Resume Help! PLEASE!
Ok,
I'm applying for a job at work. It requires you to be an RN (check!) but is not a normal nursing role. It is more educating others about a particular thing and managing related issues. So... what do I include in my resume? If I was applying for any other clinical role, I'd include all the relevant clinical skills... none of which are relevant to this role as it isn't "clinical". HELP!
TIA
MG

It sounds like you want to focus on your communication skills, maybe organisation abilities, problem solving.
Do you have a position description?
-
Um.... hummmm .... well...
If I was applying for the job......;) i would focus on, any training/educating that you had done, do you have ANY experience in a similar role - say at ward level?
What are the other relevant skills that you possess? do you need to have done something similar? Do you have any OHS experience at all? I would also suggest that as you are required to be a nurse for the position, nursing skills and qualifications would be relevant too - otherwise why would they want a nurse?
Have you had to manage staff, a difficult situation, done any preceptoring?
have a read of the PD
HTH :p
-
Highlight any training you've done of new staff, familiarisation etc. Any interests you have in training / coaching - even if its outside the hospital (eg as a volunteer somewhere). Mention any mentoring that you do ANYWHERE!
Good luck!
-
you're cheeky SJ! I do have experience at ward level. I think I've already put that in. I know nursing skills are relevant but should I really have "maintain an unconscious airway" in it?
-
WHAT..... Me cheeky... bah hahahahah
No, maintain an unconscious airway would not really be relevant - but any training that you have attended (other than ward stuff) will demonstrate that you actively seek out learning opportunities IYKWIM
What did you do before where you are now?
Try and focus on what things you have done, rather than just skills.
-
Nah, but you can refer to your skills in that area more broadly and how that will help in this position.
Working as a .... for .... years i have developed an awareness of the practicalities of working in the hospital environment....
-
What about how you mentored that trainee a few months back? I know that turned out pear shaped for reasons out of your control, but you certainly made yourself available to her, helped her along the way.....do you have any other examples of mentoring?
-
the Grad's congregate towards me... does that count? Pity I can't use FCS Lees!
SJ - I've included some of the things I did in the AOD Clinic. Problem is, I did Grad year then moved to where I am now. I did OH&S there in 2004.
OH! Do I put the changes I've made in the unit (relevant to this role) in it somewhere? Or leave that for if I get an interview?
-
Dot point them and then you can expand in the interview!
-
If its anything like going for a job in my workplace we've gotta sell ourselves on paper before we even get a chance at an interview - so I would say include the changes you've made in the unit - which would help demonstrate your communication skills, problem solving methodolgies etc.
-
Hmmmm thanks Leesa. Good point. P.S. Im not doing any FCS stuff tonight! They're gunna have to survive without me!.... unless you want to log in and fight with gmail ;) *ducks and runs*
-
Lol, its got me absolutely stuffed - I cannot login. I'm thinking I may have to create one for myself and start getting everyone to cc me in the emails??? (Sorry to hijack your thread hun!)..
-
not at all. give it another 24 hrs before you create another account. we'll brain storm that tomorrow. tonight I need to focus on this job application. *has thinking hat on wondering just how much too include*
-
Your demonstration of skills does not have to be confined to current workplace and/or role. You have heaps of previous experience, eg firefighting, to provide evidence of teamwork, communication skills, safety first approach etc.
And as said previously, the written application is to provide enough evidence for the panel to say "yes she has the skills and it shows but I want to learn more at interview".
-
MG - make sure you put in that you have expert experience with the subject matter and all your relevant teaching/mentoring experience (including med students/reg's etc). Any communication skills courses/inservices or some CPD that could be considered relevant to proving you have extra experience to support/facilitate others in their learning. I like to make sure I have convered all the KPI's in the job description, write in firm language - so that you demonstrate all skills etc and like to put a bit about how my personal goals etc measure to that of the department/hospital etc. Kind of like a personal misson and vision statement.
Good Luck - I am sure you will impress them! xx
-
How am I going to get all that across in a 1 page cover letter?! Or am I suppose to get that into my CV?
Ce - can I use CFA? That was *calculates in head* nearly 4 years ago... and no references from there. I went on Mat leave from CFA in Nov 2006 and resigned in June or July 2007.
-
Bit of both!! KPI's etc in CV but clearly address your suitability for the role in the letter! Any experience that is relevant put on but make sure you don't overlook any mentoring/training/relevant stuff in your current role that is applicable. Generally my experience is people often assume that the interviewers etc 'know' they have experience and can do the appropriate tasks etc but you have to state it! Start by drafting your letter and CV then really be harsh and rework etc - may take some time but it will help you with the interview prep too!
-
I think I'm up to about the 6th version of my letter and CV Mak! This is proving hard! I haven't had to apply for a job for about 3 or 4 years! Thanks for your advice!
-
WOOHOO! Got an interview! Now to land the job!
-
-
Awesome!!! Well done!!! xx
-
Good luck MG, dont think that i am on the interview panel as it stands at the moment, so one less thing to stress about.
Make sure you know about Risk assessments and OHS as you will be asked.
Read your TTT manual.
I have no idea what the questions will be, but this is the stuff that its usually based around
Goodluck xx
-
Thanks SJ!!!!
Strangely, wasn't stressing about you being on the panel!
Have been reading about OHS and risk assessments. And the manual. Feel like my head is spinning! I am so nervous! So if you see me in the corridor puking my guts up... I'm not PG!
How are you? I hope you had an ok weekend

I thought I'd come back and update you all.
In the interview I was told I'd hear back by the 20th of December (yesterday). I got the phone call as I was driving home from work (so around 1545). Whilst I didn't get THE job I applied for, I was offered the counterpart role (the role is job shared so I'm still doing the same job just less days which is fine). Although the conversation went very weird after discussing my leave that I already have booked for the month the other lady is due to have her baby) and after wards I was very confused as to whether or not I DO have the job! The lady was going to call me back today (hence why I'm not sure what's happening) but haven't heard from her and not been able to contact her.
So, I *think* I have the job? But I'm not celebrating just yet!
-
I haven't heard anything, but i doubt that the offer would be retracted. It was a very close call between the two of you as to who would take my job.
When is your leave.
Yay yay yay yay - i wanted to say something yesterday when you were emailing me as i already knew then :)
-
Haha, that's what I told DH when he was yelling at me last night!
you don't need to tell me specifics BTW! ;) I'm not fishing! The only thing I catch when I fish is a cold... I was going to message you after the phone call but I am putting any big announcements or celebrations on ice until C calls me back. Hopefully I'll be able to catch her tomorrow to confirm what's happening and to ask some of the questions I have.
my leave is in early May (I think). It's around my birthday but I can't remember if I booked the week before or after. But I know the week starting 9th May was one of the two weeks. But we haven't booked any flights or accom yet so we're not too worried if I can't have the leave.
I'm just excited! My trainer kept having to pull the reigns on me in PT last night!
-
-
Doing a warm up 'happy for you' dance until the final confirmation. :)
-
I'm doing the happy dance with CeCe. So happy for you babe.
-
Hope your warmed up enough Ce! I start April 27!!!!!
-
All warmed up so here goes;
:leap: :happyforyou: :leap:
-
 Ce. I have a bottle of bubbly sitting in my fridge for when you're here!!!!!! I am so excited! And everyone on my ward has been very supportive and think I'll be brilliant at the role! Nice to hear that! Even nicer to see their compliance has tripled in the last 2 days!
-
 You've got them toeing the already. See, you're made for the job.
-
haha. I don't even have to say anything! We have a SHOCKING compliance for moving trolley's as per hospital protocol. But the last two days they magically began to follow protocol! I didn't have to say a word about protocol! To be honest, I wasn't even paying them attention a lot of the time - too many other things requiring my attention like anesthetics trying to tube a patient, a cranky family, cranky patients... I'm sure they will be back to their old ways when I get back from leave ;)
One of my good friends at work (I call her Aunty, she has been a mentor for me) cried when I told her the news yesterday (she's been away). She said she's happy for me but doesn't want me to leave! She said 1 or 2 days in DPU just isn't enough time with her lol.
I messaged my parents yesterday and told them. Mum is so happy for me! I could almost hear her yelling all the way from England!
