DD has a temp :(
She never has before. She hasn't slept since 1pm and has been crabby and I couldn't get her to sleep. Then I noticed she felt hot. Don't have a proper childrens thermometer but just a normal one and took her temp under her arm which was 38.1. Is this high?? What do I do??
We gave her some panadol. I can hear her laughing with DH at the moment.
Is she sick?? What do I do?? :(
-
Just watch her for now & try to keep it down. If its still there tomorrow, or she seems in pain maybe get her checked over. She might have an ear infection or sore throat & they are hard for you to see :)

Aw hun, its so worrying when they have a fever, esp when its their first one.
When DS had a fever, I called the nurses on call line and they told me the following:
- Underarm temperature is the same as mouth temperature (there was previously a whole thing about adding on half a degree to underarm temperature to get the true internal temp, but that's not "done" anymore!)
- A temperature in the 38-39 degree range is considered a 'beneficial fever' which is doing its job of killing the bug thats causing it. at 39.5 you should give panadol. (at 40.5 see a dr, at 41.5 be concerned).
I will give panadol to help DS rest and sleep, which I would think helps get rid of bugs just as much. But when he's awake I just try to do tepid washclothes and cool drinks etc to distract him if the fever isn't too high. But its super hard, I know- when they feel sick all you want to do is give them something to feel better!
Hope your little chicky feels better soon!
-
 Hope she gets better! She isnt teething is she?????
If your still worried ring that health line they could help out! xxxx
-
Thanks so much guys, that is really helpful, I feel better.
Oh, maybe won't give any more panadol then!! Let her fight it off!!
She might be teething, not sure...
-
I wouldn't worry yet, see how it goes.
Emily had temp for 2 days a few weeks ago but as she didn't seem that upset and panadol always brought it down easily I didn't worry too soon. Turned out to be a virus.
If you do feel concerned go see your GP tomor if it is still up just to put your mind as ease.
Just offer regualr breastfeeds to keep her hydrated.
-
DD has been hot on and off the last few days too and I was worried :( but it's just part of teething.... her teeth just don't want to come through :( .... she's still waiting for her 1st pair poor bub!!
If she's laughing I wouldn't be too worried just yet  hehe
-
Well we co-slept last night so I could keep an eye on her and she could feed whenever she wanted. Haven't given any more panadol and this morning her temp is 37.7 She's a bit sooky but that's about it. She is soooooo cute and cuddly to sleep with, lol.

If she seems well in all other aspects then she will probably just get better on her own. Miss J had a temp for a few days a couple of weeks back and it cleared up no problems. If she does get worse then take her to the Dr.
I hope she continues to improve - it's awful when they are sick and can't tell you what's wrong

:( she's not well. I think she has diarrhoea and she's tired, just resting with her head on my shoulder now. Hopefully she'll sleep it off. Got a dr appt this afternoon anyway.
-
poor little mite. Let me know how she goes darl.....
I hope she gets better soon and its just a passing virus.
DONT GOOGLE!
-
Oh i've only jsut seen this. It sounds like she might be gettign a bug. I hope she will be okay. Its so awful them being sick. You feel so helpless for them  for you and  for DD.
-
if shes like that then id definatly get her checked, poor poppet :(
-
id just keep fluid up to her, strip her off so just nappy and singlet if its a bit cool.
keep her comfy, she may be a bit whingy. but if it hits 39 give her panadol and then recheck temp every 15 min for an hour.
also feel for her pulse on her chest if it feels abnomrally high ( remember babies HR is high anyway ) then get her to the doc asap.
she may just been having a grizzly few days for no apparent reason, DD did this a few times.
it could be teeth begining they can knock little ones around.
if she is still reactive to you and normal for herself just clingy and sooky keep her close by and a close eye on her.
fluids are important especially if she has a bit of runny poo

I checked again and it was 38.75 so it seemed to be going up so I gave her some panadol and it's down to 36.5 now. Cold water, stripping her of etc wasn't bringing it down. She's just cuddling up to me and going to sleep now. Hopefully just a bug that she'll fight off but going to the Dr at 4.30 just to get her checked.
Thanks for posting everyone, I can't stand seeing her sick and you help keep me calm!

this is from a fact sheet from the royal childrens hospital, hope it helps
Fever in children
•Fever is when the temperature of the body rises to above 38?C. A normal temperature range for a child is usually up to 38?C.
•Fever is a sign of infection in the body. Fever is often caused by a virus and sometimes by bacteria. Viral infections are far more common and do not need antibiotics. Antibiotics do not cure viruses. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics.
•A high fever does not necessarily mean your child has a serious illness. Fever itself is not harmful until it reaches 42.0?.
•There is no advantage to lowering your child's fever except for comfort.
•Treat your child by making them more comfortable; give clear fluids (eg. water, diluted fruit juice) and paracetamol if the fever is making your child miserable.
•Fever is a way the body fights infection, and your child's temperature will return to normal when the infection has completely gone.
See your doctor if your child has the following symptoms with their fever.
•Complaining of a stiff neck or light hurting their eyes.
•Vomiting and refusing to drink much.
•Rash.
•More sleepy than usual.
•Problems with breathing.
•If your child is in pain.
Also see your doctor if:
•Your child is under three months and has a fever.
•Your child's fever is above 40?C.
Treat your child at home by making them more comfortable.
•Dress your child in enough clothing so that they are not shivering.
•Tepid sponging (sponging with slightly warm water) and fanning children with fevers is not recommended.
•Give your child frequent small drinks of clear fluid (eg. water, diluted fruit juice or cordial). If your child is less than six months old give extra cooled boiled water, breast feeds, or bottles.
•Do not worry if your child refuses to eat at this time.
•Watch your child for signs that their illness is getting worse.
About paracetamol
•Paracetamol is also known as Panadol, Tempra, Dymadon and Tylenol.
•If your child seems well and is happy, there is no need to treat a fever with paracetamol.
•If the fever is above 38.5?C and your child is miserable or has other symptoms such as a sore throat, they may be given paracetamol. Follow the correct dose on the medicine instructions.
•Panadol may not make the fever go away but the aid is to make the child feel better.
•Paracetamol is a common ingredient in a number of medicines for illnesses such as colds and flu. Make sure that when giving paracetamol for fever that your child has not had one of these cold and flu medicines in the last 4 hours.
•Paracetamol can be given every four hours as directed on the bottle. No more than four doses should be given in each 24 hours. Do not give for more than 2 days without seeing your doctor

Thanks Jols!
This bit is good: Fever itself is not harmful until it reaches 42.0?.
•There is no advantage to lowering your child's fever except for comfort.
Have to remember that, it's not hurting her.
She is more sleepy than usual but isn't everyone when they're sick. She's drinking lots tho which is good.
Thanks girls! I'm giving her lots of love!
-
when sophie was sick recently i only really got worried when she got over 40, she had nurofen for comfort, i hope its just a virus and she gets better soon
-
It's awful when they are sick :(
Lots of water too aswell as boobie juice will fix it ;)
-
-
did u get her to the doc??? how did it go?
-
Well we didn't end up going to the Dr yesterday bc by then she was much better. Temp was down and she was happy and ate dinner so we thought she was over it. Then she woke up at 12 last night very hot and upset, gave her some panadol so she could get back to sleep. Temp seems to be on its way back up this morning :( so I will take her to the Dr today. She is asleep on my lap now after only being up for an hr.
-
:( It is probably just a virus that will work itself through her system of its own accord but better to be safe and get the Dr to see her. They do tend to get worse during the night and then perk up during the day for some reason. Also she will probably be bouncing around and happy as anything when you take her into the Dr!
-
LOL Nai, we just got back from the Dr, she was bouncing up and down on my knees and yelling.
Dr checked her over and her ears throat, lungs, etc are fine so he said it's a virus and to just give her panadol. Said we could bring her back tomorrow if she's still sick if we wanted her checked before the weekend. He was such a nice Dr! Couldn't get into my usual Dr but I will be going to him again! And he bulk billed me too.
HAB is back in action now, she just wants cuddles so she gets special treatment, lol
-
So the temp lasted 3 days and then she broke out in a rash all over her tummy and back and up behind her ears. Mum reckons it is German Measles :o
Was going to take her to the Dr again today but this morning we woke up and the rash was suddenly gone (lasted 3 days). She is still very cranky though, she never really cries but has been getting upset. Very clingy and sooky and tired after only being up for 1-1.5 hrs. She's usually up for 2-2.5 hrs. Nothing else is wrong though, no temp, should I take her back to the Dr??
-
Well I just decided to book in for the Dr this afternoon JIC.
-
I hope she's ok - let us know how you go at the Dr
