Do you use candle, incense or both? When?
I seem to go in stages but I've spent a fortune on candles over the last year!

I prefer the ambient perfumers (the sticks in a bottle) because if the boys knock them over they aren't dangerous and also because they scent the air without smoke.
I am trying to buy only a couple of scents so hopefully the house has a nice all the time scent but not to overpowering.
The only trouble it that you probably need to burn them to get the full scent but I like the look of new candles.
I also go in stages in buying them and if you get them from a ceertin shop they are not cheap. Hopefully with the warmer weather coming the scent will be stronger.
There has to be a way to get the scent in the house :)
I like incense but I dont use it that often. In winter I like eucalyptus in an oil burner (I have always loved the smell and freakily I recently found out one of my great grandfathers was an eucalyptus distiller). I also have used an ambipur plug in thing. Vanilla was nice.
I can't seem to find candles that put out that much fragrance...
I use soy melts in an oil burner, delicious & the scent stays around, on a warm day you smell them without burning. I have some candles which I burn randomly too, generally on days I do a big clean :)
Today it's vanilla in the lounge & kitchen.
I also use the fragrance sticks in the toilets ;)

i'm not a fan of the fragrance stick in oil things - i've reacted seriously badly (hayfever or instant migraine) to far too many of them (although partylite ones i'm ok with - go figure)
i'm not a fan of incense at all - i find the smell cloying and i get really unwell (similar reaction to above)
candles are always on display here - i have the "pretty" candles - the ones that look nice, may have a smell, may not) and the "practical" candles - the ones i burn. at the moment our house smells very christmassy with thanks to candles and the warmth. peppermint bark and holiday spices/clementine and clove candles in about 115 holders around the house. none of them burning, but the smell is pretty cool! i won't say how many candles i have stashed for "when i feel like that smell" burning lol

I go through phasesbut in my regular stash of incense I burn Nagchampa (sp?) and Sandalwood (in the pink and gold box). Candles I prefer unscented though was recently given a cinnamon one which was heavenly. I DO love my Inessence "Harmony" blend that I use in my oil burners.
I don't tend to buy a lot of that stuff because I'm like BG and most of it really irritates me. But I have a Glade french vanilla candle I got in the supermarket on the dining able and it's gorgeous! It smells lovely even when it's not burning.

I wish I had a huge stash!! Mine depends on how I am feeling but I do have a heap of body shop home oils from the UK that my gf gets me every time she is there, they are all scents not available here. Today I am burning Warm Amber because we have a party on tonight, but I do love more natural scents and essential oils. Also love the smell of Nag Champa but have to burn it when DH isn't around because it makes him sneeze!!
is it at this point that i admit i had to commandeer an extra container off hubby cos the *cough* 8 *cough* 52L tubs were bursting at the seems... and that i could probably still fill another at least half way...?

Im pretty fussy though, they have to be naturally derived fragrances, essential oils that actually smell like real things. I can't stand the oil diffuser and plug ins, they're all nasty artificial smells.
I have a pretty healthy stash, love vanilla, spices, citrus, geranium, etc, they're all housed in their very own chest of drawers. but uh BG you're putting my stash to shame!
shall i mention that DH has his own stash on top of that one?? his own holders and his own candles (both in his bar and in the garage for outside use...)
No. I love the look of them and the smell of them, but I've been to too many house fires accidentally lit by candles (and plenty where there were only adults present) and been involved in major burns surgery for too many children. They aren't experiences that leave quickly.

Yup, fires/ burns happen with candles and incense.:
They also happen with fire associated with cooking
Drowning happens with water
Accidents happen in cars
As I have with cars, water, and cooking using flames, I have chosen to use candles. I will never say "it won't happen to me", for ANY of the scenarios I listed, but engaging safe usage practices for each of them minimizes risks to a point I am comfortable using them.
I understand, in your profession, that you have witnessed a lot that many of us will never have to see, Kim, but reading your post I honestly got a vibe that it was irresponsible for anyone to use them. Safe practices are there for a reason. So long as they are used SAFELY there is no problem. It is people leaving flames unsupervised, whether from a candle or a cooking appliance, or using them in an unsafe location or near unsafe materials that lead to fires being started. It's not about age - I know many many adults that wouldn't bother taking steps to make sure an area was safe.
Perhaps I have misread your intent of your post and if I have I apologies. My interpretation was that you were saying candles are TOO unsafe. I can think of MANY unsafe activities (as mentioned) that we do daily. We weigh up the risks, put in place best safety practices, and continue to do them. They are not necessarily needs based, but we continue because the risk is minimal, and the positive outcome to our own existence outweighs any perceived risks kwim?
Incense at home but I have about 30 different types.
I use oils with tealights (woolies being the cheapest for non-stinky tealight candles)
I love candles but they have to be good quality ones with proper oils or else I get the migraine from hell. Likewise with incense, disfusers etc.
I go through stages of using them Spent a fortune on them before the girls were born and after, then stopped when they got mobile. Started again but then stopped when started TTC because I can never remember what essential oils I can and can't burn!!
I used to burn white candles every day and incense, now I hardly use either unless I've got people coming over then I often burn incense in the garden :) I love them both so I might start using them again! 2012 I'm turning over a new leaf and getting back to all the things I used to love, gym, beach, and now candles and incense! Thanks for the reminder!
I also have charcoal blocks that I use resins on but that is usually for rituals (like I've got some burning now ready for the eclipse)

I totally take the point about the risk involved, I've seen that footage of how long it takes for the whole room to catch on fire when the candle tips over. Another reason to pay that bit extra for good candles - I've had problems with cheapies in the past where the wax (ie the whole candle) has caught on fire, as well as cheap candle holders exploding from the heat. But like all things, a bit of care goes a long way.
I didn't mention my fave fave favorite is beeswax candles - the smell is heavenly and they give such a soft beautiful light.
Kim there's nothing wrong with your post so I can't see why you would delete it hon. The op asked if you use candles and incense and you don't and you gave a reason why. If the op asked for only people who use them to comment than I'm sure you would not have said anything. Besides your post wasn't rude or judgemental at all :D
