Do you think we could do it again?

I feel a bit silly asking this as we're still probably about a year away from trying for another child, but I'm getting myself stuck in the mind-set that we can't have another child because I don't think we can do the same thing that we did with naming the first child and it's not fair to any others... I freely admit that is an irrational thought!

To explain... Our surname begins with an M. Before we'd even discussed names together both DH and I had the same idea completely separate to each other. If we had a boy, to name him Samuel and give him a middle name starting with an A so that we could call him Sam and his initials would also be SAM. And so we did - Samuel Angus. The fact that both names have significant meanings to us also helped.

Do you think it would be possible to come up with another name where the child's nickname could be their initials as well?

And I apologise in advance for the number of names I will reject through family or friends already using it or because I just plain don't like it!

I wanted Pip to be Patrick Iain P... for his nickname ... DH didn't like it, so we compromised on Patrick John P.... which is sorta close enough.

It was one of my wants for a boy, that his nickname & initials would match ...

We can't use Ian as a middle name as it's a BIL's name and I'm determined not to use any family names at all. I suspect that rules out any of the XIM names for boys as I can't think of any other decent boys names that DH would agree to starting with an I.

Close friends have also taken Tim and Tom, and if we go for Jim from James - well, that's another BIL's middle name.

Kim from Kimberley wouldn't be too bad, I'm just not a big fan - comes down to one of the pitfalls of being a teacher.

Tamara is the name of a friend at church. Not a particularly close friend, but one that we see often enough for it to be odd.

We have thought about this too, but only with girls' names, as our surname is an A name.

The nickname doesn't necessarily have to be an abbreviation of the first name, either. It could just be an alternative for a nickname. Thinking like that, you could do a lot, like JEM, NIM, ROM etc.

Or you could just be mean and roll with SPAM...

DOM from Dominic was a favourite when naming Sam - but a close friend called their son Dominic and we see them often enough for it to be weird, I think. The same friends called their second son Liam - which is a shame as I could go with that one! Name thieves!

Pam... pass... unless you can come up with something other than pamela that starts the same way!

Audax, you can come up with some really nice names there... I can see why you'd only do it for a girl, though.

Obviously coming up with some sort of name where this will work isn't going to be the deciding factor in whether or not we have a second child (more likely to be whether embryos defrost or not!), but it's been a weird stress bugging me lately and I do need to make it go away.

i had a friend whos initials were SCAM but it probably wouldnt be a nickname i cant do it with my last name coz it starts with an F DS's initals are JKGF so yeah no sense in that

I was about to suggest Cam :). Sam and Cam kind of sound different - the emphasis on the "am" sounds slightly different (well I think so anyway LOL). Samuel & Cameron sound fine together :)

For a girl - Tam could be short for Tamsyn instead of Tamara?

Dim - Dimity - I like Dimity, though you wouldn't want her to adopt the term Dim hey?

I always wanted to do this (from along time ago with a previous boyfriend who had a B surname) anyway now we have an M surname and might well do it with any future children. Did not do for DD - is more difficult for girls as you say. I can't think of any haven't already been mentioned. Tamsyn is a good one. Cameron can of course be used for a girl as well.

Oh and just thought of another Simone for a girl, SIM.

We also have a Jemima so that's out and when we went so close to Simeon before I don't think it would be appreciated if we went so close to Jemima as well - it's a shame as I love Gemma and would LOVE a Gem... And it's not like they are distant relatives, either. :(

Jeremy - the name of an ex-boyfriend (Simon, too) and that just feels kind of icky.

Do you think the *EM would work for girls... I can't think of any names, unfortunately! *EM doesn't feel right for boys.

LOL!!!! We called our son Samuel Ashley (last name starts with M) for the same reason, and we are TOTALLY struggling with naming this one! DH want's GEM... having said that however, our first baby was Hannah Roisin - but the reason we liked Hannah was because it is a palindrome (spelled the same backwards and forwards)....so DH has to find something quirky and cool to call this new baby (a girl according to 20 week scan). I guess my point is that you can find meaning and quirkiness in more than one way... You could try palindromes, or other associated non-word three-letter-acronym's (Our first is HRM - Her Royal Majesty, or Human Resource Manager - which has turned out to be somewhat predictive of her nature, she LOVES to boss around her little brother). If you end up having a girl, keep in mind that they may choose to change their last name if they marry, and all that hard work thinking up cool initials will be all for nothing!

More random thoughts...

You could try alliteration (all MMM's)

You could find something with the 'other' vowel - Y! (i.e. KYM)

You could make the initials mean something numerical i.e. On a keypad, M=6, or it’s the 19th letter of the alphabet – you could make it all add up to something significant like your anniversary etc.

That way you can still tell your 2nd child that you thought long and hard about making their name not only interesting, but in a different way to their sibling :)

Failing that - you may need to look to the four letter options...this can be an amusing exercise if nothing else.

Oh and "Imogen" and "Isabelle" are nice "I" names

Oooh I wish we had of thought of that, would've worked with our DS too, his name is Ashley (Ash for short) and our surname starts with H... Too bad his middle names is Charles (after my Dad and Grandfather)...

Anyway a couple of ideas that popped into my head:

OK...so I'm totally stumped on name choices for you....BUT have you thought about the sound of the initials???

My surname starts with C and we had decided for this bub to name her Darcie....so I suggested my middle name Renee....which would make the initals DRC, which said as ititials, kind of sound like you're saying Darcie IYKWIM!!?

Maybe you can try from that angle too?

Ioan (pronounced Yo-an...almost like Euan I guess, depending on your accent).

Minimax, my maiden name also started with an M - I was nearly a RAM... So yeah, I can fully understand that there are certain things you DON'T want to have pop up in initials, but I still like the idea...

But when it comes to Hamish - Hamish is a lovely little dog that belongs to a friend of ours. I don't think I could call a child of ours Hamish... especially when the only human Hamish I have encountered as a teacher was kind of in the ruining the name forever category.

I'm starting to think another *AM name would be a bit much... so starting to think more of other vowels in there for the middle name...

Then again, even if we ended up with something like Sam and Kim... I'm starting to think it all sounds a bit blurgh.

I was going to suggest the initials thing similar to MiniMax's suggestion...

One of DPs friend's passed away when DP was 16 and his name was Chris - DPs initials are KRS we wanted to do something like that to honor his friend as we didn't want to use Chris or Christopher as the first name for a boy... but we decided on a boy's name that began with an O and hadn't decided on a middle name.

We had planned to do it for a girl as we had chosen a C name but we ended up going with an M middle name as the two names we chose just went together so well. We couldn't decide on a girl's R name to save us.

I hope you can work it out BW - it is something I can see myself having done.

Haha BW, DH came to me the other week and said we should have give Tara 2 middle names so her initials spelt her name. Surname starts with an A and her middle name is Rose.. so TRA. So he now reckons for the second one we will have to have initials that are the same as the name.

For a girl it's easy for me as I like the names Mia & Ava and DH's mums name is Valerie, Tara's middle name Rose is after my mum.. But I for the life of me can't think of any short boys names ending in A.

Oh well maybe all my frosties just need to be girls then problem solved.
