I have recently found out something VERY important about looking after Bamboo.
If they are left with Urine in them for over 24 hours they will eventually disintegrate. To prevent this it is now recommended that the nappies get rinsed before putting in the bucket or washed every day. This should hopefully prevent you losing any more nappies.

wow - that would explain why one of my night nappies has just disintergrated! grrr, oh well a lesson learnt, now to wash every day, or at least rinse them...
Now I know why my pumpkin pop-in and one of my CT has done this. Good to know.

Gotta say, I've never rinsed my bamboo ones, and we haven't washed very frequently since April last year, and haven't had any disintegrating or any issues at all. We use green kids bamboo inserts.
I'd heard that's the case with most mcn's- shouldn't dry pail them for more than 24 hours, because the ammonia fumes will eat into most fabrics and elastics... :dunno: but I'm new at this, so don't take my word for it :rofl:
Hmm I didn't know either, I dry pail for a day or two, well was washing dailiy until I got some more IB's this week, so looks like I will be rising daily now, thanks Alioops!

Any ideas on how long to disintegrate? I wash every other day and don't rinse and to be honest am not keen on rinsing as the dry pailing appeals ease point as view as well as trying to limit water consumption. I use Green Kids Bamboo inserts - if the disintegrate is 5 years then would continue as I am - 8 months in so far and no sign of inserts disintegrating.
Is a shame if dry pailing is no good because, I think will put people off using cloth.
Well I'm still to get a bamboo nappy disintegrate after 3 years of using them, but I guess it might happy one day as some others have experienced it. :dunno: Thanks for posting anyway Alioops.
Mmmm, maybe it has to do with the urine? As in some kid's will wreck the bamboo faster than others, ITMS?
I definitely noticed bamboo disintergration, I used to dry pail and wash every second day. I don't think soaking will put me off using cloth, although dry pailing is obviously easier. TBH, all of this does make me think again that although MCN has some great benefits, flats are so much easier!

Yes i discovered this the hard way with a GF :( I was in tears, I love those nappies! At least it was only the insert but still :(

I havent had anything like that happen at all and ive used cloth now for 3 1/2 years full time.
I wonder if its cause most people put a lid on their nappy buckets and the um.....nasties have time to get warm and generate heat in effect causing the fumes to eat into the bamboo ect. Im so glad that I use a swivle top lid bin.....my nappies even though soiled, air and NO I dont pre rinse at all and dont have any smell in my laundry due to it.

hmmm I've been thinking about this today too. Like Maz, I wonder if it is due to the lid. My laundry's pretty airy and I rarely put a lid on the bucket except when other people are over (it sits on the bench). In my 3 years use I've never had an issue either.
Will be wary though.

I'm thinking of buying cloth sanitary pads and am wondering if the bamboo in those would do the same thing with blood? Blood, I think, is more alkaline than acid... :think:

Good point Ali. I might start leaving the lid off too Maz! I wonder if the ammonia evaporates and therefore disintegrates the fabric less?
Bath - I don't dry pail my cloth pads - I rinse them off with the LS then put them into a jar of water - and wash daily HTH
I dry pail my cloth pads and have only had a problem with one of them that I made 3 years ago and it was due to poor quality PUL.
I just remember how 'hot' the nappies seemed when I use to dry pail with the lid on and the smell of it too....:sick:

I chuck my MCN's into the washing machine and they get washed with everything else. Didn't notice disintegration with the Peapods with DS (and used them full time), and this time I'm not using any nappy full-time, so they're not getting wet as often. Interesting, will pass this on!
While we're on the topic, is it ok to just throw them in the wash with everything else? I do a load a night anyway, with minimal washing powder coz ds gets excema, and I've just been dropping them in with everything else. not many stinky ones but- she only does one poo a week at the moment anyway.
i dont see any harm in doing it but me personally....sorry I cant wash my nappies knowing my kids wee'ed in them with my undies and other items..just a ick factor for me
So the bucket doesn't smell with no lid? Really? I have a lid and it seriously stinks in there!! Might try leaving it off. But even with pooey ones?? DD is a pooper, still doing 2 a day, lol.

I'm assuming my washing machine is telling the truth when it says it's washing and rinsing :p So, yeah, I'm happy to chuck it all in together! Pooey nappies get a rinse, but as I use the Eenies nappy liners to catch most of it and do EC for most poos, that's not an issue for us.
Leaving the washing machine open till a wash is much nicer on the nose than closing it, so I reckon a closed bucket is gonna be a lot more offensive than an open one, too.
We've started leaving the lid off as well, I think from sheer lazyness on DH's half cause he is the one home with Fred when I am at work :rolleyes: and there is less stinkyness than before...
But if you had a little squirt then you could just rinse them with that after each nappy change... But on the safe side (we don't have a ls, I'm going to do my washing every morning so the nn doesn't sit in wee all day ;)
being the paranoid person i am, i listened (very early on in our mcn using time) to other people's posts about nappies disintegrating, holey fabric, amonia etc, and decided to do our MCN wash once a day, in the morning, so the night nappy just taken off, virtually got done in - max - a few hours after being taken off.
we ddidn't experience any disintegration or holey fabric issues. so i think the theory posted works.
i little squirted the nappies straight after the nappy change (except if out, then they stayed in wetbag until i got home), and the nappies sat in a nappy bucket (with lid) until morning (when nappy wash load was done).
but wet pailing WOULD put me off (if that was the ONLY option). the weight of it, which means more heavy lifiting, i feel for me it was the choice between the heavy lifting involved in wetpailing, or the absence of heavy lifting by using the Little Squirt. So with the post-delivery complications, the only option for me was the LS.
using MCN is a customisable thing - each of us have different house layouts, different climatic conditions, differnt babies who wee and poo a bit different. it's not a "follow the instrucitons" and you'll be right type skill. you have to apply it to YOUR situation and modify as you go along. i like that. stopped me from becomign a mummy robot i think - working it out, made me problem solve, think. getting stumped, made me look for help, get out of my comfort zone, chat to strangers on forums like this, helped me be more social than i otherwise would have been.
i'm glad (in retrospect) everything DIDN"T go like clockwork, otherwise i wouldn't have met all these amazing mums. plus it gives you people to share teh positives with too, when all the people you know in real life, (who are not interessted remotely in MCN) just wouldn't get it.
Yep,, I think I got rid of our nappy bucket lid within 3 week lol Never had ANY issues - even with BumG elastic that everyone seems to have...perhaps this os why? And Bump has some SERIOUSLY pongy wees lol!:
