Is it just an old wives tale?

Not sure if this is the right place to post.

But I'm curious after talking with my dad & uncle, their mum & grandma swore by the fact that a full moon or new moon around your due date (2-3 days either way) could bring on labour/waters breaking and was wondering if there was anything to this.

So I went back and had a look at some of the birthdays on lunar calendars of some people I know who had spontaneous water breaking / labours:

*My brother was born 3 days before a full moon - mum's water broke 4 days before she was due to go in for elective c-section.
*My DH was born 3 days after new moon.
*My neice was born 2 days before full moon - 4 days before due date
*Friends baby was born 3 days before full moon - week before due date
*XDH was born 1 day before new moon

I have a full moon 4 days before my due date and my DH works away so have told him he better make sure he's home 7-10 days before due date just in case :lol:

Not too sure about this one - but I am interested to know when you bubs is born!

Hmm I dunno about that. I had a new moon on my due date with DD2 and nothing happened for nearly a fortnight, 4 days from a full moon.

But I know it is true for some people, the moon affects the tides, we are made of a lot of water, so yeah its possible ;)

I can tell you that lots of woman to have SROM when there is a full moon and labour wards get very busy!!!

Same as on medical wards and in nursing homes a lot of the oldies go off mentally and do strange things.

My mum is a midwife and for years has commented on the link of full moons and women going into labour. She's always said "it's a full moon, tonight will be busy" and she'd be right

According to her theory (and it is just her theory) she believes it has something to do with the gravitational pull at that time and it affects a woman's water.......BUT she did say that it only seems to help give those a nudge that are extremely close to going on their own.....

Actually she did say this is when Accident and Emergency gets their busiest as well.

my water broke at 35 weeks on a full moon, i think there's a connection, the maternity ward was chock a block that night, all the midwives commented that there must have been a full moon

yeah apparently its the same with a thunderstorm too!

i heard the storm one is because the atmospheric pressure drops, not entirely sure why it causes women to go into labour though

hmmm it's all very interesting, I've been googling it too and there seems to be some relation to tides, our body & amniotic fluid etc.

Suppose I'll have to wait and see ;) will update though when it all happens.

I just checked, and my DD was born one day before the full moon - with a spontaneous labour that began with my waters breaking... The birth suite was really full that night too.

Now I am hoping that this bubba #2 doesn't do the same thing, as the next full moon is Dec 31st... we're due around 11th Jan, and i really want to make it through Christmas and New Years first!!

how strange - ds was born on half moon - 2 weeks early!! and actually conceived on a half moon.
and this bub was conceived on a full moon. would be strange if it's born on a full as well! oh i just looked up and bub's due date is a full moon!

Prama - I had to go check, I O'd day of fullmoon......I remember commenting that it was early coz I get pain in my side when I do.

As we left a friends house after dinner, we were all standing outside commenting on the nice big full moon. About two hours after we got home I went into labour. Four other girls in my belly buddy group had their babies on the same day.

sorry if this is already covered haven't read all responses, but how do i find out when the full/new moon is around my due date.... i'm due 11 january 2010

Most women used to give birth on full moons and high tides.

Now most give birth on a Tuesday (Monday inducation) or Thursday (induction before the weekend). Changing times, sigh.

DS's due date was 18th April 2008
He was born 27th April 2008
Full moon was 7days before (20th)
New moon was 21days before (april 6th) and 8days after (5th may)
First quarter was 15days before and
Last quarter was the day after he was born :)

But is suppose it does work for some.

its interesting. working in retail you'd know a full moon people went a little crazy :lol:
as for my DS
EDD jan 27th (new moon Jan 26th)
DOB Feb 7th (full moon feb 10) so i dunno no real connection (other then heat makes water disappear - i guess i 47deg. day would do that too?) it'll be interesting to see what happens
could it also have something to do with a star sign? like water sign = more likely to be birthed on a full moon?? :think:

my ds was born on a full moon... i spent a few contraction breathing while gazing at the moon outside.

Elijah was born on the Wed (3 days under) straight after that massive storm we had at Easter... I remember I had a hossy app on the the Tues and driving to the app I looked at all the mess there was and the fact that we'd have had trouble getting there if I'd gone into labour cos roads were blocked and we were cut off apart from one way I think. I can't remember if the storm was 2 or 3 days before.

With Oskar it was exactly 1 week after a new moon and 1 week before full moon (smack bang in the middle - 4 days over.

Interesting thread! The full moon theory doesn't seem to apply to me though. I've gone and looked up the moon phases and have found that my DS, myself, DH and my brothers and sisters were all born within 3-4 days of a half-moon....
