It's a no no, as you really don't know when the rice was made it could still have been the day before. Maybe try making it yourself?
I craved it with both pregnancies but IMO it just wasn't worth the risk. I did make it at home but it wasn't the same. I just pigged out on it the day that I had my girls. Hehehe. MIL brought it to the hospital with a big tub of pasta salad lol
Thanks Ladies - I guess its out then  Darn it! I was SO craving it!
you have to be concerned about anything that has just been sitting around. because you have no proof as to exactly how long it has just been sitting around (esp. cold). plus raw stuff. as it is a bacteria that is dangerous, and bacteria like cold things that have been there for a while
Make it yourself. I've never done it...but i hear it is pretty easy =)
I had sushi the other day - I watched the man make it fresh for me, and the rice is made daily.
Sushi rice is made fresh daily, because you can't refrigerate it without ruining it. As such the rolls are made fresh daily, they never keep them for the next day.
ETA: I had the tuna, as it is cooked, canned tuna, not chicken or raw fish.
I think there's still a risk with the rice, even if it is refrigerated that listeria might be lurking. It's also an issue of hygiene. But if you trust the people making it then it's up to you of course! :) I didn't realize that you weren't supposed to have soft serve when pregnant and lived on macca's vanilla thickshakes during ms with DD1 and she's fine. In the end it's totally up to you :)
Blondie - I'm with you babes, I totally want sushi. What I'd really love is a big boat of sushi & sashimi :-) but even just a hand roll would do. I've made chicken and avocado rolls before so looks like I'll be doing it again.
Hand rolls do seem to be one of those things that are always featured on those highly risky food lists...
I love sushi too but when pregnant out of all things you can't eat, I definitely avoid Sushi!! Even if it's made fresh in front of you, you don't know how clean that chopping board is etc..... it's just a risky food to eat as it's prone to so much bacteria in it..... best to stay clear but thats JMO. Everyone is different.
I agree with lime---Personally i ate sushi ( as in real sushi with raw fish ) in japan with both my pregancys- hand rolls with chick and avo are generally safe if you make them yourself so it's not real sushi and know it's fresh ( rice and chicken)
I personally wouldn't eat sushi when preg even though i am much more lax with the food rules this time round i wouldn't risk it. However i do make my own, really easy to do and may not look as nice as the shops but at least you know its fresh and is oh so yummy!
If I worried about whether or not everyone's chopping board was clean or not, I would never eat anywhere! lol
Seriously though, I am more lax about these things - I eat poached eggs, and ham from the deli, although I do ask them to slice it fresh for me, I eat in restaurants and I eat rice I didn't cook, I reheat food...
But then having worked in the hospitality industry, I have more faith in the fact that people in all food businesses are very good about health and safety, and trust the fact that they have cleaned their boards correctly.
All this talk of sushi though has made me crave it, so you know what I am having for lunch today! lol
That's true LS. I agree! Although with sushi, it is far more prone to bacteria than say your average piece of bread with vegemite on it.... there was a report done it not so long ago (quite a few actually) AND I know someone who got listeria after eating sushi when they were pregnant.... very scary.
It's all about taking calculated risks I think with what we do when pregnant...... I love love love sushi but only when I'm not pregnant but thats just me. :D
I wouldnt touch it.. pregnant or not pregnant. Too many are dodgy places and I have got food poisioning too many times.
i ate it with both my pregnancies, but only in busy, very clean places where you could tell the product was fresh.
I ate it in my pg, but when I was into the 2nd, if not 3rd tri-mester & it was from a reputable place and the meat (chicken) was cooked
I guess I was just so worried, studies dont look fab... 4/5 places are contaminated.. I dont personally think its worth the risk.
No way. And it sucks, cos it's one of the few vegan take-away options.
But it is SO easy to do yourself. Buy a kit, if you don't already have the stuff you need, cook the rice as directed (smells like the real thing!) and then wrap it up! I don't even bother with mats, cos if I'm making it for myself, it can be a lot more freeform and messy. That way I know exactly what knife, chopping board etc has been used, exactly when the rice was cooked, and when the vegies were cut.
The downside? I eat about six times as much
I had it for lunch 2 days ago hun and I had it all through my pregnancy with DS. Like someone said you can't refrigerate it overnight without wrecking it, and I know the sushi deli in Garden City actually has thermometers in the sushi being sold so you can check for yourself that it is at the safe temperature. My trick is to get it early in the morning or to ask them to make me a fresh roll which they are usually more than happy to do.
I personally am more concerned by deli things in COles and places like that as I recently got food poisoning from chicken breast from coles deli.
Its the rice that is the problem with listeria and other bugs growing not the meat!!!!!!!!!!!!
More places than will have contaminated food on testing!
I would kill for some sushi but I would rather be safe than sorry I wouldn't eat it when preg
I will have DH bring some into the hospi when bubs arrives but I would rather not take the risk
I saw what happened to a friend of my sisters last year she had her bub 10 week early as a result of contracting listeria, its not a nice way to give birth
Its totaly up to the individual though but personally I wouldn't eat it when preggo
I am going to go make some now!!!
LOL this talk of sushi has made me crave tuna avo sushi hardcore!!!
This is our first and I had a friend (who owns the best sushi place in Canberra) make me fresh sushi when I went to her resturaunt and she knew I was pregnant and I could hear her yelling at them saying "make sure it's fresh! Make sure you don't touch anything else until it's made!" lol... she was def looking out for me!
I would say be very careful! Most places you can pick the gross unsafe sushi from the good quality sushi places.
I was just going to ask this question myself, as I am a HUGE sushi fan. My DD also loves it, so where ever we go she asks for it for lunch, and then of course I am tempted to sneak a piece or two! I had two pieces of tuna sushi today. I am also a tad wary about it after hearing all the warnings. I think you just need to buy it from a reputable sushi store and one where the turnover is high as mentioned. That being said I wouldnt buy myself a container for lunch, I would only sneak a piece or two of my DD's. I am so much more relaxed this time around, with my DD I followed the rules no exception!
I saw a report on TV done recently Australia wide on sushi (hand rolls) places and 4/5 places tested were contaminated with listeria, my doc told me of all the things to avoid in pregnancy hand rolls are the 1st, that rice you haven't cooked yourself, is the number one cause of food poisoning, ppl don't realise that when they get food posioning from thai or chinese etc that it's usually the rice that causes it because alot of places cook it the night before and refrigerate it. Listeria can grow in fridge temps.
You should try make it at home yourself! That way you know exactly what is going into it, and you can have any scrummy flavour you like ;)
Personally I was making sushi like a mad woman when I had DD, fresh rice made by myself, nice grilled chicken, avocado, cucumber and other goodies!
Ugh brb craving some now... lol
