Nappy rash

I've been using 1/2 cloth 1/2 spossies since bringing bubs home from hospital until the extra covers I ordered arrive and I'll be using cloth full time, but bubs bottom is really red where we've been wiping most so right on his bottom where the poop comes out and the little bit between his bottom and his doodle :( dh thinks it could be because we have been using wipes and then patting dry with a tissue and perhaps the tissue is irritating. I thought it might be the huggies wipes? Anyway we've been putting the zinc sudocrem on for the last day and it doesn't seem to be doing anything, can anyone recommend anything else? I've also been using spossies all day today as I'm under the belief that you can't use barrier creams with cloth, is that also correct when using a microfleece liner? Are there any products that are ok to use again microfleece?

If you are using liners, you can use sudocream.

I use moogoo though unless the rash is really bad.

And it could be the huggies wipes, they have lots of nasty chemicals in them. If I use huggies wipes on the kids, they rash up straight away - even DS.

Get yourself some MooGoo MSN cream its great and its safe to use with the MCNs. Also I would stop using bum wipes and just use a warm facewasher instead, some wipes have all sorts of guff in them so you will want avoid guff that might cause stinging.

Definitely the wipes I reckon, my DD started to cry when she was old enough with disposable wipes, I use gorgeous velour flannels and they're great at picking up the poo, you only ever need one, i got them fron bonnibuns
in the meantime we go for a night in disposies and slather on daktozin and vwala!

the wipes i find the easiest way to get rid of it is nappy free time and u can use creams if u have liners :)

I'd get some cloth wipes and just use water. You can make your own very easily.
It's not that unusual to react to the chemicals in the disposable nappies, also, so once you switch over that may also help.

On the wipes I bought a couple of 10 pack face washers that I use for wipes. I also made my own but find that the face washers are fine, I keep a Pump bottle in there as well with a tiny bit of Gaia bath wash in it and water.

Actually if you wanted wipes try the Gaia ones they are quite nice DD always reacts to something in the wip-es but doesn't with these or Eco Nature ones!!

I swapped recenly to the Gaia wipes after DD had terible nappy rash andshe does not even wince when I wipe her with them. The other day we were out and I didnt realise I hadnt put any gaia ones in the nappy bag ans sge cried wgen u wiped her bottom.

The gaia ones are also made from bamboo I think and are softer.

I am going through a similar thing at the moment. We also use facewashers instead of wipes (I keep a sample pack of wipes in the nappy bag in case we get stuck somewhere without water) - it's not a problem to wash them when you're already washing nappies.

On the creams: I use MooGoo (I use the eczema/psoriasis balm bc it is milk free and DS has a dairy allergy) most of the time. I use Daktozin when he has had thrush, and I use hydrozole when it's just a normal nappy rash that has gotten very sore-looking. Hydrozole is VERY effective but as it's a steroid cream, I don't like to use it if I don't have to.

We use microfleece liners, and I'm actually beginning to wonder if they are causing some of the problems (due to being synthetic). But they do keep him nice and dry. How do other people go with liners?

the other thing we did when DD had SHOCKING nappy rash was stop all creams (under doctors orders) and give DD a salt water wash 4 or 5 times a day.
1 TEASPOON of salt to 600mL of water.

Then make sure you just pat the area dry not wipe.
It was amazing the difference this made.

How much time does he get with is nappy off? not sure if you mentioned that, Harper is being fidgety and farty atm, so my readingand typing are a bit shonky :)
I cant offer any advice, Harper has been really good and never had it actually!! Bless!! My CHN did suggest sudocream and talcum powder to keep things cool and fresh but not too moist. Perhaps try not using the tissue and just letting the air dry him after a wipe. If there is no relief seen quick then I would immediatly change and try some new wipes.

Whatever you do, I hope it works quickly for him. There's nothing worse than feeling sorry for your bubby :(

ditto the comments re having no nappy time :)

we also sometimes slather on some sorbalene, which we find helps the dryness ...

and sudocrem followed by a bit of talc on sore looking spots, when they come :)

we find the above are fine, on our cloth bummed boy!

another thing we do is to double up his overnight nappy, to try to absorb as much as possible :)

Thanks for all the replies girls. We've started doing no nappy time a few days ago and today we had a bath together and then gave him a massage and some tummy time and I reckon he had his nappy off for about an hour so I hope that helps. His bottom is still pretty red. I've tried Bepanthen as we had a sample tube from the hospital and I think I like that better than the sudocream.

Q where do you get moogoo? I've seen it online but can you get it in a pharmacy? and would I get the Eczema & Psoriasis Balm or the MSN one for nappy rash? or is one better for an every day cream to use at each nappy change and the other for when there's actually a rash there?

I'm also confused about when to use powder :rolleyes: I know, I know, what a looney! I mean I've put it on after baths and at some nappy changes but can you put powder on 1st and then the creams?

I have the eczema moogoo and the msm one, i use the eczema one when its looking really nasty and a bit fungal like, msm cream the rest of the time. You can get it at pharmacies and heath food shops, just check out moogoo's website for list of stockists. Oh hang on, your on the sunny coast, the mrs flannerys (or something like that) health food shop opposite the plaza in maroochydore is where I got mine from.

As for powder, um we don't use it? Its not good to use powder with girls, so I don't use it. And never really had to bother with ds. But on the rare occasions that I have used corn flour on DD2's bottom, I put the sudocream on and then the flour.

YAY Arimeh's Eden I didn't think to check the stockists :doh: our local health food store has one of each in stock and have put it under the counter for me, hopefully they will do the trick :pray:

Powder.... use cornflour, not talc. You can buy the J & Js stuff, or you can just use regular kitchen cornstarch in a salt shaker. Put it on after you've wiped, it will soak up any of the excess moisture left behind, and not allow nasties to grow. Then you pop the cream on.

Lots and lots of nudie baby time. B got really bad nappy rash when I was in the hospital because he was in sposies the whole time. When I got home I had him completely diaper free almost all the time. I only put a diaper on him when we went out. Had him on a towel when on the floor, or wrapped in a towel when I was holding him so he wouldn't wee or poo on me. It cleared up in just over a day.

I have to agree the moogoo rocks. We are bathing DS with the goat milk bar and that alone has improved his nappy rash vi started using the MSM cream on his bot tonight too

The scalp cream is the boom for cradle cap and general dry facial skin

powder before or after are for different things.

before, it absorbs any liquid still on bubba's punanny.

after, it helps the cream to stay put, instead of rubbing all over the nappy/towell/whatever bubba's on.

we pat dry thoroughly and then just do the cream and the powder, when he's got rash.

but there's no reason not to do a light powder before and after, if you're concerned.

I love love love Lucas papaw ointment. I use it as a lip balm, nappy rash cream, and on sunburn.

DS had a shocking nappy rash about a month ago just a bit longer then that and i tried everything. i used bepanthen, curash powder, nappy free time, moo goo, sudocream and couldnt get rid of it. i ended up washing all of my cloth nappies in dettol laundry liquid and putting him is sposies and used a fantastic cream that the womens and childrens make here in adelaide. it cleared it up within a couple of days and hasnt had a rash since. u can buy it from any united discount pharmacy store and if you google it, i think amcal online sells it. i tried everything with no success until this cream. i highly recommend it. good luck :D

DS had this same problem. It ended up being the wipes and I don't use them anymore. I just use flannels with water.
Also Moogoo is AMAZING for nappy rash. We used it to clear up a nasty bout and now after every bath we put a bit on the area's he's prone to (the area's you mentioed and also in the little fat rolls) and he hasn't had nappyrash since.

PMH (childrens hossy here in perth) makes a fantastic cream called nappy mate its the only thing thats worked for my DD maybe have a look in the chemist for it

thanks so much for all the replies girls. I think the moogoo has been working well. I'd say the rash is 3/4 gone and it feels so much softer now too. Hopefully it will clear up 100% by tomorrow if not I might get something a bit stronger from the pharmacy.

Ditto for Nappy Mate...only thing that worked for Palmer. It's awesome.

Until she somehow accessed the jar, unscrewed the lid, spread it all over herself (totally emptying the jar), then screwed the lid back on and put it back on the shelf so everything looked normal...

I also agree with Nappymate. Started using with my now 8yo son and always been the best. It is also the best for covering tonka trucks, fingerpainting and lipstick....although you would have to ask my kids as to why!!! lol

I was wondering that too Loula, I asked Dr. Google and it looks like it's a pharmacy product. You can order it on line, it's about $6.40 I am going to check in the local pharmacy 1st.
