The Gill Rapley one?
Good stuff isn't it!
Enjoy :)
Yeah, that very one.
It's FAB!!!!
:) :)
where did you get your copy? our bookshelves would be looking pretty similar now
 Kate. DH jokes that i should start a parenting book library!
My sister ordered my copy on amazon uk and sent it over with a pile of stuff for missy (very spoiled by her aunty!).
It's sooo much cheaper doing it that way - books are really overpriced here.
I have started lending out my pregnancy books to mates. Gotta share the good stuff.
Amazon can have great prices but sometimes the postage makes it not worth it. I have found some books for good prices from the UK on e-bay lately!
I get all mine off a great UK website. DH discovered it when hunting around for homebrew books. Free worldwide shipping and everything is cheap cheap cheap! I haven't paid more than $20 for any parenting books.
I probably have a matching bookshelf too!
We have just started BLS and it is so amazing to watch DD interact with the food. The change in just a week is really noticeable.
I refer to the book alot and find it handy to have - have fun :)
Hi, this book sounds really interesting. Can you give me a bit of an overview about it please? Does it recommend against pureed food? I am in the process of learning about solids so I am prepared in a couple of months.
Hey,
yeah, it doesn't recommend pureed foods for lots of reasons. I've just skimmed a few chapters and am about to head to bed and get into it properly but it goes into the history of babies starting solids etc and how they used to start them on bones and rusk!!!!
Anyway, I couldn't give you a very good over view at the moment, as I say, am just about to start reading it properly now.
I'll be back!
There is a website, just google Baby Led Weaning. Some info on there!

google Gil Rapley for more info
I love this book! I borrowed it from my la leche league library and have been passing it around my friends. There was no way DS was having mush after i read it. He is a real bls baby now and i couldn't spoonfeed him even if i wanted to! I absentmindedly picked up his biscuit that he had dropped and put it to his mouth and he was having none of it! He looked at me like ' i can feed myself thanks mum.' i see all the other mums in my mg desperately trying to get food into their baby's mouths and feel so glad i chose bls.
Yeah the more i read it the more I think that this is definitely the way for us.
Although, I have porridge every single morning for breakie and have done for years - will see how missy goes with it, am going to give her a spoon and I'll sit and have mine with her and see how she goes.

Just brought this book off ebay it comes from the UK ,but its only 20$ free postage ..excited to read it, we are doing BLS anyway but i have not got a book on it yet only books on mush food that now sit in a box :)
It's great Shell, you'll love it!! xx
I don't know anything about BLS at all ..... but i get the impression that basically it means we don't give our babies pureed food at all instead they are given chucks of food in the way which we would eat - is this correct??? Think i need to go and do some googling, lol.
That's exactly it Westy. It also says why giving baby pureed food isn't teaching them to "eat" properly as the puree is just going to the back of their tongues and they are sucking and swallowing as they would if they were taking milk from breast or bottle.
Cool, so at what age would you start with BLS ???
6 months :)
Ok cool.... gives me a month to look into it :)
LOL, yeah, that's my thinking too. It's also so much more convenient as baby eats basically what you eat so there is no need to prepare purees to take out etc.
What will you try giving Missy to begin with ?
DD absolutely loved sitting with a lamb chop and chewing and sucking on the bone as a baby. We used to joke she looked like a little puppy!
You do get to the point where you look at people spoonfeeding purees into their baby's mouth and think it's so weird.
My SIL talked to me about doing BLS before her DD started food and she went down this path as well. Both of us have the most independent non-fussy eaters you've ever seen. You won't regret doing BLS, I have yet to hear any negative feedback.
Gil also wrote an article in a recent ABA mag about BLS, a couple of issues back.
*Snap*
I said to DH this morning "I want to start reading about BLS. I know we've decided to do it, but I think we should read more about it and know more about it before." (What I didn't say is that I know his mother is going to freak out when she hears that we're doing BLS, so I need to arm myself with information :D)
Thanks for the book rec - I've just ordered it through the Book Depository (the cheap book distributor from the UK who also sells through eBay. Free postage!).
Cool!!n I'm really enjoying reading it, I love reading about babies now that I have one. I learn something new all the time!
I'm so excited. I can't wait to sit at the table with Evie and get going!!!!

mummasue re porridge. We didn't bother with a spoon at first. We just put a bit on his tray and he played with it and had a great time. I think he got some in! I am sure you know already from reading the book that in the first days it is mainly play and learning about texture etc. it took DS a month or so before i could be certain he had actually eaten anything at all. it took ages for him to do a solid poo and he still doesn't do many. He is so independent though unlike most of his puree fed peers! 0
westy - when they show the 3 signs they are considered ready. That is sitting up with no support at all, are able to pick things up and put then in their mouth and are showing an interest. This is usually at 6 months but could be later. they need to be showing all 3 signs.
Westy, I'm not 100% sure what we'll start with, I need to read further!
Poppyfairy, thanks for the advice on the porridge, I never thought of doing it that way - but also reading the book further, they are saying the same.
I can't wait to get started!!

think we are going to start with broccoli trees (cos easy to grab) and pumpkin.
also getting dried bananas and apples and other fruits from a mate who makes them herself from her own organic fruit but i want to start with vegies first.
We started with Bananna, brocoli ,pumpkin..she now has avo pieces ,loves toast to suck on..carrot zuchini ..
its just so much fun
Great ideas, thanks guys!! xxxx
We went on a picnic yesterday and it was so nice to give DD a few fingers of food - we all watched her and didn't really focus on our lunch! Her Nan & Pop are a little nervous about such an approach but they did well. We find she loves watermelon and orange - she will happily suck on a wedge of orange (skin on) for ages.
I also have just received my Baby led Weaning book. I bought it off ebay from a private seller. It's quite a bit smaller than I expected and has 'Not for Resale' printed on the back of the book. Does anybody else's book have this?? I'm just wondering if perhaps my book is a scaled down version?? Seems a bit dodgy!!:shakehead:
Mooks, my copy is 256 pages long, publisher is Vermillion, cost 10.99 UK pounds. It doesn't have "not for resale" on the back at all. Some books that have that are ones that came in a pack if that makes sense.
Does that help at all?

Ok I am so intrigued and interested in this! Got a couple of months to do the research.......interesting about those 3 things though. I can't imagine DD will be sitting unassisted in 2 months but I guess it's a steep developmental curve. Anyways, went onto book depository and there are 2 books that come up both by the Gill guy........one is called Baby Led Solids and the other one is called I can Feed Myself - Baby Led Solids. The latter was released 1/9/10. Do you think it's just the updated edition?
Thanks Sue, mine is also published by Vermilion, but only 124 pages!! No RRP on the back at all either... I think i have been ripped off as there was no mention of this in the item description!!! Grrrr
The book I have is called: Baby Led Weaning (in green writing) and is by Gill Rapely and Tracey Murkett.
Thanks MS :) I think I might buy the other one and then I'll be able to compared. Btw - there is a BLS cookbook going to be released soon too!
Mine is also Baby-led Weaning, by Gill Rapley & Tracey Murkett, published 2008, white cover with green writing, cute little bubba on front with green bib on... exactly the same cover as far as I can tell...
Sounds exactly the same as mine Mooks but you're short on some pages hun!
How annoying!
