What is your 4-6 yr old girl getting??! I need ideas!!

As title suggests! Yes I am her mum, yes I should know what to get but OMG I find it so hard - could be partly my anxiety that goes through the roof with sensory overload in toy stores!

We try to buy open ended stuff, she loves jewellery making ( we have bought her a little set of beads) Strawberry shortcake (are those house things worth it?? Feel like they will be played with for 2 seconds!) loves playing in the mud and making mud pies, dolls, Barbies (comes and goes though), Lego (we have heaps - so I need fresh ideas!!

Hit me people hit me!! Doesn't help I also need to give MIL some ideas and also my mum :rolleyes:

I know where you are coming from its hard enough for me to get ideas for gifts from us let alone to give family memebers ideas! My DD is very much an outside person

DD 5 is getting a Cars Go Cart, she has wanted a go cart for ages. My Parents are getting her one of those net things that you throw balls onto and they rebound. She is also gelling a pogo stick (with a round bottom) from someone.

My brother and SIL gave both girls a small musical jewellery box and they both love it.

We have also got a game for her leap pad.

Has your DD got one of those sand/water play tables our girls love making mud pies in it, very messy though. mum got the girls a pop up castle online which they have been playing with

Dress ups are always popular here

DD2 is only 3 but loves her plastic F&P Dolls House so we are getting her a bigger one for her b'day

DD1 is mad on her scooter

DD1 got one of those game sets with a tennis balll and two velcro catcher things that she likes

TBH we arent getting her much - we are doing a family road trip to Melb so that is kinda the big present!
We are getting small things:
a hula hoop
some dot to dot/writing books
a hairbrush/accessory kit

but she is currently obsessed with nailpolish!

I got my niece (age 5) a barbie doll.

Is she a girly girl? What about clothes, bags, shoes, hairclips, necklaces "dress up" type costume jewellry.

Stuff for outside, eg a skipping rope, balls, pogo stick, that tennis ball on a stick thinggie (can't think of the name).

Is she interested in flowers or gardening (beyond making mud pies)? Maybe her own seedlings to grow.

Ummmmm. I will have this problem too in a few years ;)

I know we're finding it hard to get them something that will love and just not fill the toy room even more.

So I got the girls to write a santa letter with me there. Then I just use the letter as inspiration as to what to get them. This year DD1 wants a trumpet, so instead we're getting her a recorder (I honestly dont think she'd know the difference) and a few other things for them to share (not too sure what to give DD2 from santa as she only asked for toys and more toys). I want to get them a milkshake maker (because its purple and well the girls just lvoe their milkshakes!) but not sure what else this year.

DD loves board games and books - her big ticket item this year is a doll house that fits her barbies in it. She's going to love it!

Board games are good because they can learn to follow the rules and lose happily ;) - my mum has got DD a make-up set and OMG she is going to love that (watch out carpet!!)

Girls here are getting scooters, lava lamp for their bedrooms, body board and a dress for Christmas day.
During the year they got Leap pads they love, Lava art sets, Mosaiq jewellery box to make, art and craft supplies.
Our dolls house gets a work out with the toys all mixed up - Strawberey S, MLP and LPS. I was determined not to buy any more of those little bits.
We have tried to give practical suggestions, bathers and towels, clothes, lunchbox for school and also beanbags to rellies.
ETA - Kmart had a heap of $10 pressies that looked pretty good!

Well i have boys but if your girls are into contruction i really recommend MOBILO. you can buy lots of stuff to add to it. my boys LOVE it and so do all the kids who come over (many ages and both genders) to our place
so far my kids arent into the toys that are characters - dora, MLP etc so I dont know much about them... but i have heaps of construction, craft etc and they are great.

A swing set, a pillow pet, a barbie car. Barbie DVD, clothes, hair clips/bands, books - some educational, scooter, stocking fillers such as small puzzle, toothbrush, bubble bath stuff, etc

She would love a scooter but it wouldn't suit the area we live in she couldn't use it in the backyard or street. She is getting a Dora doll, (not ideal but she asked for it) an iorning board from her pop, some Mickey mouse clothes and a little mickey car, she is obsessed with him and finally baby Cinderella. She will get bubbles and new pencils too as stocking fillers.

Great ideas all!! Forgot about board games, I was going to hunt a few down and forgot about it, she's got a scooter from my mum /santa, and is not really a girly girl but in between really - will play Lego and trains with JJ but also get her dolls and Barbies out so you would think it would be easy! Going to look at the pogo stick too - looks like something both would enjoy!!!

My dd is 4 and she has asked for a barbie cd player, a mighty beans trick track, and a library bag. Random lol. She asked for these things a few weeks and has been pretty consistent in wanting them so I'm pretty sure she'll be happy on Christmas morning.

The other thing that is played with massively is playdough, there are lots of interesting accessory sets that support open ended play.

Eta if you want to refresh the Lego collection have a look at some of the belville stuff

Thanks MD!! She has a pink box of Lego Belville stuff ( had no idea that was what it was called!!) already plus all the other police/space pieces we have but might look and see if I can find some more to add to it!

Barbie all the way for my little miss 4 1/2! But we also got her some dress ups, a craft box (with glitter, stickers, coloured paper, scissors ect...), story books about things she loves or what is happening in her life (we got a book about going to pre school, one about dancing and a barbie story), some activity books with NSW cursive writing in it (sheis learning to write and LOVES to write at the moment), some playdough and playdough tools (roller, cutters, ect...).
Big thing we got for all of them is a swing set.

How about some outdoorsy stuff, like a soccer goal thingy, or those tennis sets with the ball on a string, a mini tramp, sand pit, water play table, slip n slide, subby house. OR some kitchen-ish stuff, like pots and pans, maybe a kitchen if she doesn't have one? Even if she doesn't kitchen stuff with playdough goes down well at our house! My DD loves it!! Or a dolls house with little dolls/people. Educational stuff like leapfrog or vtech computer-ish things.

We've bought DD the fairy series of books. She's quite a good reader, but these will extend her. Usually she gets something practical/significant, but this year I'm already working on the little sister she's been begging for!

Haven't worked out what is from Santa and what is from us yet, but DD1 (just turned 4) is getting a Barbue cd player - very pink! lol Some more Grug books, a few other books, come colouring books, a new dress, a frisbee and some little toy animals, a Leap Pad if I can hunt one down, and a Dora hopalong bouncy thing (the balls with the handles you sit on and bounce around on); a Disney princess watch, a worm farm. Will probably get her some bubble bath and hair clips too.

We tend to give her a fair bit at Christmas, so far my brother and sister have been beyond slack sending her gifts from Melbourne at birthday or Christmas (as in, couldn't be arsed even sending a card) and MIL didn't even send her a birthday card from NZ this year either. She has spoken to BIL and said she is going to give us money to buy something for her ourselves (not impressed with that at all). We have a friend coming to stay for Christmas so he is getting her a Dora doll of some description I think.

Like you Limey, i give DD more than i would if she had relatives that gave her pressies (cos that doesn't happen), so i try to make up for that.

i got her a mermaid pop up style book at the book depository, and a cd of the songs from The Gruffalo's Child, cos she loves those songs. I'm making her a felt matchbox dolly house (miniature, to wear like a necklace). She's getting a renovated wooden doll's cradle from me (hope she's not too old for that but this is the first chance i've had to get her one, after wanting to get her one since she was two), and a pre-loved bike with pedals from her dad.

the best open ended toys she has, seem to be the playcloths i made out of metres of muslin, and dyed them. i was so sus, that she would find them boring, but she finds endless ways of playing with them.

Like, you can get those doll heads in Kmart and target. There is a Barbie one that doesn't look scary. I saw a generic one that looked scary/evil! I think that is what my aunt is getting dd.

Thanks for reminding me about bubble bath! Dd has been eyeing some off in target that I might get today.

My dd has been asking for a cupcake maker as well. But I think we might do that for her birthday which is in feb.

From other ppl DD is getting cooking sets (Masterchef), swimmers, a baby doll and clothes, dresses, Santa is bringing her a walking, talking Pinkie Pie pony (she requested) and pens, smiggle case, skipping rope, dominoes, hair clips in her stocking, an outdoor table and chair setting, and a few other things from friends and relatives.

DD1 and DD2 7.5yr and 5.5yrs are getting target kids digital cameras. $20 each.

Lime, the doll head was from an educational online catalogue - Parents Direct I think. But I have seen them in Big W and Kmart I think. It is basically a head with hair on it and comes with combs, clips etc to do diferent hairstyles. Some also come with makeup.
