I am the same! haha.
but i need reasons to convince DH.
He likes convience - ie walk to the shops, etc
but where i am looking you cant walk to the shops you would have the drive everywhere..
but the thought of no neighbours is bliss lol!
He thinks unless it is paddock (ie usable land - not forest) then you may as well be ona suburban block...
Personal Opinion: Much as I'm craving living in the country - I'd go city, if you want any quality of life on the weekend then the city is the go. You don't want to spend the whole weekend having to maintain the yard etc. I know moving from inner-city to a house on 1/4 acre didn't help my marriage (yes there were a whole other lot of issues impacting on us) but the time it took us on the weekends to maintain the yard & the house (upstairs and downstairs) cut into our "us" time, we stopped having time to do the things we loved.
we're on 2.5acres, 30 minutes from bris city, and we absolutely love it. sure it's more maintenance on a bigger block, but the serenity is beautiful.

Depends what you want from the land really. To own the land is a lot of responsibility, but if you're able to have chooks, veggies etc and move more towards self-sustainability, that'd be great! but that's a huge committment (as Punks said).
If you're wanting to hang with friends and do the cafe scene, then city.
But remember, if you move to the bush, and there is bush, you need to consider contingency planning for bushfire, flood etc (not that you don't do that in the city, but there's more support in the city). Is mains power and mains water available, or would it be gensets & tank water with a septic? Personally I wouldn't mind the latter, but other people would.
Also is there telephone service, both mobile and landline? Is it an STD call to your families? Is broadband (or dialup!) available?
Just some stuff to consider :)
Living in the bush has been great for our relationship. We do stuff together in the yard. We actually know our neighbours. Too often in the city, you live really close but never get to know your neighbours. We take the dogs for beautiful walks and smell fresh air. We have met people in the community through CFA. (There are other opportunities if CFA is not what you want). Space for the kids to run around.
You realise that you can live without shops, and it sounds like they will only be 20 mins drive away anyway. I grew up a city chic but love it here and can't see me moving back for awhile.
We live 15 minutes from the city on a 1/2 acre block (about to get more). Yes it is a bit more work than a suburban block, but that is part of the appeal of being out here. Would much rather work on the veggie patch than an ornamental rose garden. It is fabulous walking out the back door and not seeing neighbours, other than cows. We were getting to the point in the suburbs that we hated going outside due to the neighbours. It is so peaceful, even with the frogs getting very noisy at night.
There are downsides, as already listed. I have to drive everywhere, there is not grabbing the kids and the pram to just go for a walk to the local park. We have an awful satellite net connection, which is expensive compared to ADSL. Having friends over seems to take more effort and forward planning. No drop ins as someone is just around the corner.
Do your own list of pro's and con's. See what side has the most on it, or the most significant factors listed. That may help you decide.
I'd be leaning towards bush, as your family grows, the space will be great.
- But as Punks says, you'd need to consider the upkeep of a place and how time consuming that will be.
- Also - what's your lifestyle like now? I know for us, we're usually homebodies, we go out fairly regularly so we'd try find similar venues to the ones we use now, somewhere to have a coffee, somewhere to shop, somewhere with a church and playgroup and school. So we could move pretty much anywhere, but you need to consider what you couldn't do without.
- And if you have friends/family/good babysitters now, can you find similar where you move to?
- Will you be able to make new friends? Make sure you really check out the local facilities.
living in the sticks, i thought would be horrible. i didn't live in a big town, but was a townie through and through. out here, we get no mail delivery, and only have a corner store and the pub. i figured i'd just go to town all the time (about 15mins away) - this past week, i haven't bothered. just didn't need to! you learn to not need to go out - you shop more efficiently and we've done what others have suggested and put in vegie patch etc. (we still have an ornamental rose garden though!)
i don't miss being in the town i used to live in - yes, i'm still in town out here, but town isn't big, and i can go all week without seeing anyone unless i go out of my way to meet up with them - works for me wonderfully!
Bush! Its close enough to the city from the sounds of things to keep up with cafe lunches etc.
I think about the kids getting older...I personally would love the room for the kids to have a motorbike if they like. That sort of thing...

BTW - I'm pretty sure you'll have mobile service, & broadband if you are only 20 minutes out. If I know the area right :)

we live on an acre and love absolutely love it!
most people around here who don't like too much maintenance just keep a goat or 2 in the garden. there's always free goats, they get passed around.
we have a park/oval/post office/milk bar within walking distance and everything else is a short drive.
we absolutely love it, i could never live in the city ever again.

Alot less stressfull and u dont have to be stuck in peak hour traffic every day
Lots of room for the kids to play
Lots of room to exend the house if need be.
Being able to watch a beautiful sunrise and sunset without being blocked from polution and houses
woooohooo to the cows.. its all i can see when i look out my back door.. oh and 2 bulls, they get a little noisy, but no frogs here.:

I would go bush. But in saying that there would have be shops within driving distance 30 minutes or so. Not massive shopping centre but a couple of shops I can browse :)
I would go bush simply for the space and better lifestyle you could provide for your family. You could do so much like raise chooks, vegie garden, orchard etc. Less noise, pollution and a cleaner lifestyle all round.

We have only just moved here and so really know no one anyhow - met some lovely mums but 20 mins isnt far to drive to see people, and as to making new friends! no problem i am doing that at the moment.
It isnt too far in the sticks lol! (BJ we are looking about 20mins south of CH - you will know where). so it isnt far from towns north or south really.
As for lifestyle - i had to laugh about getting at the shops often (the thought of dragging 2 under 2 to the shops makes me cringe lol!) and cafe scene... i wouldnt know what a expresso tastes like anymore lol... so for at least the next 5 years (till kids are at school) cant see me going out too much.
We are home bodies too - love to relax and go for walks etc.
DH would love to get motorbikes and i would love to grow my own veges and get chooks (the kids would love it!).
It the scope of things i dont think 20 mins is far to drive to work at all. even if you lived in the city by the time you were stop start and driving side streets it would take close to that any how.

Very true, when we moved out here a lot of people were horrified, but we are only 15 minutes door to door to a shopping centre. Yes there is distance, but we get to drive it at 100kph most of the way which is more fuel efficient than driving at 60kph. When we lived in Melbourne most drives were for more than 15 minutes and it would take me about 45 min on public transport to get to work.:
Like you we are newish to the area so still involved in making friends. Have not left those behind, but we are also getting to know people out this way. DH has just joint the CFA, so that seems to have warmed the locals up to us, plus my killer pav at the Aussie day bbq ;)
Absolutely, better on petrol and your car long term. It may have higher kms, but i would prefer to buy a 'country' car than a city car that has only driven stop-start kms. Also gives you a bit of breathing time after work instead of stressing through the traffic.:

even tho we are out in the "sticks" as ppl call it, im only 10 mins from a town and 40 mins from shepparton. So im still easily able to get places. I just go into town, park the car and walk around the streets. Mia and I grab some lunch, sit in the park. Its great! not people everywhere.
I love the idea of not having the takeaway shops easy to access. We have been eating so much better and i have really gotten into baking. ahhh its a great life!
lol.. my FIL comes mows my lawn with the ride on. Worried about getting goat or sheep, and the thought of them eating my flowers and vegies, when i put them in. Do sheep eat them too?
Goats eat just about anything, so very good with a weedy spot. One of ours tried to eat my wool jumper whilst I was wearing it :rolleyes: So they do need to be properly fenced in, they can get over lower fences and push their way through. Sheep are easier to keep contained and fussier with food, they love grass and will eat it right down till they end up eating dirt and then make themselves sick (well this is what we were told by others who have them)
Hhmm, yeah - I remember my brother telling me that if I got a sheep it would certainly poo on my verandah. Don't ask me why or if it's really true!
