What are your indulgences?

Ok, so everyone is trying to save money on their grocery shopping...but there are somethings I just won't scrimp on.

My favorite teabags, madura premium
Really good quality shredded marmalade
Premium mixed juice from the refrigerator area - everyone else gets the regular stuff (they drink a lot more juice than me, I prefer quality over quantity)
And I admit that the occasional punnet of blueberries comes home and they're usually gone by the time anyone else peers into the fridge :lol:

What are your grocery indulgences?

fresh fruit/vegies and meat

oh and maple syrup, has to be the real stuff not maple flavoured!

Oh yeah, I'm with you on the maple syrup. And the toilet paper!

oo and mayo has to be the nice whole egg stuff not that kraft guff!

Toilet paper - but out of the 2-3 I like, one is always on special :)

I'm loyal to a particular brand of soy milk, so I guess that too.

DD's washing powder (Planet Ark... expensive)
Dish washing detergent (from health stores)
Hand soaps (expensive brand with no nasties)
Milk (good brands)

Um a few other things but can't think of them right now! Generally we buy the brands that are on special but of course sometimes you like only one brand, depends what it is.

None here. The last few months we've been barely able to get hombrand versions of the essentials. Dh now has a new job, and (I'm sure this will be to his horror) once the extra money comes in I have no intention of changing from the generic versions of a lot of things.

The few indulgences we *will* be going back to are

honey - we will actually buy some
premium beef mince instead of 3 star
organic or at least free range eggs

actually that's about it. It's more that we will be able to buy things that we have had to cut back on than changing brands as such.

we buy 'farmhouse' milk, because it tastes better
and the eggs with the smiley face on them because I think they are cute and we dont buy cage eggs anyway.:D
I wont buy homebrand bread either, but homebrand for everything else if fine by me.

We love Salmon... for just the two of us it's usually $15 so that is a bit of an indulgence, and we do have it twice a week.

Mmm - definately decent tea. I do tend to switch brands depending on mood and what's on special, but stick to the better ones

Oats - must be Carmen's or Lowan's. Won't touch the homebrand there even though it is way cheaper

MD - I am with you on the tea - we get Madura Premium Leaf Tea - when we moved from the UK a few years ago we were firmly hooked on PG tips which you can't get here unless go to special shops and so tried the Madura and now is only one will buy, and all our guests who visit from the UK always comment on what nice tea it is too (my mum must drink about 12+ cups of tea a day!)

DH won't eat home brand beans, but I put HP sauce on mine so buy home brand for myself. Apart from the tea can't think what else from supermarket indulge on - and save the indulgences up for the once a month trip to the farmers market.

I do buy the Planet Ark washing powder for DD's clothes and nappies but don't count as an indulgence because am only half way through second box and she is 9 months old so although is expensive in comparison lasts much longer so is actually cheaper I reckon.

Good quality chocolate (everyone's version of quality is different). In fact I get a nice one from Aldi that is not too expensive.

Yoghurt..I don't normally like yoghurt so I tried to find one I would eat. Love the Gippsland Organic one and Jalna.

Toilet Paper- even when I go to Costco I try and get 3ply.
Soy Sauce

Well...really I tend to picky on alot of grocery items. I would rather go without than change to another brand that I don't like.

I am finding myself becoming more and more indulgent at the supermarket (little rewards for me!!)

The toilet freshener thing that you squirt onto the side of the toilet, instead of the cage blocks


There are surely way more than this. I also indulge where I think the packaging of the item is helpful! Eg, the upside down sauce bottles, so you don't have to shake the sauce, the wraps that come in a zip lock bag, upside down shampoo bottles, etc!

OK I'm odd.

I will substitue most items with a cheaper brand.

THe only things i will not are:

Fetta cheese - must be dodoni.
Twinnings Tea bags
Oil - must be Extra Virgin Olive

otherwise we are pretty flexible in our shopping

and a good magazine from the shops.. once in a while!

Mayo, toilet paper, coffee and cerial are the regular things

Occaisionally I get the exxy ice cream (sarah lee, homer hudson or connosieur are my scrumptious favourites!), yoghurt (jalna, or yoghurt from the deli), chocolate (love baci chocolates, dove individually wrapped ones, or 'choc heaven' mix form a choc shop in chatswood!)

REading through, there are definitely some more on my list -
Definitely free range, never ever get cage eggs
I'm happy to buy homebrand for a lot of things but not their pasta
Also gotta have the 333's gherkins cos they're the only crunchy sweet ones (I"m addicted :lol: we go through a jar a fortnight)

WYSIWYG - well if the Brits think it's good tea then it is! :) I"ve converted a few of my friends over the years too

We're pretty budget shoppers, but now you mention it I suppose I do have my 'things'. I guess the way to justify it is that if we got the cheapest loo paper, we might end up using more anyway...well I will tell myself that! :lol:

- Moccona coffee (in my defense, I'll only get it if it's on special, and I'm thankful it's always on special when we need it!)
- loo paper (Quilton, because it's not too exy and 'loves your bum' makes me laugh)
- Jalna yoghurt (after Janie and Olive told me to look at how much sugar was in my normal yoghurt!). If we're really strapped, we just won't get yoghurt at all.
- Mayo (but same clause as yoghurt)

So there you are. A few luxuries, and I'm sure there are more! It seems we tend to go without rather than get a brand we don't like. A week without yoghurt or mayo never killed us! :D

Meat!- I would rather have less meat meals than buy meat from the supermarket- I buy organic chicken and good quality meat from a butcher and we really notice the difference.
DH has pepsi max not homebrand cola.

Most stuff I buy from Aldi though to save money. Some times I spoil myself with Connoisseur pomegranate and raspberry yoghurt which I LOVE!
