How old was your bub when you could tell what colour their eyes were going to be?

I'm curious and can't for the life of me remember how old DD was when her eyes changed from newborn/baby blue to their lovely clear blue that they are now. I always knew hers would be blue though, as both her father and I have blue eyes. DH however, has brown eyes - so I'm curious to know whether DS is going to have blue like me or brown like his dad...or something else entirely :)

So how old were your kids when their eyes took on their "normal" colour? And what colour are your/your partner's eyes compared to your kid's eyes?

my sons eyes went from bbay blue when first born to a deep brown within a couple of weeks DD on the other hand has a really bright blue eyes and they are still bright shes nearly 2 i have Green eyes and DH has brown so who knows.
My little sisters were 7 years old when theirs changed from blue to green *dunno*

back again it was about 12 months when it really showed brown but they were always dark blue from the start so i was waiting for them to change =]

DD1's eyes were a very clean blue right from the start and are a beautiful blue/green. DD2 had blue/grey eyes for almost 4.5 months before they started to slowly change. By 6 months they were a gorgeous dark brown just like her daddy.

I have one brown eyed child and I could tell from birth that her eyes were going to be brown. It was almost like you could see the colour underneath, if that makes sense?

It sort of does actually - Penguin's eyes are very dark grey/blue, but seem to have brownish undertones particularly close to his pupil. I'm putting money on brown for him :)

Yep, that's how it was with my DD's eyes. All my other kids had blue eyes and you couldn't see a colour underneath.

My baby is just over a year old now and his eyes are still changing! At birth they were an amazing bright blue and then they slowly turned to a blue gray over the first 6 months. I always knew they were going to change, as some said you can see near the pupil and what also was a big give away was a brown spot in them. This was despite me having every relative tell me that they were going to stay blue like great grandma lol I knew but no one else did. After about 9ish months they changed to a hazel blue green colour and now they are like a hazel but with much more of a brown undertone. So they are still changing, despite me still having people tell me they are staying blue hazel hehe. They'll get to brown one day! Me & DH both have brown eyes btw.

I think I read somewhere that blue eyes turn blue the fastest, brown eyes take a bit longer unless you're ethnically darker skinned (for some reason) in which case eyes can go brown almost immediately. Green eyes take the longest and keep changing.

Dh 's eyes are classed as hazel, they change colour hour by hour. I've sat and watched them change from light brown to deep green.

Ds has green eyes, they took well over a year to change, although it was a long change not sudden.

Dd 's eyes are still changing. She's 5.5 months. I was certain they were going to be dark brown like my eyes, but now I'm wondering if she'll have green eyes, too.

My eldest sister has crazy yellow eyes. I'm sure they were brown when she was little but have turned yellow as she ages. Weird.

DS' eyes were an amazing bright blue when he was born, but have definitely lightened in the last few months to the same blue-grey of DH's eyes. Having said that, DH's eyes still change colour depending on his mood (and what he's wearing can bring out the blueness too) and DS' do too. He's 19 months old.

DS has blue eyes and is 3 and just the other day I was looking at them thinking they have changed again. Now they are a muddy grey/blue rather than a deep darker blue like they were!! DD's changed to the colour they are now by around 2 but even then I think they have gotten darker(goldy/hazel) !!! So much for they will be the colour they are at 12 months like so many people say!

Oh and how do 2 brown eyed people have a bluey - 5% chance or something!!! Heehee!!

DS currently has clear blue eyes, but DH has very green eyes and his only changed to green when he was 3. I gots a long wait ahead of me.

my DS1 had blue then green at about 4 months then at 6 months they turned very dark brown despite having two blue eyed parents!

My DD1 had very blue eyes but they have slowly changed to a grey/green like mine, around 2.5 years before they stopped changing
DD2 had very bright blue eyes and they have stayed blue but are now a lighter blue, this was around 18 months

DD was born early and her eyes were black for a few months.
They started to lighten to blue at about 4 months (2 1/2 corrected), and they've stayed blue. She's about to turn 1.
I have blue eyes, so she gets it from me.

Both of my kids are still slowly getting darker. They are blue eyed but are turning slowly hazel/blue. They are 3.5 and 2.5.

From memory the gene works that if there is NO blue/green in your DH's parentage, babies eyes will be brown.
I suppose it's not a hard and fast rule but i remember doing 'punnet squares' in yr 12 biology for gene pairing and it makes sense.
Something like as follows - To have a blue/green eyed baby, one parent needs to have a dominant gene and the other a recessive for it.
Recessive gene come from their parents.
I was shattered when I found a refresher on gene pairing and realised that even though I have blue eyes I won't have a blue eyed baby.

Dh has brown eyes and I have green.

DD has electric blue eyes. Always has.
DS was born with grey/blue eyes but flecked. Now at nearly 3 they are still changing. Might end up with a green eyed child yet.

DS1, DD2 and DS2 were all born with dark brown eyes, it was quite remarkable to see these tiny babies with such dark brown eyes because most other babies have blue eyes. DD1 however was born with the typical baby blue eyes, but by 3 months old hers were a hazel colour. I have dark brown eyes and DH has hazel coloured eyes. We were never going to have blue eyed kids LOL.

Blue is recessive, you need 2 blue genes for blue eyes, you and your dh must both have a recessive blue gene. This gives your offspring a 25% chance of having blue eyes.

My sisters and I were all born with brown eyes (Eastern European genes). My eyes are not anywhere near as dark brown as either of my sisters, more of a muddy greeny-brown.

My DD was born with her clear blue eyes and they didn't change at all. I was surprised! They are much brighter than DP's and on my side are like my grandfather's were (so she's the first to have blue eyes in our line for three generations).

My DP has blue eyes and my Mum has green eyes. Since our DD has blue eyes, it means I also carry the recessive blue gene. Also means we can't actually have a brown eyed child - it would either be green or blue all the way. Weird, huh?

ds has blue eyes but at 4 months I started to see a very small green patch in one of them. As both dh and I have green eyes I had assumed they would turn green. He is 14.5months now and they haven't gotten any greener so now I'm thinking that he will keep his blue eyes as both of his grandfathers have blue eyes. I've also been noticing loads of adults with blue eyes and a green patch in the same spot as ds. I've been looking at the iridology chart to see what area in the body it relates to so that I can be mindful of his diet etc Apparently there are only 2 true colours, blue and green and everything else is an indication of problem/weak areas in the body or constitution. I also know of people that have changed their green eyes back to blue as adults. Soooo I will work on clearing up ds's green patch if he eyes stay blue. I think eye colour is supposed to be set by about 2yrs of age.

Thanks Kuraiza, DH's grandfather has blue eyes, dad has green, my dad has hazel green but no blue that I know of on mine (although could be grandparents that I never me overseas - must ask mum!) so it's rather interesting!!

My baby is nearly 1 and we still can't tell! They were brown for a long time, but they seem to be greening out a bit.

My Mum has blue eyes and my Dad has dark brown, she was so excited because she wanted a brown eyed baby. Nope, she got flecked hazel, darker flecked hazel and blue!

My daughters eyes were the darkest shade of brown (pretty much black) from birth, but her daddy is of Indian heritage. They have stayed that dark and she is now over 2 1/2.

I have brown and DH has blue and we ended up with a blue eyed little girl....I knew from the start they were staying blue as they were just so bright...they have lightened up a little over the three years but are still very blue.
I never thought I would have a blue eyed child (all that recessive gene stuff) cause no one in my family history that we know of has blue eyes but obviously its there somewhere....both my sister and I have ended up with blue eyed children!

I have 4 kid my 3 boys were born with almost black eyes, they were never blue and they all have brown/ really dark eyes now. My DD had Blue eyes until she was 3 and then almost over night they changed to a greeny browny colour

mine were all blue eye's til around 8 months, brown by 12 months.
dd3 is different though. hers are a hazelly brown... i'm brown, dh is blue-grey, mil; blue-grey, fil; brown (from memory), my mum; blue, my dad; brown.
dunno where the hazel comes from, but its cute! they'll probably get darker...

I have green eyes, sometimes bright green, sometimes almost hazel. DH has pure blue eyes, not a fleck of brown in them. My three kidlets all have DH's pure blue eyes.

As far as eye colour is concerned, there is only 'blue' or 'brown'. Anything other than brown (hazel, green...) is considered 'blue'. We each receive one gene from each parent, either blue or brown. Brown is dominant so if you inherit one brown gene (or two brown genes!) you will 'display' (have) brown eyes. To have blue eyes, you must inherit ONLY blue genes, one from mum and one from dad - blue is recessive. So if you have blue eyes (or green) you ONLY possess blue genes, otherwise you would display the dominant brown gene. It is a genetic impossibility for two blue eyed parents to have a brown eyed child. They only have 'blue' genes to give to their children. (A child of any parent with brown eyes can be either blue or brown, depending on whether the recessive blue gene exists in the familial line).

When I was about 16, I wondered where my brown eyed brother and sister came from - mum and dad are both 'blue' (green) eyed... ahh, the skeletons which eventually fell out of that closet!!

I have hazel eyes that go anything from green to brown and dp has blue.

Dd1 was born with eyes like pools of black ink and they became dark brown not too much later. I think she got the. black Irish throwback gene :dunno: Dd2 was born with china blue eyes and they have stayed thay way.

I just read the wikipedia article on eye colour. Illuminating.

Turns out eye colour is not the result of a single gene, and the colour is actually determined by the amount of melanin present in different layers of the eye and the refraction of light through those layers. There is no actual pigmentation other than brown.

It would appear the genetics of eye colour is very complicated and differences in eye colour in families may not be immediate cause for alarm.

I also discovered my sister's yellow eyes are called amber.

With my green eyes and DH's brown eyes it was pretty obvious that our babies would have brown eyes long before they were born.
DS1 was born with black brown eyes and they are still the same colour. You have to look hard to see the pupil because they are so dark.
DS2 has eyes the colour of 70% dark chocolate. Yum.

Green eyes are part of the brown genetic pool but as kuraiza just pointed out eye colour is more complex than brown dominant/blue recessive.

DH has hazel eyes, I have blue eyes, and DS has my blue eyes.

DS's eyes were a very dark grey/green/blue - sort of a slate/sea colour, but they lightened up within a few months to the blue they are now.

I wondered whether they would darken and go to a grey or grey/green (like my mum's) or go hazel, like DH's, but they've stayed a gorgeous blue :D

Now to see what happens with Ziggy's eyes!! Chances are he'll get DH's hazel, but you never know ... from the genes available from the grandparents, he could end up with blue, green, grey or hazel!
