4 days after the surgery and I am still requiring something stronger then "panadol"
I have just been told that I should only need panadol at this point but I woke up in dire pain this morning after having a dose of panadol at midnight.
I am just wondering what is normal? What did you have?
I feel like I am the odd one out and seriously cannot imagine leaving here without a prescription let alone, right now only being on panadol.
So am I the odd one out? I did just have major surgery didn't I ?
I can't imagine Panadol would take away the pain from a C/s. I think you should tell them how much pain you're in. Because you're having the panadol they probably think it's working.
I didn't have a C/s but I needed stonger pain medcation than panadol afterwards, they always offered me panadiene forte. I never took it because I'm allergic to it so I had Tramal but they'd only give me 1 at a time which did nothing so when I got home I took Nurofen.
i was in hospital until for about the same time - i found the panadol wasn't really what i needed - it was more the anti inflammatories that helped settle stuff alongside the panadol.
if you are in pain that the panadol isn't helping, SAY something. Honestly! Everyone deals with pain differently, and you need to let them know - otherwise you will be sent home and trying to manage pain at home, and you may not have the pain killers you need. don't be embarrassed or think you are alone in needing additional relief - talk to the midwives
Oh no way, panadol just wont cut it. I was on Oxycotin (sp?) for about 10 days after my c/section. Speak up hunni and tell them you need something stronger. They sent me home with a perscription.
I was on tablets every 4-6hrs (i can't remember the name) but I took everything they gave me. I also got anti-clot injections for about 5 days. I think I took panadol when I got him.
make sure you let them know that the panadol isn't working and that you require something strong... panadol didn't help me after either of my c-sections... sometimes if you clear your bowels that will help ease the pain... just remember to take it easier especially getting in and out of bed and I've been told that a short walk also helps reduce the length of time the pain hangs around for... I'm hoping that I'll be able to get up and about alot more this time
I was given a script for di-gesic (spelling?) when I left hospital and they lasted for a few days. Then I took panadol Forte and I managed okay with that.

I agree with the previous posters. Panadol just wont cut it!
I was on a morphine drip for 24 hours after DD's birth. Then I graduated to panadeine forte and voltaren.
They told me to stick with the voltaren when I went home. Sorry, I cant remember what I took after discharge - it was sooo long ago!
If you are looking for something over the counter, try panadeine extra (paracetamol with codeine - but not as much as the forte). Even panadeine is stronger than panadol. For me, panadol doesnt touch the sides even when it comes to headaches or period pain.

OMG Littlemisspositive - I am so sorry - CONGRATULATIONS!!! I didn't read your post properly and saw your ticker and didn't realise you had the baby yet, thought you were being preventative. Congrats :) Enjoy those newborn snuggles.
When I got home I took panadol and nurofen, that combined was enough for me but I've been lucky and not had a huge amount of pain post surgery.
In the hospital though they gave me a slow release pain killer and another one that is like morphine based or something. It was a pill I dunno its name. So surely they can prescribe you something.

I had ocycodin or whatever it's called and tramadol once the PCA was taken out. Usually they would have given anti-inflammatories but I can't have those.
They sent me home with tramadol (the oxy made me feel too sick) and digesic but I found I was pretty much pain-free by the time I'd left.
Definitely speak up, but if they won't give you anything stronger definitely try panadeine or panadeine rapid/15 or something similar, but be aware that the codeine in these can constipate you which is not ideal after a c-section.
Thanks so much everyone. I have said to them that I am in pain and it seems that we are trying out different things today. Just wanted to make sure that something was not off as they kept mentioning that others had only had panadol. : ( Well, I am not everyone else, that is for sure.
I really just want to go home now. I am over it. Thanks so much for your suggestions, will be stopping at the chemist on the way home for sure... When they do let me go.....

It's pretty tough when you go from morphine to panadol! not quite the same lol!
i had panadol in hossy, but got discharged day 2, so stopped at the chemist on the way home and got mersyndol....heaven. not BF safe though apparently now i'm told!!
not sure what to do this time around, will be good to hear your experience. when are they looking at discharging you?

I am looking at going tomorrow!! Yes, just got confirmed that if all is well with K, then it is a go ahead. Just got some Panadeine fort and the doctor has confirmed he will send me home with that and a prescription for P. Forte. Oh and voltarean. I think...
I just got the bandage off my wound and already feel better... Have yet to look though....

got discharged at day 6 and was having voltaren suppositories right up until discharge. panadol and day 4 does not sound enough.
I agree with all PP's hun, at day 4 panadol is definitely not enough. I was still on some kind of strong drugs that they gave me while in hospital until day 5 then I went onto the equivalent of panadeine forte (but without codeine which I can't have but the same stress) as well as Voltaren as well. I would be speaking up because as you said it is major surgery and 4 days is no time at all to heal. xoxoxo
If you're having panadeine forte make sure you take laxatives.
I'm on panadine forte and voltaren, and I only had a few stitches for a tear - I can't imagine normal panadol would do anything for post-c/s pain!

You've got to be kidding! I needed 3 strong pain killers every 4 hours! And as they were wearing off I was in pain again keep buzzing till they give you something strong, did you also get an elastic tube from the physio? I found wearing that 24/7 helped me dramatically aswell :) it does get better just make sure you keep on top of the pain relief when you go home and rest as I tried to do things and made things worse!!!

After both C-sects I was on panadol 4 hrly from day 4 and voltaran once a day. When I went home on 5th day, panadol for the 1st day, and when needed after that (cause I would forget 4 hourly).. Maybe I am the freak of nature.
But I didn't do anything. I would go to the toilet, sit in the chair beside the bed, and get up and down to kids when they needed it. And I would lie down as soon as I was tired. I also didn't do much more than that for a week or so at home. Then started slowly unpacking dishwasher, and venturing to the mail box, and small shopping trips with DH.
Congrats on the birth of your baby boy - he is gorgeous (saw the pics on FB!). I agree with DMB here with the amount of rest you should be getting. I was just on panadol from day 5 and would also forget to take it every 4 hours. However, if I wasn't resting enough, I would get really sore and that would prompt me to take another dose. I had some busy days and they were agony. When I rested and only did what I had to to care for bubby, I was so much better. I know we are all different, but rest was the only thing that helped me. Also, I couldn't have managed without one of those CS belly-support elastic thingos that the physio gives you in hossy. Without that is really hurt. Do you have one? Trust your instincts here - only you know the level of pain-relief you require, but just remember that rest will also really help :)
ETA: I also stayed in hospital until they kicked me out, which allowed me additional rest while the nurses did some of the work. If possible, I will do the same again this time because once you head home you WILL rest less!
I'm actually quite proud of myself how I did. Considering I did heaps of walking and standing around the NICU afterwards.
Had DD Friday morning, discharged to the Mothers Unit - RCH Monday morning.
Sunday morning I just had panadol.
Sunday night I had Voltaren and Tramadol.
Monday I just had some voltaren at night.
And no pain killers after that.
What are these elastic belly band things? I've never heard of them
Danielle, it is like a tube of pretty heavy-duty elasticised material that extends from above your belly button to midway down your thighs. It's as if they cut it off of a long tube of the stuff (so the two end bit are frayed). It is cream in colour. I am not sure if it is routine at all hospitals for them to give them out, but they did at mine when the physio can around on day 2. Having said all that, I imagine that there would be commercial products available that do the same job in the event that you aren't given one? It just holds everything together :)
I took Nurofen plus.
can totally understand the panadol not working. when i had my c/s, i was on morphine for the first few days, and then panadiene forte. could you try that? or nurofen plus? that might help a little more. but definitely say something, you can't keep going in pain, it's just not right.

Which hospital was that at? I'm going to be at the Mater Womans... I haven't found a commercial product in my size :-(
North West Private, Danielle. My friend had her CS at Mater Private and she was given one (she lent it to me as a spare so I had 2).
I was on 2 x endone every 4 hours and voltaren for I think my entire stay (discharged on day 6), we tried to cut it down to one and that was a nightmare I could hardly move! I was also on voltaren. The midwives kept saying that I shouldn't need all that but I could feel it wearing off and it was so painful to move once it started to wear off. When I left I had a script for a couple of days on digesics and voltaran for about a week...After about day 8 or 9 I didn't really need anything.
I think maybe cause I had an emergency c-section, maybe they have to be a bit 'rougher?'...if you need it then take it and it will help you heal quicker!

I am starting to feel like a freak :redface: I have had 2 CS and I was on panadol only on day 2 and nothing on day 3, I was moving around alot (both babies were in NICU so I was walking back and forth) and I think this is why I felt so good, I walked alot and was even up once per night to walk to NICU to drop off my EBM and see babe, I do not suggest at all to overdo it, but I really do feel the more you move the better you feel rather than sitting in the same position then trying to get up (I hope this makes sense).
I am sorry to hear that you are in pain :hug: please tell them it is not working for you, they should offer you something stronger.

First of all. Thank you all for your quick replies. I am now home and got panadeine forte. I agree with you with how much you do. I was in dire pain last night but I was walking a bit more then I am used to. Tbh I felt like asking for more pain relief made me feel like an addict or something... They were good once I complained but just the fact that I had too ask three times for pain relief made me angry as I know that if you keep on top of it from the start, it is easier after a few days to have nothing.
As for this elastic thing. Now I am ****ed. I did not even see the physio lady... Oh she dropped by on friday with a leaflet and then left. WTF? I went private too. So should I get one? and were would I get one from? Is this similar to the belly bands that they sell at baby galore?
I have about 20 forte left and voltarin. I was not given any repeats so wondering what the hell I will do if I still need them.
I read that a small amount of you needed panadol. Thanks so much for your reply too. It makes me realise that no I was not some freak of nature as they made me feel.

I had panadol with DS#1 but with DS#2 I took painstop for kids, was a safe pain releif for BF etc...

Sorry, just seen this now. Totally appreciate the offer but got a belly bandit on Monday. So sweet of you to offer! Thanks anyways. Btw oddly enough, now that I am wearing the belly bandit the pain has subsided big time. Lets hope I am drug free very soon! xx
First CS I was on voltarin suppositories for the first 3 days plus capadex tablets for about 10 days
Second CS I as in voltarin suppositories for first 3 days plus panadiene forte for about 10 days
Very little post op pain with either CS.

So glad the support belt is working for you...I cannot believe that it isn't a routine thing for them to give mums post CS. Like I said, if I even went 2 hours without having mine on in the early days I would feel it so much more for the rest of the day. I have my 2 already washed and lined up as spares for in hossy and afterwards :)
I haven't read all the replies but the hospital was still giving me very strong pain relief when I requested it on day 5 - and they sent me home with filled scripts - the hospital definitely did not expect me to be taking "only" panadol! I think I went home still taking voltaren 50mgs which was double what my husband was given after having 3 wisdom teeth removed (no more than 3x's/day) and tramadol (no more than 4x's/day) when I needed them - plus panadol. My OB's mantra was "there is absolutely no reason to be in pain - speak up if you are"!
