First Ultrasound should be when??

Wow.... announcements, amazement, excitement, fear... changes!!! It's been a massive week!!! Feels like a month ago I got the positive result not a week!!

So of course, all the fear of if it's ok is REALLY getting me now, and I really can't wait for the scan to assure me!

I just got the letter from the Women's confirming the appointment for my first ultrasound - 14th March!!!!!

My last period was on the 26th December, (5 weeks ago) I conceived on 9-10th January (3 weeks ago) .... I thought the first scan was 6 weeks???

Am I wrong ...or have they mucked it up?

The first scan is usually a dating scan but since they're sure of your dates they won't do one.

Yeah the first official opportunity to have a scan is around 12 weeks. Some people will not have that, and their first will be around 20 weeks! As they (and you) are sure of your dates, there isn't that need. Many people get an early scan anyway, for reassurance :)

those first weeks are really tough. i've found waiting for that first scan at 12 weeks very tough (i've always been sure of my dates & so no dating scan for me). :hug: i hope the time passes quickly for you (i would POAS daily for a couple of weeks till i felt really reassured that i was still PG :lol: )

The NT Scan is usually the first a person has but it is actually optional, it is at 12 weeks. The only routine scan is the morphology one at 20 weeks. My first and only scan with both my pregnancies was at 20 weeks.

Goodness me you are patient! I have had three already... one in emergency for a suspect ectopic, one from my IVF clinic, and a dating scan. I just love seeing "sheldon". So cute :D.

But most common would be to have the optional 12 week NT scan and the 20 week morphology scan and nothing else.

Oh dear!!!! And I thought the 2 week wait was bad!!!!!!!!!

They may have to certify me and lock me up before 12 weeks! LOL

I got an appointment that far in advance from the womens - it was described as a scan because of 'advanced maternal age'.....thanks :)

But I also got a seperate letter stating that all other blood tests and scans should be organised through my doctor.....so I ended up getting a 6wk (through the fertility specialist), the 12 and 20wk scans through a referral from my GP (had to pay for these).
I don't think any of the hospitals do a 6-8wks scan as routine....most people get these as a dating scan just to confirm dates (but more cause they want to make sure bubs is OK).

With my first I was asked if I wanted to do a 12wk scan and that was the first scan I had.

I had a 7 week dating scan, referal through my local GP. It didn't cost my anything as they bulk bill at the scan place.

Had a 12week NT scan - this cost $200 from memory.

Then a 20 week dating scan, referal through my local GP. Once again it didn't cost me anything as they bulk bill.

Haven't and won't have any scans through my hospital.

It's usually 12 weeks, however I'm not sure that one is mandatory through the public system. I think it's just the 20w scan.

With my first baby mu one and only scan was at 18weeks.
With no two I had a dating scan due to me not knowing my dates we were not ttc and I was on contreception so I really didn't know.
With my last I had scans at 4.5, 5.5, 6weeks to see if she was in the right spot as I had an ectopic pregnancy and my only tube was damaged so high chance of a repeat. I had another scan at 10weeks, 11weeks and 12weeks for peace of mind (they took all of 30secs literally to see her and her heart beating and that was it)

Congrats! It's not really necessary to have any scans unless you have a particular reason or desire.
Hope the weeks fly by for you in any event. Once your'e feeling regular movements hopefully you'll be more reassured about the pregnancy

Unless you have a pragmatic GP like mine who said "Why do you need a dating scan? Are you sure of your dates? Yes? Then no scan til 12 weeks, off you trot!" :lol:

My GP told me no to the dating scan first PG too. 2nd PG I just told her the Fertility specialist said I had to have it done and they told me to get the referral through her instead of having to travel over 2 hours to get the referral from them.

Huh... so, being 38 - should I be having a 'advanced maternal age' too??

My sister said (now that she knows and I can talk to her about it!!) that she just went to a doc she hadn't seen before and told them she'd just discovered she was pregnant and needed to know dates.. so got a 6 week scan.

I'm not sure about how my GP will feel about sending me one, since I'm sure the Royal Women's Hospital will let him know I've got one booked... not too keen about fibbing either, but I guess when it comes to baby's health I'll be prepared to do anything!

Seems like it comes down to whether your gp is supportive or not! DS was through IVF so a scan at 6-7 weeks was routine. This one was natural but I asked my gp for a referral for a scan at six weeks for peace of mind and she was happy to do so. She called it a dating scan so I could claim some money back from Medicare but we were out of pocket a couple of hundred dollars.

I would just ask your gp for a referral and tell the truth, worst he can do is say no.

so... My GP is understanding!! Referred me for the 6 week scan.
It cost me $150... not sure if this was a mistake, they didn't ask for my health care card and I was too excited to ask.. but anyways...
The guy doing the scan was pretty rude to my sister who wanted to come in with me to see nephew/niece and he rushed me through.. I was in there like no more than 5 minutes!!!!..

BUT- even if it wasn't the nicest of settings or experiences, once I saw that little heartbeat I almost burst into tears!!!!!!

So glad you got to see a heartbeat, even if the rest of the experience wasn't great. It really won't be long now until the 12 week one :)

Yay for seeing the heartbeat! I'm 16 weeks and already had 4 scans (dating scan at 6 weeks, emergency one due to bleeding at 9 weeks, nuchal at 12 weeks and another at 14 weeks due to cramping and other issues)

Next one due in 3 weeks :)

Oh dear cmkm?.. that's alot of scans!!! Lovely to see the your baby so many times, but with such stressful circumstances I'm sure it wasn't such a wonderful experience!

Right now I dislike dating scans!
Why on earth do some Dr's send us for them when they know it could be too early - insert tonnes of stress here - I get I have history and they want to make sure. But oh the anxiety of waiting especially when you get a less that friendly sonographer!
