Only been doing it for a year...and havent for a few months due to morning sickness and then the heat... but I'm real into it =)

well she is sending me a troll that she wants to get as far as possible from where it was found and then hidden. I was going to do it for her (and said troll is on it's way) but I have been reading up about how to do it and am completely lost. Not to mention I have no access to GPS :lol:. So I was wondering if I could post the troll when it arrives and you could do with it whatever you do with these objects?
I could, I have a gps, I haven't hidden one before though, wanted some more finds under my belt, but I know how and am capable of doing it =) did she say if it needs to be put in a current cache, or in a brand new one?
she didn't specify but I guessed an existing location would be easier?
will depend. If it is part of a special event I can do it, or if its a travel bug I can do it and put it in someone elses cache. If not, I would have to make a new one.
I'll do it, just find out for me, because I don't want to intrude on someone elses cache, but if it is just a travel bug there is no point making a whole new one just for it.

=) no worries, Ive been trying to get out there and get into it again now its not melt your skin hot and I have a little bit of energy (before Spock takes up all my time =P ) so this will give me that real push and give me a real reason to get out there again
We do it Trav. Andrew has his own geo caches that he has hidden. He could put it in the middle of nowhere in one of his caches.

I do it too. I think I've found 300 and hidden about 5 or 6. I hide puzzle caches and they are devilishly hard :D.
guess she has a good variety of where it can go, I don't mind one of the other girls doing it, like I said I havent hidden any yet, cause I've been wanting to get more finds under my belt first. so I guess it depends how middle of no where she wants it ;)

Geocaching is like treasure hunting with a GPS. There are billions of containers hidden around the world, but various people and they then give you the GPS coords for where it is, and you have to find them =):
my fave description is "we use billion dollar satelites to find tuperware in the scrub" =)
DF and I have done it a few times - we've only found a a few local ones but it's something that we could really get into. I don't really know too much about the whole thing - the guys that DF works with are right into it too.

As Teirae said each of the containers are hidden. You could walk past a heap in the city every day and not know. We found a geo cache once that was a 44 gallon drum. That was a country one though LOL. Most of them have little prizes in them such as a match box car, key ring, whatever really. If you take something from the box though, you have to leave something behind for the next person.
There is also a log in each the caches that you have to sign to say you've been and then you come home and record it online on the Geocache website. Andrew's found 496 of them so far. It is a good thing to do when you're home bored with the kids on a weekend. If we do country ones we will find 6 or 8 in a day, but that will involve a lot of driving too.
To find them you do need a GPS and be a part of the Geocaching website. That way you can download co-ordinates.

Wow 6-8 in one day seems like a huge amount! We always just do one when we decide to go lol no wonder we only have a few under our belt. DD thinks its great and calls it treasure hunting - we let her replace and take a prize so she has a little treasure display happening lol.

A few of my UK friends are very into this but I don't have GPS so I have never given it a go. Maybe once I get a fancy phone I will introduce the kids to it, I think they would enjoy it.
yea you can get apps and use your gps on a smart phone. no where near as good as an actual gps though, (relies on phone service and internet connection so drops out and is very battery heavy), but they are handy to give it a go for a couple to see if it is worth you investing in a gps
My record is 19 on one day (just turned out to be embryo transfer day). I wanted to do something for me, something fun and relaxing to take my mind off things. It worked :D. I go caching alone every birthday and always nab 10+. 19 was power caching though, 2 hours, I was literally running.
What is the best way to start? Sounds really neat!
Jellyfish - sign up to the geocaching website and have a look around. To start with we found some really close to us and we hunting using our phones. If you have a smartphone you can download the app and use it without signing up if you wanna check it out first ;) good luck! You'll have to let us know how you go!!

did you sign up to the australian site? or the us one? US has more on it, and most of the listings on the aussie one, you have to view on the us one anyway, so its good to be signed to both. the US one doesn't have the aussie trig points on it too.:

Oh this is so fricken cool, there's decoding and everything! And one a 5 min drive away - SO EXCITED!
My boys would love to do this. Might price a GPS to see if it would be worthwhile getting one now.
Just had a look at the site and noticed there are quite a few around here. Might give it a go: sounds like something all of us will like. Is it possible to find some just with clues alone, or would that be too difficult?
it is pretty good, I started cause it got me going out doors and doing things I havent had to do for ages (like climb a tree!!) they have Terrain and difficulty ratings (1 = easiest, 5 = hardest), and different sizes...for me micros are a PITA and I never find them.
some you have to solve a puzzle to get the coords, others are just a simple these are the coords go nuts.
youll be surprised how many there are, they are EVERYWHERE!! (there is even one on the international space station!)

How do you become 'mates' on the sites Tairae? I haven't figured that bit out yet lol
if you find their profile, (so you need their user name) it comes up with a profile, and under heir name are 2 dot/star icons, one blue, one red. The blue adds them, the red deletes them.
Then on your task bar thing at the top under "my" down near the bottom is "mates" and it has them so you can see if they have done anything exciting =) like hidden a cache or found some
Chickened out of going this morning, I think I'll wait for the weekend and go with Professor. I've been telling him all about it, and he's as excited as I am - I'm sure he's imagining himself as Indiana Jones! :rofl:
I'm sure there's no law about wearing a fur fedora when geocaching. The whip might be slightly more problematic though, I imagine it could get caught when climbing over fences but you could be glad of it when swinging over streams and the like...
Yay!! finally broke my drought!!! only got 1 though, out of the 4 I chased... due to damn muggles (non cachers being in the area and able to see what you are doing and potientially get to the cache after you leave), and a fight with some fire ants that I came out second best =(
Glad to hear you got one Teirae! I have looked at a few around here and this weekend we try some of the quieter places to get the hang of it a little. There is one site I drive past every day but it is way too exposed for a first try; very tempting though :lol:.
We're covering this in my Maths tute at uni this week, it's interesting... but a little confusing.
