So guilty :(

We've got mice. Therefore I have had a ratsak block (can get them in wax block) concealed outside. I know full well that our dog is an outside dog when we are not home, so I made sure it was well hidden, hard to get to etc. Had one down for a few days without incident. I replaced it this morning, as the box says if it has been nibbled at to replace it for a new one. The block had definite mice teeth marks in it.

Unbeknown to me the dog was inside watching what I was doing. When I got home at 1pm this afternoon (was out from 8.15am) there was a half eaten ratsak block on her outside bed :wall: So much for the hard to get to and well hidden spot. Rang vet and rushed her straight in to induce vomiting. She had two lots of Soda crystals followed by an injection. She brought some of it up, but I don't think it was enough compared to what was missing from the block. But her stomach was empty after vomiting from the injection.

She is now on vitamin K tablets for 2 weeks and the next 48hrs is critical. Have to keep a close eye on her, and her stools in case they contain blood, as the ratsak will cause internal bleeding if she digested enough. God if something happens to her I am going to have to live with the fact that I basically killed her for the rest of my life. She's not even 6mths old, and had the worst possible start in life being a rescue pup that was found dumped.

The vet is going to ring and check in on her on Friday, but if we notice any change in behaviour we have to take her straight back.

Rat sak is such a necessary thing to use, I know we use it and know we have had issues with dogs and it before and had 2 of them at vet and induced to vomit at after hours vet.

My dog ate ratsak once, we didn't know until blood started dripping from her mouth. She needed to stay at the vet for a few days and had blood transfusions and was back to her normal self in no time. Your dog's young and strong so she should be ok. xx

I really hope your puppy is OK. As others have said, this was not intentional. You tried to hide it but some dogs will eat anything. Luckily you got home when you did and were able to act quickly.

How is she going now? I hope she is ok.

She is sleeping at the moment, but usually does when it is just me and her, as she doesn't get any rest once the kids are home from school. She has coughed like she is about to vomit twice since I have been home with her, but nothing has come up. Not sure if that is something I should be concerned about or not, or if it is still "leftovers" from the injection that made her vomit yesterday.

I have a friend coming to sit with her shortly as I have to go to a psychologist appointment. I would have cancelled if I couldn't get anyone to watch her.

Yeah her regurgitation would be from the injection yesterday, it causes the stomach to spasm and can last on/off for a few days.

Please don't blame yourself!! But no bones or sharp toys in the next few days okay? Let the Vit K do its thing! xoxoxo

I <3 you Christy. I did read on another forum today about keeping sharp stuff away. She's a bloody stick chewer too grrrrr LOL. Might have to go and buy her a different Kong to keep her entertained.

Having been a vet nurse for many years before having kids, I can't tell you how many times I've seen pets that have eaten ratsak, and I can assure you that not one of them ever meant to let their pet get to it. It's an accident and unfortunately they happen. You'd be amazed how determined some of them were to actually get to the ratsak!

You've done the right thing and been to the vet asap. I've had a lot of people that didn't realise that they need to be seen asap to try to purge as much as possible from their system, and many people assume their pet is fine because they can't see any outward sign until it's sometimes too late.

So forgive yourself for making a small mistake and take comfort in knowing that you are doing everything right by your precious pup ♥

Yeah she is doing good. I think she would definitely be showing signs by now if she was going to, since it has been 4 days. The mouse that ate the ratsak block the day before turned up dead today. We go back to the vet on Wednesday for a check up, and to check on her weight. If she has had a growth spurt her medication has to be increased. So I think she's in the clear. Phew.

Well I don't think we are out of the woods just yet. I have noticed 3 dark spots on her chest today. Looks like bruising :( It's a public holiday here today, so can't get her into the vet until tomorrow to be checked out. We went to the vet last wednesday for a check up and they said we'd have to keep an eye on her for up to two months.

I hope it's just from running into something.

She might be a bit more prone to bruising because the ratsak will have thinned her blood - not much different to what warfarin/heparin/clexane does to people. I'm sure she will be fine, but definitely an idea to keep a closer eye on her till you can get her to the vet again.

Had her to the vet and he believes it is just pigmentation marks, as all of her other vitals were good. We have to keep an eye on them and if they change in anyway to get her back to the vet.

Phew....that's a good one to get checked out ASAP because dark spots that appear quickly can be a sign of internal bleeding. Glad the vet thinks it's just pigmentation. I hope everything turns out well.
