But, we usually only flash to warn drivers about cattle/sheep/kangeroos on the road.

Totally agree, this morning I had a lady behind me and she kept on flashing, went on for about 10min, in the end I pulled over because I thought maybe there was something wrong with my car and she was trying to let me know. Total PITA.

Never flash to warn of cops ahead but I will flash (once) if there is an accident etc. I drive country highways a lot and when people flash at me it's most likely some kind of accident ahead rather than police so it's kind of what's done round here. I will also flash my lights (or high beams at night) once to let a truck know they've passed me and it's safe to move over, although that doesn't happen much in our current car.
DH is a truck driver, and you will be amazed at all the little signal etc they can give eachother, they have their own whole language!!
So I do 'comunicate' with trucks, flash warnings if there is something they should know about up ahead (eg, roos or livestock on the road etc) and do the thankyou when i over take them etc..
DH gets cranky when I dont do it!! he thinks its rude not too!
No and as you have explained, it's a royal PIA and other's have explained it's illegal.
Speeders deserve every fine they get IMO, especially on the stretch of freeway I travel on, they are aggressive drivers and tail you even if you are doing the speed limit.
I don't for speed cameras. I do, however, flash people that keep their high beams on when your CLEARLY coming towards them

No I don't. I find it confusing as well, I often wonder what is wrong with the car when I think someone is flashing at me. Country here as well and I would much rather any flashing headlights are to warn of real hazards.
Depends on the situation. But yes, I have been known to.. as long as there is no one in front of me. I like to look out for the truckies aswell and use my thankyou lights :)

I'm too scared of getting caught doing it as I'm on my P's, but think it's courteous when others flash me about a speed camera up ahead. I realise it's illegal, but sometimes the placement of said speed camera is illegal also, like at the bottom of a hill!
Like most of the PP I don't for police. If your in the wrong then a fine is the consequence. I have on occasion flashed because of an accident (We have on section of bendy road that there is always an accident if it rains) or their have been roos on the road.
DH was actually flashed by a police car for going a little to fast in a roadwork zone. Naughty police man, I doubt he fined himself for it though:D
I do, and I'm always grateful when someone flashes me to let me know there's a copper up ahead. I don't speed excessively, but I do drive at about 10/15k over on clear highways when the weather's good. If I get a fine, I deal with it, but I consider it a common courtesy to warn other drivers if there's a speed camera in the area, especially if it's a poorly placed one (like at the bottom of a hill or at the end of a huge straight where it's natural for drivers to be a couple of km's over the limit). I know where most of the dodgy spots around here are anyway and tend to keep an eye on the speedo when I go through them.
No. I flash my lights if it's a narrow street and I'm letting the oncoming car go first. That's about it.
I don't. I think it is a huge PITA to be honest. If an oncoming car does it I spend the next 15 minutes looking out for things that probably aren't there and then when there is no police or anything I wonder WTF were they flashing me for? And I know of a person who flashed the oncoming car, who happened to be an unmarked police car and they were booked LOL. So it does make you think twice about doing it.

Where I live there is only one road in/out of the area and it's one of the worst roads in Vic for accidents so light flashing for speed cameras and/or traffic hazards (or ducks crossing the road lol) etc is commonly done. I do it and will continue to.

Yep, as everyone has said it is illegal, and depends on your State how (or if) its policed. In my State fines are rarely issued for such offences. There are bigger fish to fry in the scheme of things IMHO, depends on the circumstances at the time though ;).

Where I grew up it was considered common courtesy... I did, I do and I will always do it. Its not even something I think about, its just a reaction these days.
I have been "saved" many times in my p plate years by others flashing me and I'd like to think its karma when I pass on the flash. Most people only speed a little over the limit anyhow.....

I dont because if you are speed then too bad! I dont and wont speed as 1 I can not afford the fine and 2 I value my life and others lives too much to risk speeding and crashing.

:hide: Ummmmm, I do it when there isn't a police car/radar/etc when I see young hoons speeding on our local streets.To make them think they are at risk of being nabbed. I HATE speeding and I am a grumpy old woman. Hopefully it will make them slow down. God knows nothing else will :rolleyes:

from what i have been told (by police officer friends) placement at the base of the hill is a no go because the radar has to be placed on a significant angle and reduces the accuracy of the reading. i know of many people who have been pinged by badly placed cameras and have been able to have it overturned because of the placement issues.:
i always alert people when there is some sort of hazard - if they think it's because there is a camera or police car, that's on them - if it slows them down and means they "hit" that hazard at a lower speed... i also do a lot of the signals that Teirae mentioned - one of the "joys" of being raised around truckies and then marrying one!
Yep, i flash for hazards, and speed cameras. Never for booze buses. I flash to let trucks know it is safe to merge and to thank them for letting me in. i love flashers
i don't flash if there is someone driving in front of me, because i don't want to annoy/confuse them. I don't keep flashing for kms after the hazard/camera, i keep it local.
I refuse to flash when there are Police around and it bugs me do much when people flash to warn about Police in school zones. The way I see it is that if someone is to get fined for speeding, they may hopefully think twice about doing it in the future. I got fined over 10 years ago for going 10kms over and that was more than enough to make me extra cautious about speeding.

I've actually had a policeman say he doesn't mind when people do it because it actually does slow idiots down! I've done it for people who are clearly speeding and I want to try and slow down before - not that there was any police or speedcamera there.
I guess what some find acceptable speeds to do doesn't necessarily mean it's safe.

If the point of speed radars is to slow people down then flashing your lights is going to slow them down. My Mum used to flash her lights at cars she thought were driving too fast just to slow them down lol.
If the radars are just for revenue raising then they can kiss my arse. Our speed limits are so stupid. They are designed for cars from the 50's and IMO need a total rejig although TBH Australian drivers have such a difficult time with concepts like stay in the left lane unless overtaking (even if you are doing the speed limit) that maybe they don't deserve the same speed limits as the rest of the world.
I also flash for stock on the road and other hazards and I would hope that other people would do the same for me.
I usually don't flash my lights at people on high beam because my high beam is crazy bright and I don't see the point of having 2 half-blinded drivers and also because they may not actually have their lights on high beam. I once hired a car that looked like it was on high beam on low beam and I got flashed constantly - it shat me to tears.
ETA - I've been flashed by the highway patrol oodles of times. I drive the highway between Canberra and Jindabyne most weekends and over winter it has a huge police presence. I set my cruise control to 15km over the limit and they always flash me and never pull me over. I guess they're more concerned with the people doing 50k over the limit and overtaking 3 other cars at a time with only 1 lane each way.
Yep, we have been known to do it. and we are thankful when someone flashes us, regardless of the speed we are doing (which is normally the speed limit).
If we do flash its for the commuters, families and definately the truckies. And mostly we will only flash when we are in regional areas where it is more a common courtesy. And we flash for all safety things. I like being flashed when there is a safety issue up ahead as well. And yep I definately give the truckies a thank you when I overtake them, followed them in hope they would be my animal bouncer, etc.
I don't agree with drink driving at all. There are many steps that lead to a person driving after drinking, and at each point they are the decision that they will drink alcohol and then get in a car. e.g. they take their car to a place where they know there will be alcohol, they order alcohol & drink it, they decide how much they will drink (knowing they have their car), they decide not to take a cab or get someone else to drive, they get in the car & drive...:
People who are over the limit, or close to the limit (or maybe affected at all??) shouldn't be driving and i am not going to do anything to stop them getting caught.
I don't see speeding (doing small amounts over the legal speed) in the same light at drink driving. It can be non-intentional, and if them seeing a flashing light makes them slow down then the reason for speed cameras (to deter speeding) has been achieved.
I flash for hazards - accidents or debris on the road for example - but not for speed cameras. I personally think that being fined $100 is more of a deterrent than someone flashing their lights at me and hoping I see it. I've been caught speeding before, and been fined, and while it's annoying, I have only myself to blame. I won't help others to get away with speeding - eventually they'll wise up, or they'll lose their license, either outcome makes the road safer.
I have on occasion pulled over to ring the non emergency line to report cars driving well over the limit or driving recklessly. I tell them the plate number and the direction they were headed, and I can only hope that they get caught before they kill themselves or someone else.
i don't flash speed cameras, do flash hazards. Around here there are heaps of people riding cycles up single lane roads which are very bendy, so I often will flash other vehicles to warn of them. Plus roos, cows, horses, accidents, subsidence .. etc.
I also call up the EPA to report badly polluting vehicles (the ones plastered with Greenpeace / save the whales / plant a tree and meanwhile emitting clouds of smoke really annoy me!) and the road cleaning mob for people tossing cigarettes or huge litter out the window. Specially if it's maccas and around the national parks, or cigarettes and it's summer.

Every time I get flashed, I check my speed and realise I'm not going over anyway. That said, I have been snapped going about 8kms over the limit, on a long, wide country road where it was 100kph and was really annoyed by that! I was in MiL's car going to visit my mum, because our manual transmission car had died, and MiL's car was auto and I wasn't really used to it for country driving (had only used it for urban driving from time to time before that). Anyhow, no-one flashed me that time and when they do I'm the only one who doesn't have to slam on brakes.
I might have to start flashing, though, on the road to Morwell, because I have seen some real dumb things, and it's no wonder a car took out a tanker in June, with both occupants instantly dying and then frying in the incineration. No surprise at all :(
