Parents of bubs that suffered Broncholitis

I have a question for those parents whose Bubs suffered broncholitis. I had mentioned this to the hospital as it seemed to much of a coincidence and thought I would get it out there to you, to see if you noticed the same thing.

Well two months ago V had suffered a dose of broncholitis just a few days after getting her first tooth, although she was monitored for a couple of hours in emergency she was not severe enough to warrant a stay in hospital and was sent home.

Now just recently again the same thing happened, V had 3 teeth come thru and a few days later was admitted to hospital and placed in intensive care and has only just come out of hospital 2weeks later. She also came home with another couple of teeth that have just come thru while in hospital.

Now my question is. Did you notice your bub come down with brocholitis while teething?

I was talking with my mum last night and when both my sisters were babies when teething they kept coming down with broncholitis, which is why I thought I would bring up this question with you today.

It just seems to me as to much of a coincidence, yet as I said the hospital doesnt think it has anything to do with it. They had also noticed that she was teething while in hospital.

Your replies would be greatly appreciated as I am considering mentioning this to V's peadiatrician next week, especially if some of you found the same.

My DS recently ha bronchiolitis and his teeth came through around the same time, though I could definitively say they coincided....but I do think that a child's immunity is down a bit more when they teethe. That's just my opinion, but it seems to me that whenever one of my kids get/got a tooth they get sick too.

All of my other children only had a nappy rash and sniffles when teething, nothing real dramatic, and of course their immune system is down when teething. The thing is none of my kids have never had difficulty with cutting teeth they all even V handle it really well. Which surprises me with the after effects of V's teeth once they are already thru. Especially the severity of the last lot.

YAY......thanks for starting this thread.....YES, YES, & YES!!!!!! from about 8months onwards was a nightmare for us. DS last year was in hosp 5times incl one RFD flight to Brissy. All with suspected RSV, asthma etc. From the very start I told the doc I think it was because of his teeth, as he would get an ear infection also. It was a horrible year & I noticed teeth each & every time. Now at age 2.3months he has all his teeth & not even a sniffle & its July!!!! Everyone often ask how he is & when we say GREAT, not a runny nose, cough etc since Jan they can't believe....how can a child be so sick & then nothing!!!! the all said he was asthmatic & even tested for CF!!!!!

I now have a friend going through the same thing with her 10month old, in hosp yet again the other night & I had to ask have you noticed teeth & she too said yes.

I'm trying to remember but I dont think she did have any coming through, that would have been an absolute nightmare, bronchiolitis & teething together ahhhh! It does seem like maybe they could be linked doesnt it?

DD was admitted to hospital, and eventually diagnosed with RSV - which led to Bronchiolitis. She didn't appear to be teething at the time though.

Sam has shown teething symptoms on and off since he was four and a half months old. He had bronchiolitis when he was five months old... At six and a half months old we're still getting shocking teething symptoms, but no teeth yet and no recurrence of the bronchiolitis.

It probably comes down to the immune hit they take when teething... some of us just have sucky immune systems and seem to get everything going, if you have a baby like that, then it wouldn't really be a surprise that they can get bronchiolitis each time they have teeth coming through.

It might be worth looking at ways to boost her immune system for future teething episodes.

DD's bronciolitis doesen't seem to be triggered by teeth but rather by cold air.
She does get a really runny nose and rash around her mouth from dribble when she's teething though.

DD had Brochiolitis 3 weeks ago, was borderline hospital admission, a few days later 2 top centre teeth came through. I would tend to think that it is also a low immunity thing, and DD has mild lung disease from being Prem and not recieveing the steroids and is more prone to "colds" or similar turning into more severe respiratory infections.

We have had two bouts of Croup, the first requiring a hospital visit and monitoring, second bout I got the steroids into her a couple of hours quicker and it didn't get as advanced (called the locum out), we now have a stash in the fridge for next time we get a sign that it is coming again.

She has just come down with another cold, wheezing, snotty nose, cough, so hoping that is doesn't develop into something more. We are hoping to keep her last lot of weight gain on this time - we lost 6 weeks worth of gains in 3 days with Brochiolitis!!

I think the symptoms are quite similar (temp, grizzly, loss of appetite, a bit lethargic etc), but the most distinctive feature was the wheeziness while breathing...and in DD's case - some shallow, rapid breathing.

Lachlan has had a dose of Bronchilitis which happened at the same time he got his back molars coming through.
Emma used to get broncilitis every time she cut teeth and according to my mum i was hospitilised several times due to bronchitilis while teething.

She recently told me after Lachlan had it that i would get it with every tooth i got.
So i would def say that there seems to be some link there.

Charlie was eventually diagnosed with asthma so his bronchialitis, while originally believed to be illness-related, is now known to be brought on by a variety of things.

It's very possible that teething is linked, though, as I imagine that their immunity levels are compromised at the time that they're teething, which then means they're more susceptible to any virus going, which then can lead to bronchialitis in children who are more prone to it, IYKWIM.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I should also mention that I was told there are two types of broncholitis one bacterial and the other viral. V had viral, not bacterial. Do any of you know what your bubs had?

Tan / Erin - Not sure about you both, but I am dreading the next teething episode JIC it did trigger the broncholitis.

Charlie reacts to viral infections (among other things). He responds to Ventolin and Predisolone and was diagnosed a asthmatic at 14 months of age (which they generally don't like doing before 2 years of age). We now have an asthma action plan for when he shows signs of getting an attack and it's kept him out of hospital now for over a year. :)

Not dreading it here, as DS now has all his teeth. My DS was also diagnosed with asthma, put on a preventer & given an action plan (as DH too has asthma)....but nothing ever worked & it was a horrible 12months!!! I don't believe they were right in this as he hasn't had a single wheeze or cough etc like I said since Jan this year.........terrible one minute, gone the next. We always said we wonder what would happen when he got all his teeth & there you have it....so yes teeth related here for sure!

Is it viral where antibiotics aren't required? DD doesn't get antibiotics but she's on ventolin which she only has when she has a cough or wheeze

That is right, antibiotics don't work with viral infections, in severe cases the sufferer will require hospitalisation, oxygen, and other forms of respiratory assistance, like CSAB's V did, needed to be on a variety of ventilators to assist with breathing, NGT (feeding tube), IV for hydration and probably other treatments.

Just wondering what you use - if anything to help with your childs teething as maybe this has something to do with it. There was a post a few weeks ago about a similar thing here where I mentioned my DD broncholitis was aggrevated by salicylates - a naturally occuring chemical in foods - mainly skins of fruit and vegetables but can also be found in teething gels and some pain relieving medications? Maybe something to look at - not sure if it's applicable to your situation though

If you can believe when V was admitted and was having trouble breathing they tried ventolin and it appeared to work for a little while but in the end did nothing for her. I had also been told there isnt much they can do to help her in way of antibiotics we just realy had to ride it out and hope for the best. hugs

Ventolin very rarely works on very young children (less than 2 years of age) because their respiratory systems just aren't developed enough to allow it to work. Charlie was an exception in that ventolin worked for him from the age of 8 months, and for that little miracle I am eternally grateful.

So csab, I would say that even if V doesn't respond to ventolin now, don't be scared of allowing them to try it if she ever gets another attack. If she responded, even a little, her response may well improve the older she gets.
