So we have definitely come to the end of our pg/birth/babies journey and are not adding anymore to the crew. Now it's time to start taking contraception seriously :) and i'm just wondering what others have decided to do once they know they definitely don't want anymore babies. We are currently using condoms, but are interested in looking at other options. Thanks
At the moment we are using condoms also as we are not 100% sure we definately DON'T want to add to the brood. Once we know DH is having a vasectomy. I'm confident we wont be having anymore but the vasectomy just seems to final at this point. Maybe because out youngest is only 3months old and in anothe year or so we will know for sure we don't want to start again. Goodluck with your decision.
I have a Mirena. It's fantastic. I don't have to worry about it for 5yrs. I don't get AF and no side effects like PMT when I am suppsoed to be due. It's also economical as the Mirena itself only costs around $30, the OB around $150 to insert it and then that is that.

We're exactly the same. There's no other contraception I'll use so we'll have to wait till we're ready for the snip!:
I too want to know other peoples opinions. No plans for anything permanent at the moment as DD is only 6mos.
We are going to TTC at the end of the year, and then thats it. No more babies. I don't want DP to go through getting a vasectomy as he's still young (turning 25 at the end of the year) so he won't be able to get it done. I know quite a few people who have had issues after a vas. My dad included, he needed 2 follow up surgeries and still gets alot of pain 10 years later. Another guy actually lost a testicle after having a vas.
Too much risk for my DP to go through.
I'm going to get my tubes tied, but I'm only 19 at the moment, with a bub planned for next year some time hopefully. No-one will do it til I'm at least 30.
So there's 10 years that I'll have to do something. The Pill doesn't agree with me. I don't like the idea of the Mirena or Implanon.
I was on the mini pill till DH got a vasectomy. He did get an infection, but the main side affect is that testicle is probably now sterile, but hey to us that is fine. It is one of those occasional things that happen, otherwise it is all great ;)

we are in a similar boat. ATM we are using the good ol' condom, but it is a bit of a kill-joy IYKWIM.
I'm not going to get anything contraceptive wise I think. just the impact on my body and mood etc would be a bit too much to handle i reckon. so i *guess* the snip...but gosh, that does seem soooo final doesnt it??
From my experience, if you decide on the snip then actually MAKE them go and get it done!!
DH commented after he got it done that I seemed to be smiling so much more. I had no idea that him getting the snip would have such an effect on me :rofl:
Now if only he would do the little test so we can be 100% sure.

It's so hard to know what to do! I wish there was an easy solution.
We have talked a lot about the snip but dh is unsure about the pain/side affects etc. Has no problems with the finality of it though.

DH keeps promising me more children because we've agreed he'll get the snip once we finish our family. I'll probably be almost menopausal before we have #2 though!
We have been talking about this over the last few weeks, I am currently using implanon but I am hating it this time so dh is getting being booked in in the next few weeks. I can't go on the pill as I get breakthrough bleeding and headaches, and I don't like the idea of the mirena.
That is the hard thing to predict. It was painful for DH due to the infection, but someone else I know who went to the same surgeon was riding a horse 2 days after surgery. A friend's DH was eager to DTD less than a week after his surgery.:
I'm not a fan of hormonal contraception so we used condoms for ages. I had thought I might get fitted for a diaphragm but then DH suggested after our 2nd he might have a vasectomy. (I think he felt better about it because about 4 of his mates did it and one even had a vasectomy party, LOL!)
Honestly, we haven't looked back. There was pain afterwards but that only lasted a few days. Probably DH was more put out by the embarrassment of having a doctor touch his nads. :dunno: (There's no way he could've suffered the indignity of having babies, lol. Or Brazilians for that matter ;) )
It has made a fairly significant difference to our sex life as well. I am certainly up for it more now and I suppose that's a psychological thing - knowing that the chance of our conceiving now is next to nothing (understanding that it is possible for the vas to heal up and re-join - possible but unlikely) and somehow that makes me less inhibited.
I have Implanon and love it.
We went with the vasectomy, but I still didn't feel 100% safe. I was also having horrible periods so I got a mirena too and it made my periods go away, plus it gives me that added peace of mind.
Vasectomy and never looked back! Dp was cycling less than a week later, no complications, minimal pain (except that I had to wait on him hand. nd foot while he literally did nothing for 24hrs after the op)
Currently condoms here, was going to get Mirena when DS2 was only 6 months old but changed my mind. DH not wanting a snip so no idea what we will end up using!

DH wants the snip. I want him to get the snip. Noone around here will allow him to get it before he is 30 or has 3 kids. I had a pregnancy scare a few months back and I KNEW I was totally done.... so hoping like mad this next 16 months goes well and he can finally snip it.
Can you start the process now Niadalla? Not sure where you are, but to be done locally where I am, a snip can take up to a year. 3 months wait for the appt with the surgeon, then about 6 months for the actual op. Took a year for us, as it took DH 3 months to get around to seeing his GP for a referral and then he was away when he was first called up for surgery. DH was also "fast tracked", due to the nature of my c-sections. You may be able to push for it to be done quicker if there is a medical reason why you should not have more children.
Really? DP just called up the clinic and they did him within a few weeks - didn't need a referral, just had to read through some info and had a brief interview and he was done. He didn't have to go through any questions about partner of kids just had to agree to the permanency of the procedure and that was it.
He got it done at M arie S topes Clinic in Dandenong Rd.
Rural here - no clinics, only one surgeon who does it and only once a month. Would have had to go to Melbourne or maybe Ballarat to have found a clinic. It was hard enough doing the 20 minute drive home, let alone a 3 hour one! Imagine the man-whinging with that drive.
:shakehead: That would have been way too difficult - even with an ice-pack on the man parts the whole way.
Nai - what suburb is that clinic in? Do you need a referral from gp? Do you mind if I ask how much it cost?

Is that the place of the famous Dr Snip? I have heard great things about him. I have also heard some guys do it together, round of golf in the morning, lunch at the pub then onto Dr Snip (that is he real name I believe).:
Don't know about Dr Snip but the clinic is in Windsor or South Yarra area - all I can remember is that it was on Dandenong Rd around that vicinity. No referral required and it was only a couple of hundred dollars from memory but that was 2 years ago.
I'm going for a Mirena in two weeks - only waited that long because the local clinic recently opened its books up and that was the closest appointment. The doc bulk bills the whole lot, and that suits because DP isn't working.
DP also gets grumpy at the point of having to wear a condom, and I desperately do not need to be pregnant this year. I'd like to have it in for about a year, and I know it's supposed to be for longer term than that, but meanwhile life is too hectic to keep on top of my cycle, to take a mini-pill and I'm not taking any of the others in a pink fit (after a bout of depo years ago that I will never revisit again).
Andrew has no interest in getting the snip. I am on Depo which is doing okay for me. I did come off it for a month and I had every side effect under the sun that people can get when they stop having it. I didn't know the Mirena stopped periods too. I may have to look into that.
