Placenta encapsulation is on the rise, more people are reading about it and more placenta encapsulators are popping up around the world, including Australia. Would you have your placenta encapsulated? What are your thoughts?

Definitely, and was intending to! Unfortunately I ended up birthing in hospital, and in the excitement of the moment, my placenta was forgotten about and was thrown away. My iron was shot after birth for a good few weeks, and my bleeding very heavy, I believe had I been taking my placenta the difference would have been phenomenal :)
I would except I want to have a lotus birth and I dont think you can do both.
I've read lots about eating the placenta in the past and TBH while I can understand the benefits, the idea of it is pretty gross to me I don't eat meat particularly either and it would I think be too much for me.
Someone, I think Teirae, started a thread a while back though about encapsulation and it sounds like there are some amazing benefits - helping beat PND being a huge appeal for me having gone through that with DD2. I think i've probably left it too late to organise anything for this pregnancy though but actually have it on my list of things to discuss with my OB next appt. Swallowing a tablet or two daily sounds like something I could definitely do.
I couldn't stomach the thought of it. I understand they're are benefits but as most other primates do not eat the placenta I find it strange that it is often represented as the natural thing to do? But to each their own :)

If I had someone prepare it for me, I would do it. But I can't imagine myself actually doing the process, with a newborn.

yes I've done it with ds2, so am taking them right now.I also have a placenta tincture.
I haven't told a great deal of people as the reaction from my family was bad enough.
it is the best thing I've even done. after being physically unwell, lacking in vitamins and suffering severe pnd with my previous two, Im happy to say I have none of that this time around. I feel a bond with my baby and it feels blissful.
I don't think the capsules are the only reason for this, I think he's birth played a huge role also.
I would recommend it to everyone.
eta- its not like taking a huge bite of raw meat! its dehydrated and crushed into powder then put in capsules. it looks like a vitamin and has no after taste.

It's not for me, but each to their own. The concerns I would have about sending into someone else to do is; 1. Is your the only placenta they are doing at the time and if not, how do they ensure there is no mixing or cross contamination, or, can they guarantee that the placenta you receive is yours. 2. Do they keep them before processing them in a safe and hygienic manner. 3. Do they add anything, like herbs or fillers, when they make them.

Perhaps adding a link to the original post so that people can have a read about it.
I think there is a lot of misconception that you birth the placenta, chop it up and down the hatch it goes.
Plus I think if people knew the benefits that can come from it, more would be open to it.
I am planning on doing it with Spocks placenta. I have a recipe for encapsulating it, but don't think I'll actually do that. My back up is to just freeze it and cut it into small tablet size pieces and take them like a tablet while frozen. I had trouble actually finding someone in my area to do it for me, so I would have to do it myself, and it will depend how I feel after giving birth if i do it properly or not.
I did start a thread not too long ago inquiring about it too.
and in my work as a midwife, I ALWAYS ask the mums and dads if they are intersted in their placenta and want to look at it and then if they want to keep it. Not one person has said yes to keeping it yet, but atleast they have to chance to.
I am rapidly becoming less sceptical about placenta encapsulation the more I learn about it. It's a moot point now because my baby growing days are over but I think I would definitely consider this if I did have another. I'm fairly certain I could prepare it myself too, it actually doesn't look difficult.
Nope, I was not at all interested in my placentas.
Yes I wish I had of and had I had a third child, would have.

If I had another baby, I would definitely try it. I don't think I could do it myself though, I would need someone to do it for me. But I would take them due to the health benefits it's supposed to give new mummas.
With all of my pg and births, I have had Antenatal/ Postnatal depression, I have hemorrhaged after birth, requiring blood transfusions in two of my births and I was borderline with the other, and been fairly badly anaemic. So taking encpsulated palcenta would likely really help me, considering it worked as it should! And if not, it wouldn't hurt me!
I definitely would have it encapsulated given the chance :) But eating it raw or cooked like meat, as some people do, makes me a little queasy. I'd rather have it covered in something when it's in my mouth, then start its magic once it hits my stomach :lol:
I definitely will when the next baby comes along, just need to find someone in Perth that does it!
It's powdered and put inside a capsule, not gross at all to me :D
And like Teirae, if all else fails I will chop it up and freeze it, and swallow whilst frozen.

I'm definitely doing this for my next baby (the one we're not planning to have)! My m/w told us about how she did it for another client and it made sense to me.
She steams it, dries it and then encapsulates it.
I think it's a better use of the placenta than planting it, which we did this time.
With Elly we had homeopathic pillules made up in 2 strengths that could be used on myself or her as required. They definitely made a difference to her when she was inconsolably cranky, within minutes she'd have calmed down and be all settled again, worked miracles! Seemed to wear off after about 6 months though.
we also chopped up the remainder of the placenta into tablet sized pieces and froze them to swallow whole if post-natal depression ever really sunk in. But I never needed them, so they are still in the freezer today. I really need to plant them into a special tree or something.
Worth doing if you have the opportunity, even if you never use it, at least it's there "just in case". You can always plant a special flower or tree with them. I'm thinking a hydrangeas plant in memory of my mother and grandparents for Elly's placenta

I never even thought to actually look at the placenta back then, but really wish I had. What an awsome organ
I'm kicking myself I didn't do this! I was vegetarian and thought I'd be too icked out to eat meat so I'd just take more supplements if needed!! :wall: What an idiot. The most ethical meat I'll ever find (I made it myself!) and FAR superior to artificial supplements.
I know better now and I'll absolutely have some next time.
My m/w takes it and prepares it immediately after the birth, in her own kitchen. She doesn't have more than one birth at a time, so no 1 is not an issue (can't be in two places at once!). There's not exactly a huge demand for it either.:
For 2, it's taken straight from Mum's body into a freezer pack and into the freezer for preparation as soon as she's rested or it's daylight (obviously Mum will need it ASAP).
3. I've not asked about adding anything, but I'm guessing no. My m/w is a naturopath and if you wanted extra stuff you'd get a separate remedy I guess.
No. Humans haven't evolved as placenta eating mammals and I tend to try and eat in a way that makes sense from an evolutionary perspective.
My MW did it for me last time, not capsules but tiny frozen pieces i took with juice. Hopefully this MW will do it for me, or I'll put me brave pants on and do it myself.
i say no way, because honestly the thought of what it actually is i just couldnt get past that.
But i think its great. if you can get past what is actually in the capsule.
i agree with some though, IF i ever did it(prepare it) i would do it myself.
Thanks to a referral from the lovely Loulabelle I now have this organised for this bub. No way I could do it myself - way too icky. Pretty hypocritical probably but so gross. Everything I've read suggests its a really great thing, especially for those prone to PND like I am. If swallowing a few capsules keeps me from going down a very dark road again then I'll deal with the ick factor.
Funnily enough, I was telling my Mum today that I was doing this - fully expecting her to give me one of those "oh my, what nonsense are you thinking of now" looks. She was really encouraging and said that its probably no worse an "ingredient" that a whole heap of vitamins and medications we take already. Given I injected myself with another pregnant woman's urine for three months I think she's pretty right!

Yeah that. You would have to present me with some solid peer reviewed scientific findings (from RCT's) with significant findings before I would do something like eat my placenta.:
I didn't know about it but I wish I had. Can't say for sure I would have done it, but i would definitely have been intereseted in learning more about it.
Having read a couple of accounts of lotus birth though, it would have been a toss up which way to go... and I'd probably lean towards a lotus birth.

Do those against it realise that you're not sitting down at the table with a slice of raw placenta?
Are you aware that the placenta in dried (just like you would your fruits or beef jerky), sliced in small pieces and then put into ingesitable capsules?
I just think there is some confusion about the actual ingestion.
I'm not trying to push the subject either way, just clarifying :)

Yes I know what encapsulation is... no I still wouldn't do it without some solid evidence.
