Ok, quick but maybe strange question. DH and I are trying to work out what to call our girls' girly bits. Willy works for boy bits, it is non offensive etc, but we can't work out what works for girls. Any suggestions?

Fanny?
we use the proper names, penis and vagina, but growing up i had to call vaginas fanny's
Lol we use fanny too. That's what I've always used since I was a little kid. We use willy for boy bits too, and sometimes doodle but that just makes me laugh
We used Tiddle when I was a kid!! Haha! My daughter calls it a Pinny! When she got older we started using the proper terms but as a toddler she used the nickname.
Foofie  shortened to foof!!! Actually it's funny we mainly say gina for Iz and she says it too but we call J's a pee pee. She knows it's called a penis though and told DH the other day that she was a boy now and had a penis:o
It's a fanny in our house for DD and a tonky for DS. They do know that the correct terms are vagina and penis, though.
we had the same issue in our house, i couldn't come up with anything that DP agreed with so DD1 now calls it her bitties. She calls boys parts bits or a loodle but girls parts are always bitties
Giny
Willy
My friend teaches her girls 'Mippy', I find that gives me shivers,
Don't know! We just go with penis and vagina.
DH does say bits sometimes, as a generic term for genitalia, and DS translated that into bits and pieces. Not so keen on that.
DS knows penis and vagina, and you say anything different and he'll go off at you and correct you :) lol
When we were little, boys had a doodle and girls had a rude-y
I personally can't stand the word fanny...not sure why just find it revolting lol. I like vjayjay and while I kinda don't like the word vagina I still use it. We've taught ds1 Penis and he also knows Vagina. A few weeks ago we were sitting in the cinemas waiting for the credits to start and very loudly ds1 announces "Girls have Vagina's and boys have penis" luckily it was despicable me so pretty much all parents with their kids haha. ds2 we havent taught yet but I think its important for kids to know the proper names so they can better identify if anything was to happen and also I just feels it kinda gives it a bit more authority using the grown up words, kinda like you are teaching them, this is something private etc etc
Unfortunately it's best to use the correct terms if anything was to happen, it isn't dismissal in court.
As an example 'flower' could be dismissed.
we use the words vagina and penis, I read something once that children who know the proper anatomical names for their genitals are less likely to be abused, and more likely to speak out if they are abused. Made sense to me anyway.
Penis and Vagina here too.
We'll be using the correct terms too, nicknames freak me out a tad, and as PP have mentioned, children are less likely to be molested, or have it go unnoticed, if they use the correct terms. "Don't touch my wee wee" may entice predators, but, "Don't touch my vagina" is a lot more forceful, kwim?
Thanks so much for the replies, I think we will go with penis and vagina xxx
It's because they're less likely to feel ashamed about talking about it. If mum and dad can't talk about genitalia using proper terminology, how can they? So the affected kids take longer to figure out how to say something.
And as CBG says, it stands up in court if the awful does happen.
Definitely recommend using penis and vagina.
We use penis and vagina here too.
Daddy has a penis and mummy had a vagina (gina) but for some reason DD wont call hers a gina and insists its a moomoo! and little boys have doodles....thats really something she has decided on. she laughs if i call hers a gina or mine a moomoo. :)
we were in the shops the other day and we saw a lady with a baby girl...DD asked the lady if her baby had a moomoo or a doodle! but she has no problem in asking friends that come over for a swim if they have a vagina or a penis...luckily the only people that come over are not easily offended! :)
Well, I use penis and vagina too, but I was talking with my dad the other day, and he was laughing with my grandma about what she used to call his. Shes a real "proper" lady iykwim? She called it a 'wetting pole' .. we laughed for ages .. haha .. I love my grandma :)
oh, and i was changing my daughters nappy the other day ad he pointed to her vagina and called it a bum .. hehe
We just had a discussion about this in our buddies group. I am a bit hesitant to use Vagina because it sounds so grown up for little kids, but that is my hang up not theirs and if i were to use it they wouldn't think anything of it. We use doodle for penis. So I am going for it, it will be Vagina around here.
I wouldn't entirely agree about using the correct names preventing abuse. I certainly knew what things were called and it made no difference.
My DD (just over 2.5) decided by herself that "daddy has a boy, mummy has a girl and boobies, and DD has a girl"
We use the correct terms for them, and at the moment DS is obsessed. He gave his creche class an anotomy lesson using a doll and also tells everyone "My mum's babies are going to come out of her VA-GINA'. God love him :D
We used Diddle for vagina and doodle for penis when I was really little. We use penis and vagina here siomply because that is what they are. They are not rude words and I see no reason not to use them.
For what it is worth, my parents were never embarrassed about discussing sex etc, I was not ashamed of my genitals, and I was definitely not still using the terms diddle and doodle past the age of about 5, but it didn't make it any easier to speak out. And from my experience with the people involved with child services, I could have called my bits whatever I liked in my statement and it still would have counted.
My mother decided to use the "proper" words when we were kids, but she had never heard anyone say vagina aloud, so she mispronounced it. Boy, was I laughed at when I mispronounced it as va-geen-a during science class. (Our history teacher's first name was Regina, which somehow made it all seem so much worse.) Now I hesitate to say the word because I have to think about how to pronounce it.
We're calling it a wu-wu for now. I have no idea how that word popped out but I feel far less embarrassed talking about a wu-wu in public. The nickname in Vietnamese is "little bird" and that's what DP calls it when he's speaking Vietnamese to DD. I think we'll just use nicknames for now but use the proper words when she's a bit older.
DD1 is call her vagina a "moomoo" no idea where she picked it up but we just let her use it, it wasnt until she was assaulted at school by an older boy and had to be interviewed by the police and might still have to go to court we realised the seriousness of knowing the proper terms so from now on we will only use penis and vagina
We use penis and vagina here too. I don't see any reason not to use the correct names. There is nothing rude about them at all.
WE will be using the correct terms as well
DF always calls a Vagina a Gina, as he hates the word Vagina he says its to clinical lol..But i think they should know the correct terms
When i was little it was called a rude-e and a flossy :) hehe or doodle for the boys
It's penis and vagina in this house.
Or private parts to describe the whole area.
Sorry but for safety reasons...
It's Vagina and Penis.
They are body parts, nothing to be ashamed of. Teaching children made up names only promotes their own (and yours) embarressment over their body parts. There is also evidence to suggest using baby terms gives potential sexual predators power over their victim. There have been many threads regarding this topic posted here... I'm sure if you searched you'd find some.
Fanny, vagina, penis, and (thanks DH) d!ck lol
Most often though, Charlotte calls it her fanny, I think it is easier for her to say, but she knows both words and will use both.
We use Vagina here..
Some family were horrifed we taught her that, but IDC. She is very proud that she has a Vagina and will tell me all about it everytime shes nude lol.
We use penis for penis and fanny for vagina.
We use "pee pee" and "gina" though DS calls it a "gine"
We use doodle and hubs taught my son bajingo for vagina ( all scrubs fans will know that one).
We are NOT embarrassed of our genitals, I don't remember ever feeling like it was a taboo subject just because we didn't use the correct terminology, I never found a problem with not speaking the correct terms when growing up ( I knew what was what and where everything went and what it all did). You use what you and your family are comfortable with. :)
I couldn't agree more. It was always fanny and doodle in our house when I was a child but we definitely knew the correct names and used them when required. My parents weren't embarrassed, nor were us kids, its just that more relaxed names suited our family, IYKWIM
We'll be teaching our children the correct names but will use more light-hearted names around home such a willy and ginny (or vjay-jay).
It's a personal thing, each to their own.
When I was 13 we were visiting another family (who were Canadian) & I was with the 5 year old in her room. She said "I hurt my little beaver" - I had no idea what she was talking about till she pulled her pants down to show me! If she'd said I hurt my vagina or privates, I would have said well tell your Mum or that's a private area. If you use the real term everyone knows what you're talking about.
To me fanny is confusing because the American definition is bottom. When Marge Simpson said something about her fanny pack I was like :o
Vagina & penis here as well. Juliette can't quite get the word out yet, so she says "giva" (pronounced like the second part of vagina) but when she says it we repeat, vagina so she learns to say it properly.
We'll be using penis and vagina here. When I was little we said penis and vulva. Lord knows why my parents decided "vulva" was better than "vagina" - none of my classmates knew what a vulva was, although it was anatomically correct as far as what I was referring to. At some point we started saying vagina when we were older. My MCHN referred to DS's penis as a "wee-wee" which I found unprofessional and irritating.
On the issue of abuse - I've read a few police interviews with alleged victims of abuse. When they refer to their genitals with ambiguous names ("flower," "lily," etc) the police have to try and get them to explain what they mean. Unfortunately, a three year-old won't understand the importance of using the "correct" language and also won't understand why they're being questioned about their private parts - which in itself can increase the trauma. The defence lawyers will have a field day with the interview once it gets to court because there's no proof that "lilly" means vagina, thus risking the abuse allegation and the charges to a "not guilty" verdict.
Vulva is probably more technically correct, being the outside part. Either way is pretty unambiguous in an abuse context, though.
