Bit of all three I think ;)
I think it's the semen that helps to ripen the cervix. I'm sure one of the girls in my Belly Buddies group said her OB told her that in order for sex to get labour going you need to have LOTS of it :o
All the best with that ;) Personally, I just couldn't handle sex right at the end of pregnancy and found a quick stretch and sweep around my due date worked wonders!
I think it has something to do with the sperm - it has a hormone called prostoglandins in it, and I think it helps soften the cervix - its similar to whats in the gels they can use to induce...of course, with baby brain on board, I could be completly wrong
The little swimmers help soften the cervix and orgasm can help the uterus start contracting :)
I think sex during the first stage is the best for getting things moving :)
And yeah all of the above ;)
yep, it's the sperm that may get things moving.
I think though too that for sex to bring on labour, the cervix has to be ripe or close to being ready to go anyway IYKWIM.
One of the midwives at my hospital recommends that you have sex every day to get the 'induction effect'.
Last time I just laughed. But now that I'm trying for a vbac and need labour to start spontaneously.... I'm ready to try anything!
Just a word of warning... please go gently. DTD induced my labour with ds, but it did something to membrames and I bled evrywhere. Quite scary. So sex is good, but not rough sex
*ahem*.
So take it easy ;)
I wondered about this myself and was told that if all "Three things" happen with nipple stimulation while the cervix is ripe or ready then theres a high chance of natural induction ;)
Prostaglandins do stimulate labour, but the thing that stimulates contractions is when you have an orgasm because an orgasm makes your uterus contract :D You're more likely to stimulate labour by having a bath with your vibrator, than by letting your husband ..... So that's good news for you all
I believe and blame sex for the early arrival of our little girl - I was in early labor the next day...so all of the above worked for me...
God love ya Ali - I told DH that tonight is his ticket and if doesn't work then he isn't getting it again til after the baby is here.......talk about pressure!
I'm way to sore for sex :( I feel to swollen and sore i dont think it would be able to even happen
Hmm we do have a shower head that is removable lol
Hee hee Mummy2 remember Sunday is Valentines Day... he might get another go then!?
haha Ali you are one funny woman - gotta love it...
TMI - everyone is talking about how they dont want sex after having a baby, I am killing for it, and HAVE to wait for stitches to heal...come on!
Whatever works for you ;)
 Ali, I gotta say I agree!
Oh I know that "they" say it is supposed to bring it on but seriously :o:o who are "they?"
My oh so obliging DH is like a dog on heat at the moment waiting for me to say "oh hurry up lets go" but I have news for him and its all bad.
I may have to steal the remote batteries and go run me that bath!!
Oh i miss sex!!! I know missionary was always considered boring but I would give anything for good old fashioned missionary!!!!!
Also, i have heard that the ingestion of prostoglandins worked better than DTD, has anyone else heard this rumour or is my husband trying to pull a fast one? LOL
Not that i would mind, that is kinda working for me right now anyway.
I would love good old fashioned missionary as well! Or maybe just sex without needing to go pee halfay through
I have heard that ingestion is meant to work, dunno how it compares to DTD though.

HAHA i just told DF about this and he was looking a bit excited :) lol
There are prostaglandins in sperm and that is what is in the gel that is sometimes used for induction, however there is 200times more prostaglandin in the gel than there is in sperm!
An orgasm actually contracts the uterus which is why some women find it a little painful after orgasm
So both can help!
So Shell... 200 BJ's might do the trick then!!!
It's on the agenda for me and DH this weekend!!!
Oh god yes, I miss sleeping on my tummy!
Ha ha, we're a bunch of typical pregnant ladies.... the conversation started with DTD, detoured via BJ's and vibrators, and ended up with sleeping!!
lol love it Ali lol
Sorry....TMI?
DTD on Friday night (and Sunday morning - well he HAS been away a fair bit!! LOL) and I had regular BHs all day Saturday and Sunday - approximately half hour apart. They would start with pre-menstrual "heavyness" feeling then build up to a painless tightening, plus some discomfort in the lower back.
I'm having them again today, although I don't think they are as regular.
Can I just say, pregnancy makes you really inventive in bed
