running a B & B, but I am OK with that. :D Some friends of mine have just done it, two months out from birth of first child, packed up to go to Tassie, because it's cheaper there and she'll be able to stay home for longer. And the community is very strong down there. I guess it has to be, when you're all cousins... :lol:

A friend of mine has a house in Hobart, and he seriously wanted to rent out the house and just live in his shed. Not do it up into a granny flat, just keep it as a shed. His girlfriend was not so keen, though.:
We've toyed with the idea of going to Canada, or even the US. And its still on the cards. We wouldn't sell everything though. We'd probably sell some stuff and keep the rest in storage. It is something we definitely want to do before the kids finish school, just for one year to give them some worldly experience.
Oh yeah Tasmania, I seriously looked into moving there, but I couldn't see many jobs in dh's line and when faced with reality, couldn't even afford the trip over for a holiday. :p
I've heard that Tassie's can have a thing against mainlanders, but fair's fair, we do give our share of crap to them! And perhaps I've only heard from people with bad experiences, all the Tassies I know are lovely - may be different to actually live there, but it may not!

Tassie is beautiful!! It's gotta be one of the only places you can walk outside and see the snow, then walk 5 minutes down the road to the beach then decide that bushwalking is what you wanna do and go from the beach. It's seriously gorgeous here. I remember the drive from the boat in absolute awe at the mountains and the green! I was from cement city so it was very new to me, so hilly and perfect.
Mel YOU find DH a job, and I'll tell you that you can get a house here where I am, 30 minute drive from Launceston city for $200 a week near the beach :D

Its funny - I went searching on seek for any jobs - and there was a job vacancy for a senior architectural draftsman - not in hobart (yay!) and it was advertised by a new zealand company!!
And I'm like - its a sign!!! I was thinking NZ - but really wanna go to tassie - lol.. and craig's like.. "Mel.. we're not people that believe in signs" :rolleyes:
