hip dysplasia
How do you know if your baby has this?
I'm just curious, was reading something on it the other day. DD gets a sore leg and I am wondering if it's related.
How early/ late could this be diagnosed? HOW do they diagnose it? Could it have been missed at the checks at the Drs?
Just curious.
Thanks everyone.

I'm no expert but the MACH nurse picked DD's up at the 4 week check by noticing her leg creases weren't even on the front or back, she noted it in her blue book and the GP checked it at the 6 weeks check and sent her for a scan which picked it up for certain. I have a friend who is a Paed and she felt DD's hips the other day and couldn't tell from feel so I'm very grateful it was picked up the way it was. If you are concerned perhaps mention it to your GP or MACH nurse next visit?

Thanks Dusty, was hoping you'd stop by as I was reading your post the other day!
I've got an appointment at the Dr next week anyway so will mention it then, thanks!

DD was born with a clicky hip and we were sent for a paed follow up at 6 weeks. He couldn't feel anything, the MCHN couldn't feel anything - both said her hips felt really solid, but sent us for an ultrasound just in case and they were dislocated. An ultrasound is the best way to make sure that nothing is amiss. :crossfingers:

Was your little one in pain PacRakMG? DD has a really sore leg sometimes, and the Dr has just said to keep an eye on it.

My daughter has HD it was diagnosed at 6 weeks old we went foe numerous ultrasounds and by the time we went for our follow up we were told it was too late for a brace now when she's a bit older actually that times coming up soon she may need surgery.
Please address it asap because I didn't push the hospital my daughter now has a twisted tail bone which causes her neck and back to continuously pop out she is in constant pain so if you suspect it please get it looked at sooner rather than later

She didn't give any indication that she was in pain and would kick her legs around no worries - but she was only seven weeks when she was properly diagnosed. The best advice I can give you is to get the ultrasound. The younger they are treated, the better it is for everyone concerned.

Hi Sue
Dd1 was diagnosed at birth, she was in backward cloth nappies for three weeks and her right one resolved itself. At her 8 week checkup with her pead she had an ultrasound and was in a brace for 10 months for her left hip. She wasn't showing any sign of pain.
Hope you get some answers soon.

Just wanted to say thanks guys, we are seeing the Dr early next week so will get her to check it out properly!

Good luck sue, yes it can be missed, my DD wasn't picked up till her 6 month check. It can also be fine at birth and then happen further down the track which is what our ortho thinks happened with DD.
Check her thighs, are the creases symmetrical? Is one leg longer than the other? When you lie her on her back bend her knees and place her feet on the ground, are the knees level? When you lie her on her back, put both feet together in front of her face and play peek a boo by pulling them apart to each side, does one leg go further down and the other stop part way?
There isnt usually pain associated with hip dysplasia, even where the hips are dislocated. But, ddh is most prevalent in first born girls and its more common that the left hip is the problem than the right. Family history is often a big indicator, so maybe just check with your mum and mil if any babies had double nappies recommended, or had 'clicky hips' when they were little (nobody seems to know what you are talking about when you just ask about hip dysplasia). They don't do this anymore btw, as though it immobilizes the hip so the socket can grow it puts the hip in an extended position which does not work as well as a harness or brace.
Good luck with the drs appointment, they should try and do a manipulation of the hips and listen for a click or a thunk, and if they hear something or are being very thorough will send you for an ultrasound. After 6mths old though an ultrasound is ineffective and they will get you to have an x-ray instead.

Thanks guys! I'll let you know how we go!

How did you go with the dr sue?
-
Hmmm, she said she doesn't "think" she has it. I'm so annoyed with myself, we go home to the UK tomorrow so can't really follow this up with another Dr at such sort notice.
My chiro also said she doesn't think she has it. She also did the tests on her - moving her legs around etc.
I guess I'll see how we go. Might take her to my family Dr back in the UK :) Haven't seen him for YEARS! Hehe.
Thanks for asking appletree, I'll keep you posted xxxxx
-
Did they do an ultrasound though? Its the easiest way to confirm it for certain, maybe see if your dr in the uk can order one for you.
-
BR, they didn't do an ultra sound and she said that because she felt certain that it was ok, that DD wouldn't need one.
It kind of bothered me. I'm going to push it when I get back I think.

Sue - it's so worth getting an xray - appletree is right, they prefer to do x rays on bubs over 6 months. Both my paed and MCHN did all the tests, pulled on her legs, measured the lenghts, etc and said it was fine, there were no signs at all. But the paed sent us for an ultrasound because he was thorough and both of DD's hips were dislocated, one was pretty much non existant. There are stories online of kids with hip dysplaysia and their journey begins with the GP saying there is nothing wrong, parent is being panicky about nothing and then twelve months later it is an enormous problem. Sorry if this makes you worry, but its better to have them checked sooner rather than have all of this going on when they are trying to walk. Hope you have a nice trip, maybe your UK doctor will have some advice.

PacRakMG, thanks so much, I'm definitely going to get a second opinion on this when I get back from the UK.
I am going to trust my instincts on this one!
Thanks again

Good on you, at least you will know for sure.
Ps welcome back mammasue!

That's great, especially for your piece of mind.

Ok ladies, tell me what you think of this:
We went for an ultra sound - and all looked fine *phew*
HOWEVER. The sonographer told me that basically because she is over 6 months that the u/s is no longer an accurate way of determining hip dysplasia. She told me that the Dr would only have sent me for an x-ray if she thought that there was a "real clinical need". Now, HOW ON EARTH could my GP have made the assumption that there was NO real clinical need when she didn't even lay hands on my DD. She didn't and hasn't ever done the basic tests herself - she is just going by what I'm saying.
The sonographer made me feel like I was sent for the ultra sound to pacify me. That I am an over protective mother just looking for issues. She told me that if the GP thought there was really a problem, she'd have sent us for an x-ray.
WTF?
What would you do now?
I'm fairly happy that the u/s showed nothing and the sonographer was really nice and said that in her experience (of 20 years) that she can usually see when there are problems. I'm happy that her hips are ok. But my GP?????? GRRRR! I am seriously considering seeing another GP. She's a bit hopeless in my opinion. (example, I went to her when DD was 3 weeks old with HORRENDOUS holes in my nipples from breast feeding and she told me to put cabbage leaves on them and stop b/f :o )

It sounds like your gp doesn't have a clue, get an appointment with your health nurse, they can check the basics eg clicks when moving the hips, different leg lengths and the skin folds on her bottom not matching. If she shows any of these signs then I would be demanding an x ray instead.

Grrrr to horrid GPs.
