I keep meaning to read it... Raising Boys is brilliant, and Steve Biddulph does a forward in Raising Girls so I expected it to be just as good :)
The book has also made me think of another thread here somewhere (I can't remember where) where we were talking about building self-esteem in our children. Some people were saying SE should come from within and therefore instead of saying to your child 'wow, I think you did really well' or something you should rephrase it to 'you must feel proud of yourself' and not saying things such as 'good girl' etc. Anyone remember that thread??
Others were confused and saying that they thought it was natural to be saying 'good girl' etc. I was one that agreed praising your children and telling them how good they are was a good thing to do but I didn't comment bc I didn't know how to say why I thought this.
Anyway, the book explains it. Girls develop who they are and their self-esteem through relationships. They develop their sense of self in the context of relationships. They need to hear that they are good and admired and beautiful and smart and everything else. It helps them to know that they are worth while, that they are enjoyed, they are important, etc, and develops their self-esteem.
So anyway, I just wanted to put the other point of view out there. Both ways are important I think. Letting them know how proud you are of them and also helping them feel a sense of achievement within themselves.
No one probably knows the thread I'm talking about now, wish I could find it, would have written this in there instead.
:DI really enjoyed Raising Girls and have a copy which I will keep on hand as a reference book as DD grows up. I thought some of it was just common sense stuff, and the rest were things that I hadn't thought about and was glad that I'd been made aware of it.
Only part that I thought was a leeetle far fetched was the relationship between girls & horses. I'm not going to be buying DD a pony, that's for sure!!! But I'm not against it entirely. If she develops an interest off her own back, then I will be happy to foster it...to a point.:lol:

There's definitely a section on girls and horses! I've lent my copy to a friend otherwise I'd quote something from there. Have you still got your copy? Have a look, I promise I'm not mad (well ok, but only a little bit!) :ROFL:
pmsl, I think you're mad! There's no section on horses in mine, just a section on 'the role of pets'. It might have been updated? I've seen other copies with a different cover. Mine is purple with a picture of a tiara on the front.

I really like it too! I borrowed it from the library but loved it so much I brought it!!! :lol:
My DH got it for Christmas from BIL & SIL. I totally forgot about it! Must steal it off him!
Heaven have you read the books "Wild at Heart" and "Captivating"? They are good raising boys/girls books too :)

I've got a copy too - it's from the OpShop so I will check to see if it has the horses section in it :lol: sounds a bit weird so it might have been removed in the updated versions....
I'm really glad I found this thread as just by conincidence i ordered a copy of 'raising boys' just this morning. really looking forward to it arriving now.
i'd love to know more about the link b/w girls and horses, as i always had horses growing up until i was about 23 yo or so, and absolutely adored them.
I really want to read this book now!! Alas my local bookstore and Kmart are sold out:wall:

I've heard both Raising Girls and Raising Boys are terrific books. I bought Raising Boys when I was pregnant and forgot about it. Thanks to this thread I will start reading it tonight :)

I have Raising Boys as I have two boys and this has reminded me to purchase the raising girls book too as I now have a little princess to add to my princes :)
I will look on the book depository website..even though it's a UK website the exchange rate is good at the moment and they post world wide free, I have used them many times before. So it usually works out cheaper in the end.

Winter, I have solved the mystery!!
Was in a bookshop the other day and saw a book called raising girls with a different cover and by a different author so I had a look to see if it had the bit about horses in it and it did!! LOL.
The one you read is by Gisela Preuschoff and the one I read is by Melissa Trevathan and Sissy Goff. No wonder we were confused, lol.
Hi heaven, perhaps the thread about self esteem you were looking for is "the search for validation"... In the emotional development section. It's one I started and people discuss good boy and good girl etc. Hth. Would add a link but I am on my iPhone ( feeding dd off to sleep).

I have this book.... Mine is "Raising Girls" by Gisela Preuschoff. Has 2 little girls faces on the cover.
I bought mine from the BB online store :D
