I got a new horse! *Updated with sad news*

ARGH! He's gorgeous, and now I have two. Mind you, I haven't seen much of my own horse lately... :( But I WILL!! MIL will be back soon, so she can help with DS so that I can get out to the paddocks. Once we've got somewhere set up to live on weekends I'll move the horses over. Actually, I'll leave them where they are until I've given the new one a bit more education, cos where they'll be will have a full sized arena and supervision. And...DP is down with all of this...this never happens!
Plus, this horse will be mainly his once he's got more education and we're living at the farm. Which is a shame cos I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally like him ;)
Anyway, I'm pretty chuffed. I just have to get him from there to here, and he's in Kilmore ATM. Ex-racer till last year and has a beautiful temperament. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for me!

I have got to stop making sneaky clothing purchases from here on in, cos this boy needs rugs! And a bit and my saddle may need refitting. Looks like I'm going back to equine poverty...happily, though!
He's got some scarring on a hind leg, so he won't be appearing in no show ring (nothing wrong with his front end, though!). I'll share pics on FB when I manage to get some - had camera but I was riding and DP was holding the girl...who, sadly, has never seen me ride till today.

oh yay!!! dont worry mayaness i dont have any kids (yet) and i still only get the chance to ride on the weekend every now and then! by the time i get to the paddock during the week its dark :( i can't wait for summer to be back!

Ummm...YES! I'm looking for a pony at least, and a Clydie sounds perfect for DP (though this horse is supposed to be for DP, sort of ;) ). Only, I need to wait till closer to the moving date cos I can't afford to agist any more for now :( Can you hold onto them till about October (or whenever the shed is 'weekend-ready')? Cos then I'll move them all on together.
There's plenty of grass for them, I'd be surprised if the TB needs much supp feeding, actually, once we're on the farm.
I need a mare, though, to be the mummy of my Irish Cob cross or Friesian cross!

We got two miniature ponies last week. Our first horses. Sooooo exciting and they are so so sweet. My boys adore them. Enjoy your new baby!

Lost him :( About 2 hours ago. Broke his leg and was put down before I could get there. He was warm when I said goodbye to him in the paddock. I think it's just hitting me now, so I won't stay on.
I don't want to talk about it on facebook, either, for those I'm friends with there.
DP has gone down to the farm, as planned (bit later than planned, cos of this) and I've cancelled my plans for the day to process it. Thankfully DS is with my parents in the country, but it won't be easy telling him our new boy is gone.
Stoopid horses. He was just so beautiful and I was going to have a friend mind DD while I rode him on Tuesday.

oh this is heartbreaking. He looked like a great big stunner. Wrap yourself up and stay warm, this is a horrible shock :hug:

He was a fabulous beatie. I feel so, so cheated - for me, for DP, for DS, mainly for DP. I had plans, dammit :( So unfair.
My own horse goes weeks and weeks between visits and then I get up to see them both just about every day this week and he goes down a week to the day of getting him, two weeks to the day of meeting him.
DP has just sent me some pics of our cattle and our big dog sniffing the steers - it's managed to bring a smile to my face. What a welcome to rural life this week has been. Get steers, lose horse :( It just sucks arse so hard that I can't believe it.
Fire is going now. I've had offers of company but will lay low for the rest of the day. I lost my first horse just over 10 years ago.
DP never even got to ride Handsome. He was sooooooooooo pleased with himself this week when I got him a bridle.
I've just spoken to the guy I got him from and he's going to talk to his wife about giving us our money back. I've told him it would be great if he could and that I understand they have no obligation to do that. He didn't cost that much, but it would help with the cost of the knackery taking him away.
He was so sweet - scared as all get out of chickens in his feed bucket, as I discovered two days ago!
We were supposed to be very, very happy together. It's so unfair :cry:

Oh no! I am so sorry for you and for Handsome. I lost one of mine about 18 months ago and I cried for days. He knew you loved him - horses can always tell and now he will be galloping around in ponyheaven with all the other wondeful horses who have left us.

Yeah, I really feel for DP. There is no real way to prepare for losing your first horse, even when you've only known him for 2 weeks. He's pretty sad about it. I'm sad, too, and I hate waking up to my second day of no Handsome :( He was just so beautiful, a perfect find. I told DP last night (as much as he's probably not ready to hear it yet) that at least Handsome has set the standard - if a horse we try doesn't feel completely honest we move on and keep looking.
I have remembered, too, that when he came home and I told him the news he was holding out a bottle of Neatsfoot oil he had just picked up - for oiling his first bridle. I hate that his happiness and preparing to ride his horse was just ripped out from under him. He doesn't let himself get excited about much and he was uncharacteristically chuffed with himself this last two weeks.
DS has taken it pretty well. He doesn't quite understand how a broken leg leads to death.
Can't help picturing our magnificent creature all decked out in new rugs, head ****ed to greet us and get a feed. He had such a light walk when on the lead rope.
We feel so deflated. A little bit inflated with the steers we now have on our farm, though, and more to come this week :)

I'm so sorry.
This poem always makes me cry, but when my first horse died, it really helped me. I still miss him & know that even though he left a big hole in my heart - he left it there to be filled by other horses.

Joeve - I think I cried for 6 months every day when I lost my first horse. When I realised I hadn't cried in a couple of days I knew I was ready to start looking again and my current horse just about landed on my lap, just by 'putting it out there'.
DP is struggling with what I found out 10 years go...somehow it's different from losing a dog. Still as painful, just there's some other kind of sentiment attached to the noble horse, I guess, that pulls on a very different set of heart strings. KWIM?
The lady who owns the place spoke to DP a bit when he went back to give her money for the knackery - I knew she would and she said there's a horse worth $100k on the property who is insured but could go in exactly the same way tomorrow. It's just a horse thing. Apparently, my case for a $15k horse is now shot to pieces ;)
Just one of those horrible things. I'm glad DS is absorbing this reality now, and able to see that it's ok to be sad, and also to know that it's part of the life we've all wanted and are now getting.
Handsome was also the first horse DD ever saw me ride, so I'm glad about that, cos the lady who introduced us to him said we made each other look good :) He was gonna be magic to ride.
It was nice to go to my riding club rally, briefly, yesterday and commisserate with my fellow horsey people. Gotta get back on my 'little' horse - was hoping for tomorrow but DS has this chest infection and it won't be fair to shuffle him off to creche just to ride my horse!

That poem is beautiful! It makes me cry now and it's been a while since my boy died. We burried my boy at our farm so I can still visit him... Infact I have seen him more than once galloping around the paddock in the moonlight since he passed.
Makes me appreciate my boys I have now that little bit more.
