Looking for VERY unique boys names

I have a thing about unique names- probably comes from working with children and having heard every name before ;)

My husband named our son, Espen which is popular-ish in Scandinavia but you don't hear it much here. I have full naming rights on this baby and I'm sorted for a girl's name as I still love the one I wanted last time but I'm feeling so lost on boys names.

For our son I loved:
Jasper
Felix
But they have both increased in popularity and I'm glad we didn't name him them anymore (though I still LOVE Felix so it's sad to let that one go).

Other names I like but I think they're too popular:

A couple of names I'm considering are:

Paxon (Paxton is getting popular in the states though)

The problem with very unique names is I've often never heard of them before so I'd love to hear some suggestions if anyone has them. Thanks! :D Oh, I also love names with an X or Z in them!

How about a nice Aboriginal name? I liked Banjora, but DP didn't like any of the boy names I found :(

Hmm- I looked for Aboriginal names last time but don't seem to have any, will have to look. I met a Banjo the other day so I think that would be out for me. Thanks for mentioning you know an Otto- I think it's getting popular-ish too. I know a few Otis' are around but I do know of one Otto (a friends son's friend) so I guess that's out.

Arlo is kinda funky- haven't heard it before.

I like Zephyr- but I have a friend whose son's name abbreiviates to Zep and I'm trying to work out if I can do it. I also LOVE Zeke but our surname starts with KE so it doesn't work.
I know an Ari and I like Dash but I worry about copying celeb names... though my girl's name is a celeb name now too.

Torren's nice :) I've known of one a few years ago.
I think the 'danger' for us in a lot of the less known names was that they can sound a bit too soft. I mean even for girl names! I like a hard consonant somewhere ;)

I think part of the issue, as well, is getting over the fact that someone else may have that name. I loved DS's name and it was for reasons other than hardly anyone had it. But I did know of one or two boys in our area with it and decided I didn't care because I loved the meaning, its origin and one of the namesakes :)

I don't know if I can completely let the popularity thing go though. If I did then I would name this child Felix- no question. So maybe I need to look into that more. It's currently in the top 300, maybe it wont move more?? And that is why Otto is still on my list, as having heard of one is hardly reason to say it's TOO popular. I guess I've never gelled with my son's name and a part of me would feel bad to give another son a really popular name while he's got this "weird" name. My issues there.

I heard the name Tahi about 5 years ago. Its a Maori name that means one, or number one. I love it.

Actually, I think the only Milo I know of is another friend of my same friend's son. He knows an Otis, Milo and Otto but I haven't actually met anyone with those names myself yet. I met a Sullivan for the first time today! I like Jarvis and Zed (actually I think Zed is already on my list). Jericho is cool actually- shortened to Jeri is simple too. Whay aren't you using it?

Do you think Baxter is popular? AFAIK, there are no other Baxter's on the forums except for mine (haven't seen any listed in any sig's) and I know of only 1 other IRL. I think you may have commented on my thread about Cool Names That Go With Baxter, although we have decided on our names, I am loving some on the suggestions on this thread. I did like Jasper for this bub but it has become a bit more popular. Felix is cool though, I love X names.

You're right- I did say go with Baxter! That was before I was pregnant- I was trying to sell Baxter to a friend IRL too :D I LOVE the name!

You're probably all right about many of the names not actually being that popular but if you search for Felix for example on the nameberry blog there is a blog post about the most popular searched names on that website and all my faves are on there- a sign that they may be about to increase in popularity. Jasper is the only one currently in the top 100 Australian names though I think.

I commented a lot on the Cool Names to Go With Baxter thread, so I've doubled up on a lot. It is a very cool name, but I think it is rising in popularity. That said, Jasper is waaaay more common - I have worked with a LOT of Jaspers, and the one I have right now is a right challenge! But I do love the combo of Espen and Jasper!

We're not using Jericho... I don't really know why. It's not really "us" and DH is pretty conservative, name-wise. I would very much like you to use it though.

Ohhh reading all the X names had me so excited. I think it HAS to be an X name- I love them. I remember that X name thread- I'll have to find it and have another read through.

I thought Espen and Jasper would go together- after my son was born I figured I'd name the next boy Jasper but then I realised some people think Espen is Aspen and it would look like we're big Canada fans :lol: And Jasper is too popular now anyway.

The Sullivan I met was only 9 months old- same boy Audax?

I am a bit loathe to share my girl's name because I'm always so scared everyone will jump on it and use it and make it popular. But it's rarely that well received so I'm probably safe... it's Ramona. I love it so much! That's why my son is called Espen... my H vetoed Ramona but I couldn't in a million years call a daughter anything else so I gave him full naming rights of a boy if I could name a girl. :D

Science fiction shows are actually quite good for unique names ;) You could make one up yourself using a sci-fi name as a "base" ITMS?

Heh heh- you could stike a deal like I did :lol: I've always thought I was having two boys anyway but I'm not giving up on Ramona till this baby is born and if it's a boy I told my H we have to get a girl dog and call her Ramona!

There is a tradition going back many generations in my H's family that the first born boy gets his father's first name as his middle name. So our son has my H's name as his middle name and in the interest of gender equality I decided that Ramona would get her Mum's name so she'll be Ramona Renee. I like the aliteration :D

But we should get back to boys names because all this talk of Ramona makes me want a girl SOOO badly and I feel bad for this poor little boy I'm sure is growing in my belly!

Oh, on the path of middle names I think this baby's middle name will be Dawson. I wanted a family name from my side this time and Dawson is my Dad's middle name. I don't get along super well with my Dad though I love the name and I think he'd be chuffed I used his name.

Dawson is a beautiful name.

I love my Dad's name, but I don't get along that well with my Dad, so half don't want to use it. He gets called by his middle name anyway, so it's sort of not his. Trying to convince DH to use it on the grounds that it would be after a cyclist (Robbie McEwen) He's not all the way there yet.

Definitely could not strike any Ramona deals with my DH. Which is fine, as we have loads of other girls names that I love. All of our bikes are also named - we have 10, so it's easier to tell them apart that way. I have Laila, Susie, Ramona and Xena. He has Mario, Arthur, Roy, Eric, Sunny and Bruce. I also have a Melbourne bike called Tina.

Anyway, to get back on topic... did I include Huxley and Ridley on the list?

I just came across a name in another forum that I haven't heard anywhere else. (and that forum is North American so you're pretty safe... :) ) Not an X name, but I still thought it was cool: Orion. I thought it might be nice that he could go by the full version if he wanted to be unique, or shorten it to Rion (Ryan) if he wanted a little more "common sounding" name.

We ended up naming our babe Archie.... It wasn't on our list but he just looked like an Archie and I'm so glad we chose it, it really suits him!

This time round we like Sonny for a boy and Lola for a girl...... So far!!

I knew an Orion in primary school, it's an awesome name but for me I always think of that boy. His brother was Casper so two cool names :)

I LOVE Lola- that would be my second daughter's name if I was going to have one :)
