ARGH Labrador
So my beautiful 7 year old labrador is struggling.
She knocked the top off the dog food container and ate around 3kg of dry dog food. I worked in an after hours vet for years so I do know about all the hazards of overeating in a large breed dog.... There is a high likelihood that she could get bloat or GDV in vet terms, the technical name is gastric dilation volvulus. Basically the stomach twists and causes a blockage with the intestines so food can't proceed through and then causes bloat and without expensive surgery death. Sometimes, even with surgery its touch and go for 2 weeks.
I took her to the vet this arvo when she was groaning in pain and I found she ate the food. Basically its a wait and see....
I've been taking her temp every hour, listening to her guts (with my stethiscope) and taking her for slow walks in order to get her guts moving and the food to go through... urgh.

Poor puppy  i hope she gets better soon
Just curiously, can you give dogs laxatives or castor oil to help move things along or would that possibly cause more damage? I love Labs but they really are dumb when it comes to food.

Oh no! Poor, but silly, doggy. Hope she fine.

How did she go over-night?
-
How's the silly garbage guts doing?
-
how is she? I am always a bit worried about this with my lab too...they are literally gluttons for punishment!
I hope that she managed to digest it all no probs!

How is she today?

Sorry I didn't get back! been crazy with sick children etc...
She truely is a glutten for punishment this one... anyway she groaned all night long, but by morning was feeling better. She stole food off the table in the morning!!! Even when we were supposed to be fasting her for 24 hours.
The issue with laxatives or castor oil is that they do stimulate the guts, and if the stomach is pressed as big as it can, then there is a risk of perforation (or guts breaking and leaking into the abdomen) which is a fatal outcome. Her normal serving at night is 1/2 cup of this food. Which is approximately 125gm. She ate 3kg.... so her guts would have been stretched.
You should have seen the amount of poo to pick up the next day *groan*

Glad to hear she's feeling better.

Glad all turned out well.
-
so happy that she managed to 'process' her excess :)

Oh Christy!!! I'm so glad she's okay. on the stealing from the table. They never learn, do they? She's clearly loved for her sweet nature, not for her Mensa capability! :)
You must be so relieved.
