I keep mine in the fridge - seem to last longer, and ever since we kept them in a bowl on the kitchen bench as a kid on the farm and I cracked one after a couple of weeks of 35+ degree days.... **shudder**
We keep our in the pantry (if buying them off the shelf) until we open them.... for some reason.
Sounds weird now that I think about it.
We keep ours in the fridge :)
Our local woolies has just moved all the eggs into a fridge when they are usually on the shelf.
We go the fridge.
Thanks ladies :) But is there a right or wrong as such????
I tend to keep mine in the fridge also :)
Ours are kept in the fridge. Though, they are currently on the bench to be brought up to room temp before baking stuff.
i keep them in the fridge but i'm sure they're actually fine in the pantry. i always take them out if i'm baking though because eggs should be at room temp for that (i think!)
ETA - snap tashy!
Fridge here! Never thought about it honestly but my local has them on the shelf.
Fridge here
Apparently they last 3 times longer if kept in the fridge. (according to the local chook keeping lady who ran a workshop here a little while ago)
You have to be careful with the fridge as they can take on smells from the fridge. (Ours are in the pantry)
Fridge here!
Apparently they go off much quicker if they are kept out of the fridge. Apparently you are also supposed to keep them in the carton so that they are not exposed to the air as much cos that makes them go bad too. Meh, we go through them so quickly they don't have time to go off!
In fridge here
Fridge here.
I did an experiment when I was working in the restaurant and the ones on the bench went off about 4 weeks before the ones in the fridge.
In the carton in the fridge not in the door (much to DH's horror - what are the egg trays in the door for?!?!?).
Though saying that our temps and climate are fairly unique and we keep much foodstuff in the fridge.
Recently been keeping mine in the fridge but only because we dont use them fast enough
sooo true CK lol. Either that or some days they might be at risk of being hard boiled.
Before I had my own chooks always in the fridge because you just don't know how old the eggs actually are.
Now that I have my own chooks I ONLY keep them on the bench in my kitchen.
Not sure who the OP was that said they go off quicker when NOT stored in the fridge, that may be true but I have eggs that have kept a little over a month on our bench and they are fine. The other thing (aside from the eggs absorbing fridge smells) just because they are in the fridge does not mean the "nutrients" of the eggs is kept in tact. They ALL start to loose their "nutrients" after they are laid regardless. Just because you CAN keep them a little longer in the fridge does not necessarily mean they will stay fresher longer. ITMS??
But there is a HUGE difference in Mass produced eggs from the supermarket and having your own chooks anyway (notthat everyone can have their own birds)
:D
Nae x
Own chooks here as well. I keep a selection on the bench, ready for any baking etc and the extra's in the fridge.
Oh and i like my eggs FERTILIZED my gosh im a loser but.......... had too do it
Fridge til it's baking time!
In the fridge.
Nae Nae that is kind of what got me thinking about it... I got some eggs from a friend who has chooks so them being fresh rather than bought from the shelf/fridge i was a little unsure how best to keep them. They're all used up now though and i kept them on the bench :D.
I would love to have chooks and have fresh eggs each day!!
Thanks ladies it almost seems to be 50/50 but one thing i did learn that i wasn't doing was cooking/using eggs at room temp. I only ever did it if a recipe specifically said.
Thanks again :)
I keep them in the fridge... but I always do a float test before I use them (if they float in water, throw them out, if they sink, they are good to use), and that's mainly cause I get them from my parents and can't always guarantee when they were collected...
I had a similar thought recently when some friends of ours gave us fresh eggs. It just felt odd putting freshly laid eggs in the fridge when its something I've ALWAYS done with store bought eggs. I ended up putting some in the fridge and leaving some on the bench- which were eaten up pretty quickly. Still got a couple of fridge ones left though.
But how long should freshly laid eggs keep for (both left on bench/pantry and kept fridge)?
And how can you tell when they're off besides the smell (i can't stand the smell of raw egg anyway so they all smell off to me)?
Bec sent this from her Samsung using Tapatalk.
Yes thanks for that zilly, i will try remember to do that test. I haven't had eggs go off very often at all. In fact i can only think of one time when i cracked one and it was off and you could REALLY tell it was off :)
