In our house she pays about $3 worth of change for a first tooth and between $1 and $2 of change for subsequent teeth. The change makes it more exciting and helps their counting skills.
Oh that is a good idea, (and could make it easier because I have no clue how much I have in my purse :lol:)
We did $2 for DD1's first tooth. Did not even cross my mind to use change. For some reason I had it stuck in my head that it needed to be a whole coin :doh:
When I was a kid we got a $1 coin each tooth, though when the tooth fairy "forgot" the next night she gave $2! My twin sis and I got hoping that the tooth fairy would forget so we would ger the $2!!!
Use ten and five cent pieces, looks a lot, but isn't really! :)
$1 or $2, depends what I have in my purse. One of the kids at my DD's school gets $50!!! per tooth!!! I asked his mum if their tooth fairy would visit my house if I ripped my teeth out...

For some reason I too think it has to be a gold coin. My eldest lost his first tooth late last year and he got $1, my theory is that the bigger teeth will be worth more.
He was also told that if a tooth falls out and it has decay on it then the tooth fairy pays less for that tooth. He is very very diligent at brushing his teeth morning and night since then. Don't even have to remind him.

But... Random fact. It costs upwards of 2k for a dentist to replace just 1 adult tooth. So I might hold out XD

I would be teaching him how the australian taxation system works. Sounds like he would be earning enough to be charged an income tax of some sort
I am absolutely serious, and his mother was horrified that we only give a buck or two per tooth! She and dad are both very nice, not overly wealthy, but have not been together since the little bloke was a baby and are constantly trying to 'outdo' each other with materialistic gifts.
I'd take a happy home (with one, two or thirty two parents!) over a generous tooth fairy!

My poor DD only got 5c... but she is only 3!
Poor poppet had to have a tooth removed recently and I had to introduce the concept of the tooth fairy to make a little magic out of it. 5c was a huge deal to her though. She managed to buy some farm animals at the toy store, handing over her 5c (while Nanna handed over the other $20 odd ;))
I think about a dollar is reasonable. It is all about the magic rather than the earning capacity after all.
BTW: I came across a great kids book while looking for stories about the tooth fairy for DD (couldn't find any though), it is called 'throw your tooth on the roof' or something similar and it is all about the different traditions around the world for children when they loose a tooth. Fascinating.
for example, in some countries you throw your tooth on the roof if it comes from the top jaw, and on the ground if from the bottom!
Also, for the tooth fairy, does the tooth go in a glass of water beside the bed (as in my house as I grew up) or under the pillow.

We leave the tooth in a glass of water beside the bed, then the TF puts the money in the glass of water. She takes the teeth and uses it to make furniture for other fairie's houses. Teeth with decay would not be worth as much because the furniture would not be as good!
Teeth go in a glass of water beside the bed in my house too. And then the money is put in the glass of water. That is also what I grew up with.
Absolutely. $2 in the glass on the kitchen bench (no table in the boys' room)... easier for tooth fairy.
Except when said tooth fairy washes said tooth down sink and boy gets completely distressed... then we write a letter to the Tooth Fairy explaining what happened and then it's still $2 but not in a glass... (Naughty Mummy!)
He has wrapped the tooth in some kitchen paper and put it under his pillow, and I have $2 in change (including a $1 coin) to swap it with. I am definitely going to let him know teeth with decay are worth less, that's such a great tip :D
I was talking to someone about this the other day and got told I was tight for only giving $1!! Now i dont feel bad at all. Its not like the kids have done a chore or anything, they all loose their teeth!
DS has lost his first 2 teeth in the past 3 weeks. The second one he swallowed! The tooth fairy still gave him $1 though - wonder what furniture she'll make out of that one lol!
Oh, i forgot to add - when i was a kid i hid my tooth in a plate of flour. Mum used a tooth pick to make 'footprints' in it and $1 was left in place of the tooth.
At home now with my kids we just use a glass of water on their side table.

Growing up we left our teeth in a glass of water (vegemite jar glass!!) in the kitchen on the window sill & in the morning would find money in its place.... usually 20c but once we were at our uncles place when my sister lost a tooth & were surprised how rich the local toothe fairys were there, she got about $3!! (my 8 or so cousins, aunty & uncle all threw change in aswell lol)
Mum kept all our milk teeth & we used to play with them (eewwwwww) she still has them in a match stick box.... my older brothers, older sisters, twin sisters & mine!!!
In my house I have always told DD that the tooth fairy only likes clean teeth so she's always been good brushing her teeth ;) We will put the teeth in a glass of water aswell & the tooth fairy will throw in a heap of silver coins I think ;)
Actually it's very exciting as DD has her first very wobbly tooth so I think over the long weekend we might be getting our first ever visit from the tooth fairy!!!
My mum bought DS1 a special tooth fairy box so the tooth goes in there and the spot is big enough for either a $1 or $2 coin perfect!! But i too like the footprint idea...kids have great imaginations :D
