Im still a week away from my EDD, but when asking the mw today if she thought I would go early or late, given that DD was a bit early and I've been getting lots of 'signs', she quickly mentioned that there is no way of telling, but it is a 'good sized baby'
I didn't think to ask at the time, but does anyone know if the size of the baby has any relevance to how early/late it might be?
In my experience, babies get bigger the later they are. Doesn't mean they're gonna come out whoppers, but mine were;
DS1 - 7 days late, 9lb 7oz
DD1 - 7 days early 7lb9oz
DS2 - 5 days early 7lb 10oz
DD2 - Born on due date 8lb 13oz
I don't know if a 'good sized' baby would be the cause of it being late? But maybe the extra growing time could contribute.
For the record, mine were -
on time (but really late, they got my dates wrong ;)) - 8lb10
11 days late - 9lb13
10 days late - 8lb13
10 days late - 10lb8
I have never heard of it being related before... interesting question.
My theory is that big babies come early, as i think i read something about how one of the things that triggers labour is the baby reaching the right size for your uterus. It could be something that i just made up though...
I thought DS was going to be really really early as he was just so huge, but he decided he liked it in there and waited until 1 day before his due date.
Mine were all late & just get bigger. My longest was 12 days over but she was my 3rd biggest. My biggest was 7 days over.
I dunno about that becuase wouldn't we all havebabies that are the same size kwim?:
I guess on average the longer your gestation the larger the baby is likely to be. If they come early, they aren't likely to be so big, right?

My DD was 5 days early and 8lbs 3oz
My DS was one week over and 10lbs 11oz
Who knows really??
DS1 - 11 days over 7lb14oz (summer bub)
DS2 - 10 days over 9lb6.5oz (winter bub)
maybe it depends on the season? DS two got christmas AND easter to fatten up :lol:
36 weeks 6 days 9lbs 11ozs........so I don't know that a big baby will go over...i think when they are ready they are ready i dont think inividual size has that much to do with it.

My DD was 10 days early and at 6lb 8oz, I don't think she was that big for an early baby!! Sorry to destroy your theory hon! Both my sisters boys were the same - roughly 2 weeks early and ony 6ish lbs
PS: I was on time and bang on 9lb. Big baby? I guess! But I wasn't late, I was just the size I was at that particular time, IYKWIM. I think it is kind of obvious though - the longer babies bake, the bigger they'll be but some babies are just destined to be little so just because you go over your due date doesn't mean you'll deliver a whopper
I'd be more tempted to correlate head circumference and length as opposed to weight ... Pip was 8 days over and 8lb 4oz
DD was 11 days late and 7p 9o or 3445g, 52cm head circ 36cm :)
My whopper came early :) Well, she's a would-be whopper had she gone full term LOL. My theory (for me) is as soon as my bubs engage I go into labour, since neither of them were ever recorded as being engaged before labour started.
I don't think appletree was saying that every early baby is big... just that if a baby IS big, it might be a reason for that baby to come earlier. :shrug:
Thanks guys. Seems like late babies can be bigger, but being big doesn't mean coming later.
Just have to wait & see when the baby wants to come out.

I think it might be the other way around... The longer they are in the longer they have to grow & are therefore bigger ;)
Both my girls were early and were tiny, ds almost came early and was small at that stage but he baked away for 5 and a half weeks and became a whopper.
Don't think the size of bubs has anything to do with coming late or early for that matter ...as we all know they will only come when they are ready!
I have three children the first was 15 days late - 7lb 2oz
second was 1 day early - 8lb 2oz
third was 9 days late - 9lb 14oz
But going on the theory that your body grows babies the size you can birth (or however the saying goes) then if your baby reaches that size early then your body might evict them early. Not always up to the baby when it's born haha. Maybe 8lb is my uterus' limit. I doubt DD chose her birthday, cos she wasn't ready.
all of mine have been naturally early but not so big.... 3.6kgs was the biggest. I am 6'2'' so plenty of room to grow a BIG baby!
Wow Liz, I just looked at your sig - she was a big girl!
Our boy was 4.02kgs and came two weeks early. When he arrived the paediatrician asked how overdue he was because he was showing all of the overdue signs! My OB still maintains that an increased size does not mean they will come early.
I personally don't think it makes much difference, they are going to come whether you or they are ready. Tristan was born 34+3wks and was bigger than a lot of my friends term babies... 3.09kg (6lb 13oz) 50cms and HC of 33cm.
Up to your genes I think.
Mine were 3.3kg 37 weeks 33cm head
3.5kg 41 weeks 35cm head
3.5kg 40+4 35cm head
First one has a different father - his sister had two early babies by about the same margin. The other two, *his* sister had a late and on time baby lol
