Breastfeeding at 19 months

My son is still breastfed and he is 19 months old. I feel proud that I can provide for him and he def uses it for comfort when sick but to be honest I would say out of my many many friends, only about 2 would be 100% supportive of it. No one has said anything rude at all but you def get that impression that they think it's odd.

I have never planned how long I will feed for and TBH I thoguht Tate would stop around 13 mnths because he def showed less interest. A couple of illnesses though have made him more interested and now we are still feeding 1-2 times a day - mostly early morning. I am not really worried about it but just suprised at how "un-encouraging" people are. Not that I expect bells and whistles but it was nce when my health nurse congrautlated us for getting this far!

Only supportive person I've had is my Nan who offers me a medal everytime I see her, she lives an hours drive but I'm always seeing her simply because her support means so much!

Yay! I think it is great. It is such a great tool to have, especially when the little ones get sick.

We have been going for almost 21months now. I know what you mean. I always get "you're still bf?" looks from certain people. But in the most part I have been able to educate others on the benefits of longer-term bf. A question i like to ask people is "Why should i not be breast feeding my child?". Turns the tables on them to hopefully question their assumptions.

Congratulations on continuing your breastfeeding journey! I fed both my DDs until they were 2.5 yrs old, and DD3 has no intention of slowing down!! A friend at a dinner party at the weekend said she had been reading about 'something called tandem feeding' and when i said i had done it twice i was pleasantly surprised that her reaction was of interest and intelligent curiousity rather than a negative reaction.

I generally find the more informed people are (because i tell them about the benefits) the better the understanding they have.

19 months!! thats fantastic! But still so young... he is still a baby and your BM is the best thing for him :) stuff them other people.. they obviously live under a rock :)

Have you ever been to a local ABA group meeting? They are a fantastic place to be around supportive mums many of whom are still feeding toddlers. Being around like minded mums can be a real boost.

Well done sweets!! :cheer: I fed DD until she was 18 months and even now, every time she gets sick I have the thought "wish I was still breastfeeding her....". It's such a comforting thing to be able to do for your child. I think you're doing a great job! :confetti:

It can certainly be a lonely club this extended BFing thing, but you arent alone and it is such a lovely thing to just get a little pat on the back every now and again :hug:

Ooh you are an inspiration! I hope to keep going for a long while yet! It's unbelievably handy as a pain relief/ keeping them hydrated when they are sick and as a comfort thing! And just so snuggly! Good on you!
I never even notice my friends' reactions, but then again, they think everything I do is weird haha!

I BF DS3 and DD for 21 months and 21 months and 9 days until they both self weaned (that was a sad day)

So feel proud and don't worry what others think. my inlaws used to make jokes and say you will still be feeding them at school. I would just laugh it off and ignore them as they were ignorant to the benefits of breastfeeding..

Yup, I just think some people cant wrap their heads around it. Screw 'em! They miss out on the snuggles, closeness and extended special bonding. Good on you feeding at 19 months :)

Im very lucky that I have friends who are breastfeeding to 3-4 years, so I have a network to vent to :)

My thoughts (and what I plan to tell people) is that people who bottle feed their children will often feed until the children are like 2 years or even 3, so what's wrong with breastfeeding til the same age!? Breast is better than formula, so what's the big deal??

i read your post title and my first thought was "how awesome to be still going strong at 19 months" good on you. I BF DS til 14.5 months and then he self weaned which was so sad for me, whereas most of my friends thought i would be happy!

By and large most people still don't have a great understanding of the importance of BF andnits benefits so try not to let it bother you (it can be hard though i know) if you ever want that pat on the back and bells and whistles ( which you deserve) i'm sure there are heaps of people on here ready to give it to you. You're doing a great job and should be proud of yourself, you are certainly not "odd" for continuing to nourish your child the best way possible :)

My DD is 21mths in a weeks time. I still BF her too. 3 times a day. She still eats bfast, lunch and dinner and snacks inbetween. I love that I can feed her.

I also get weird looks from people, but I DON'T CARE. I don't give weird looks to women that don't breastfeed at all.

Still feeding my 19 month old too! I've never had a negative reaction so I'm lucky I guess. But I fed my DS until he was 2.5yrs, so to me this still seems like early days! :D It really is a great bonus for tantrums and illness!
