We have a 7.5kg Whirlpool front loader for the 3 of us....we'll do about 3 loads a week plus cloth nappies every second day. I think it's a good size for our family and very efficient on water. Only qualm I have with it is the long washing times but I think all front loaders are like that. When I lived at home my folks had a 8kg top loader and that was the perfect size for a family of 4.
My baby is a 7.5kg fisher & paykel smart drive. It has water saving features on it & you can choose different wash times.
It also has a button for soaking & you can set a timer to start in 1, 3 or 9 hours.
Its a great size for 5 of us & I'm sure it'll be fine for 6 as well. It fills just over the average washing basket after a full load.
I love it to pieces :)
My MIL has an 8kg Hoover. She bought it about 12 months before I bought mine, so its about 3 years old & she's had alot of trouble. The fill level plays up & it sometimes keeps filling when full & over flowing. I've used it a few times & I don't think it washes very well at all TBH. Every time I've used it there's always fluff or powder residue or something on the clothes (& she keeps it very clean) & it just isn't as good with the kids clothes, or dirty cloth nappies! There are 5 of them most of the time. They wash about a load a day, including all towels, sheets etc.
We have a Simpson 7kg Ezi Sensor for the 3 of us and it's a good size. We had a 4.5kg top loader but wanted to get a bigger one after we had DD. It is slower than the top loader but I find it definitely washes a lot better!
I have a 9kg front loader and it doesn't fit a queen sized doona in it :doh:
We have an 8kg (8.5kg?) Fisher & Paykel AquaSmart and love it. But like Tinks, the Queen size doona is too squishy! :( Apart from that though, it's a fantastic size. I wouldn't go any smaller than an 8kg for us personally.

9.5kg Simpson top loader for a family of 4 (5 by the end of the year!). Love it, not too big at all. You simply set the water level to suit the size of the load, also has an 'EcoWash' water saving feature. Fits are king sized doona without a problem and is great for washing the kids bedding. I need a toploader because I ALWAYS forget to put something in and have to add it once the cycle has already started!!
We have a 6.5kg Simpson at the holiday house and I am washing there CONSTANTLY as the loads are so much smaller - drives me nuts!!
we have a LG 8kg Washer/4kg dryer combo front loader, and it's enough for us.
We have a 7.5kg Electrolux FL. I like it. There are 5 of us and I do 1 - 2 loads per day.
I've got the biggest Fisher and Paykel - 9kg I think. It's an aqua smart so it sets it's own water level so there is no wastage even with a small load, and it's big enough that it fits our king sized doona in.
I have the 9.0kg Simpson EZI sensor machine top loading. It is AWESOME!!!! Same as what nickle said. We only have tank water and this machine uses LESS water than my old 4.5kg Simpson did!! I had the 4.5kg simpson for 11 years and only replaced it 18 months ago because we outgrew it and I was sick of doing up to 4 loads of washing in a day for the 6 of us. The size is perfect for the 6 of us and I hope to get as long out of it as I did my little one. I think you should get one that is big enough to wash blankets etc because that was the only downfall of my small one - great machine but too small to wash blankets and sheets. I couldn't even fit a single bed sheet set in it at the one time to wash it. So 8kg may seem huge, but once you are washing extra linen, you will be glad you went for a bigger one.
We have a 6.5kg LG front loader. I think it's a bit small for the 3 of us. I often have to split loads cause there's too much. Or maybe we just get changed too often lol!
I have the same as Clover - 7.5kg Fisher and Parkle it suits us 4, unless I get lazy and dont out a load of washing on everyday

When I had the man out to service it, (the cold water thingy went on it, only cost $80 to repair) he said these were great machines and better than the F & P Aquasmart ones. Although reading some of the other posts, people seem happy with their Aquasmart too.

Ours is a 5kg top loader and works just fine for 5 people.
We have an 8kg Samsung top loader and love it. We are a family of 3 but we have HEAPS of washing including DH's work clothes (plumber so very very dirty) and everything comes out so so clean. It has the choice of a fast wash or a long wash and automatically senses the size of the load so no wasted water here either.
ours is 8.5kg and its great i love it it fits a queen doona and a king comforter obviously not at the same time lol for 3 of us its massive but i love that i can wash blankets really quickly i do nappies every 2 days and clothes about once or twice a week one or 2 loads
we have a 7.5kg front loader, it seemed so huge when we got it as we upgraded from a 20+ year old top loader that was probably only 3 or 4 kg!!
does the job well for us and it gets a fair workout, nappies about every 2 days, probably average a load of clothes every few days, plus towels/sheets etc.

We have a 4.5kg front loader and it does 2 of us fine. Although we only have to do 2-3 loads a week currently, so I'm thinking it will be enough for when bub enters.
Ours is really good with water and you can adjust the temperature through a heater rather than using hot water. Only thing is they do tend to take a lot longer to wash, but everything always comes out clean

We recently bought a 5.5kg Miele front loader. Love it! We can fit more in it than we could with our old Simpson 6.5 kg top loader.
Our Miele fits a queen sized doona. Our Simpson didn't.
When we were looking at machines, I thought a 5.5kg would be too small for us (family of 5), but it has been perfect.
I have a 7.5kg for me and the two boys. I find it just the right size to wash every 3-4 days, towel loads, linen loads and of course 2 days worth of nappies! Any smaller and I think I'd have to double the amount of loads I do!
