BFing and dummies when did u introduce one?

just a question for Bfers who introduced a dummy when did u do it and did it work out well

With DD1 she had one pretty much straight away (day 3 I think), DD2 would never take one, DD3 from about 2 weeks. I've b/f all of my babies and they've never had confusion. I would be lost with the dummy personally.

same as jodi about day 3 with both of them and failed at bf'ing both of them apparently due to confusion but i dont actually believe it was that .. sorry i cant be of any real help

We used one briefly from around 5-6 weeks. We only used it a bit then he decided he didn't want it any more.
It's generally recommended you wait a bit to get breastfeeding well established before introducing a different nipple. Some babies are fine with it, some aren't - unfortunately you don't know till afterwards.

I didn't want to use a dummy, but after 3 days of 3 hours sleep TOTAL, dh stuck one in his mouth.

I gave in to one around 3-4weeks when bub was comfort sucking and was on the boob 90% of the day. We haven't had any problems and he rarely takes the dummy. He will spit it out if you try and give it to him when he's hungry.

Day 2 I think it was here for DD2, no sleep for 2 days because she wanted to constantly suck made my mind up for me. She breastfeeds fine. I think it was day 3 for DD1 and she was fine as well.

Hmmm, I think DD was about 10 days old, maybe less. No dramas at all. We gave her bottles from 3 weeks of age too. She stopped breastfeeding 13 days short of her first birthday. No nipple confusion in our house :)

The staff in nicu gave DS a dummy. It didn't worry me and while he's been using it he doesn't really like it but it helps give me a break at times when he is just playing and helps dh use it to settle if I'm not around. No confusion here

I can't remember exactly, but we were still in hospital (maybe day 4). DS was also comp fed for about 10 days due to low blood sugar levels. No confusion here, when we tried to reintroduce EBM bottles, around 5 months, DS wouldn't take them...BB's only for my boy by then ;)
He still has his dummy now and it's a life saver sometimes!

Within the first couple of days. I can't remember why exactly but we never had any issues with nipple confusion.

Within the first few days with all 3, no confusion here either DD2 and DS self weaned at 13 and 14 months respectively.

I gave DD a dummy i think day 5. but it was only because DP took her down the shop without me. she has only had it once or twice since.. She prefers booby over dummy though

With DS2 the midwife asked me if I wanted to try one on his first night as he had worked himself up and was over tired. Took it no problems and spat it at about 4mths. He was breastfed till 10 mths so no confusion for him.
One gave milk, one didnt, no problem :lol:

With DD I took one in my hospital bag with me and used it the first night. She wasnt really fussed with the whole idea of a dummy though so we flagged it about a week later.
Again no confusion though as others have said it will get spat if they are hungry.

If you are worried about the whole confusion thing just try offering the dummy after you know she has been fed but just wanting the comfort.

DD1 we tried in SCBU to see if it would her her suck reflex, didn't work, then again at 9 weeks different dummy, she was a poor feeder before the dummy, but didn't have nipple confusion.

DD2 only just "getting it" at a month old, but if she is hungry don't bother with it, she knows what's boob and what isn't no tricking her!

Tried to give my daughter one at about 3 mo - she didn't want it ad I anything it seemed to keep her pepped up and/or hungry After a sleepless week I reintroduced it at about 5 months and she's had it for sleeps since then. We're still breastfeeding once a day so hasn't affected breastfeeding at all!

We tried it at 2 weeks, but DD wouldn't have a bar of it, we tried 3 different kinds and every few weeks when she screams and I don't know what to do I try it again with her, but she still refuses. She wont take a bottle either. Boobies only for her too!

ok well she was fully sucking for comfort and making herself windy so she has one and since shes been feeding great and a lot more settled :) thanx heaps

DD1 had one til 6 months, but was FF from 6 weeks. Dummy made no difference to us.
DD2 refused from the start, even though she had colic & needed it!
DS had one from a few days til 4 months. He was BF til 23 months, so it caused no issues for us.
I've given DD3 one on occasion, but she's not too interested in it. Hasn't really needed it.

DS had a dummy from day 2. He was a big baby 4.9kg at birth. and had trouble breast feeding from the start. I dont believe having a dummy made the trouble better or worse. Sorry I cant help any more than that.

From birth - NICU gave one to him (with our consent) and it's been a great soother ever since.

As for whether it affected bfing, I can only say that we had a LOT of bfing support in the early days and we didn't have any issues with nipple confusion. DS now chooses the dummy or the boob according to whether he wants soothing or feeding.

i think around 6 weeks she first took a dummy, and then she just gave it up around 4.5 months. I try sticking it back in her mouth again but she just spits it at me.

The reason i waited for a few weeks was not so much nipple confusion for bub, but i wanted my boobs to be regulated by bub to make sure they made enough milk.

My little one had colic, and the dummy definitely helped with that.

Had problems breastfeeding, struggled until 3 weeks. Gave up. Introduced dummy at around 6 weeks because DD wouldn't settle despite using all the tricks in my trick bag. Restarted breastfeeding/relactating at nine weeks. She doesn't appeared to be too confused by anything that goes in her mouth - boob, bottle, dummy, supply line ... she works it all out.

Day 3. A nurse jammed one in his mouth against my better judgement. Then another told me off for letting him have one! After that not until after 2 weeks old and then only if all other options were exhausted. He stopped taking it pretty quick tho and decided I was a better dummy but the ones we have left over he likes to chew on :)
