How long did you share a room with your baby/child?

With my first we shared a room for 6 months before moving him into his own room, many reasons but mostly I thought that was the done thing :D

This time around, am hoping to keep Buster in with us for as long as we can but am curious as to how this works as they get older? Was there a point where you had to creep around and not make much noise? What age did your kids go into their very own room?

Did they move in with a sibling? How did this work? Hoping the boys might be able to share a room if Buster continues to sleep well.

With DS it was an on/off thing as we tried not to co-sleep :lol: - he was in his own bed by 2
DD is still in with me at 16 months

Ds is 17 months and in our room. We have a double bed that dh and ds co sleep in and a single that I sleep in.

We are in the process of transitioning ds into the single and then hopefully into his own room at around Christmas.

DD is 10 months and in with me, also in my bed. No idea when she'll move. Maybe when the baby comes, but maybe not. I have no clue, haven't thought that far ahead yet :p

Thanks for the replies girls, no one I know IRL co sleeps at all so feeling like the odd one out! I'd like him in with us for at least a year, lucky we have a king but don't think I could squeeze a single in here unfortunately!

PZ - you made me lol, I have an awful habit of thinking way too far ahead.

My first part coslept and part in cot in my room till 18months, second same as first but more often my bed her dad left when she was 6 months. Booth own rooms at around 2. Third dd coslept or in hammock/cot in our room till 20 months then her too. When we moved house, she still came into our bed every night till close on three when she stopped bf.

DD1 slept in our room, initially in our bed, later in her cot till she was 18 months old. We just followed her lead. She made it quite clear that she no longer wanted to co-sleep in bed with me at around 6 months. When we transferred her to her own room at 18 months, she was absolutely fine from the first night and I've been using any excuse to try and get her to sleep with me ever since :)

It's really been musical beds with DD2 (both DP and I have co-slept with her but in different rooms) but now she is in her 'own' room so I start the night in my bedroom then go into her room if she wakes up (which she usually does at some point during the night). I have a double bed in there so transfer her from her cot to the bed and co-sleep with her if and when she wakes. She's 20 months old. DD1 thinks she's missing out and is now insisting on sleeping in the cot with DD2 which, after my initial hesitation, I'm cool with. DD1 could sleep for Australia so I'm hoping that she'll teach DD2 how to sleep. DD2 has been sleeping better (and sometimes right through) with DD1 in with her.

We're still bedsharing at 13 months, I don't think that'll ever stop :rofl:

My parents bedshared with all three of us early on, and I think we had our own beds from about 3ish, but we were always welcome in their bed (with fair warning!) until we grew out of needing help to sleep :) My mum used to lay next to both my brothers in their beds until they was asleep up until about five or six. She probably did that with me too but I don't remember.

Reading that, it seems like my parents are super-duper AP parents lol - they're not, really, my mum's just a big softy and loves us to death :heartbeat:

DS slept in our room until 7 or so months (in a portacot or our bed) when he started waking up and deciding if he could see us we should all get up and play... we then moved him to his own room and the proper cot. this time around i think we will do the same, when we start disturbing each other we will put bub in with DS (mainly cos our spare room is DH workshop :LOL:) bubs in the cot and DS hopefully have already been transitioned into a single....

First one 4 months. Second probably 4 weeks. Both my kids were anti co-sleepers no matter how hard we tried LOL!

But they come in for cuddles now, and both of the kids will happily snuggle up to each other when they can't sleep which is equally cute. So it's all good.

Miss G was in the bassinet next to our bed for about 3 weeks, and her sleep patterns were terrible. Moved her into her cot in her own room and she slept great. Now she sleeps in the portacot next to my bed when dh is on nights or has mates over late but otherwise she has always been happier in her own room! I initially thought 3 weeks was way too young for her to be on her own but that's how she liked it :)

DD1 was in my bed until 2 and then in her own bed in our room until almost 3 when she got her own bedroom. We never felt we had to creep around, especially when she was in her own bed. Now DD2 is in bed with us and there was a brief overlap of all 4 of us in the bedroom! We moved her to her own bedroom when she started regularly sleeping through and because we wanted to avoid the baby's night stirring, waking up the toddler. Worked brilliantly for us.

We plan to move DD2 in with DD1 when she is sleeping through regularly. I imagine it will go well, DD1 already asks when they can share a room often and I think DD2 will find having DD1 close comforting. I think she will sleep through sooner than DD1 did (already does 7hr stretches which DD1 didn't do till around 2 lol) but still thinking it will be in a year or two.

DS still doesn't sleep in his own room (he's 4). We co-slept for about 3 years and now he likes to sleep on the lounge.. He really doesn't like his room at all (think I know why) but can't change anything around without it being too much of a PITA (SO much stuff in his room and the other room). He may not even sleep in there if we did change it all around anyway so :dunno:

We're hoping to move this year anyway so once we move, he'll hopefully sleep in his room..

Ds cosleeps with us at 9mo. We have no plans to stop yet, and no set time in the future when we want to either. I would like to read his cues and move him when he's ready, but I also want that to be after this winter at the very earliest. We live in an old style house with no insulation and it gets very cold. We have a fireplace but I just don't know if he would be warm enough all on his own. We bought a beautiful cot when I was pregnant and have it set up as a super fun play area that ds can go to if we need to leave him for a few minutes.

DS is 2 and 9 months and sil in our room (because we only have one room.) and climbs in with us every night around 3am.
We're hopefully moving soon, then he'll have his own room. Not sure how that will go...

Ds was in his own room from 9 months but i still coslept with him until he was about 21 months. He got croup just after he turned 2 & then slept with us for a few more weeks before deciding he wanted to go back to his own bed. He goes through phases where he'll jump in with us during the night.

Dd is in a bassinet next to our bed at the moment. After ds' horrendous sleeping, im keen to set the cot up as a sidecar to the bed but dp isnt keen.

DD co slept on and off until she was 3, DS1 until he was 2 1/2ish and DS2 is still co sleeping full time with me. The bigger kids do still come in to me or DH (we sleep in different beds because he doesn't like to co sleep with the baby! Plus he needs to sleep so he can work). But it's not every night anymore. DS1 will come in maybe 3ish times a week, and DD maybe 1-2 times a week. Sometimes I have all 3 kids in the bed, more often I end up with just DS2 in there. They all start out in their own beds. I'm hoping one morning I might wake up to discover all 3 of them stayed int heir own beds!

With DD it was under 1, because like you, that what we thought people did. It sucked.
DS was 2 but he still comes in regularly at 3.
DD2 has her cradle next to the bed and that's the way it will stay....even though her 'room' is my study that is directly off my room and her cradle would only be maybe 1 metre further away lol.

Still in with me in my bed (king size) at 2 years old. No idea when that will change...but bound to one day!

Still in our room at almost 3. Day sleeps in her room. But overnight in ours. She sometimes wakes, and our house us very long between our room and hers, do its easier having her with us. We thought about trying to move her but meh, it works for us.

We don't exactly creep around. We always have music on, we talk in hushed tones. But we do that when she isn't there too cos we deem the bedroom a quiet relaxing place...

Our first son we had his cot in our room and he started the night in there, then came into our bed. At about 14 months we moved house and couldn't fit the cot so we put him in the room across the hall and had both doors open but technically he wasn't in our room anymore. He still came into our bed when he woke up. He started sleeping though at about 19 months old so he was in his room full time from then on. Now if he wakes we resettle him back in his bed.

Youngest baby has had the same drill and is now 16 months old with his cot in our room but spends most the night in bed with us.

We totally creep around and whisper and keep the lights off.

DD slept in her bassinet in our room until she was 4 months old, then converted into the portacot and she stayed there until she was 7 months old. She wasn't waking for feeds, just waking up restless and I realised DH's snoring was waking her up, so we put her in her own room. For a few weeks she slept through, but then started wanting to come into bed with us, so she'd start in her own bed and then come in with us later. This kept going until January this year and now she sleeps through in her own room.

DD has been in and out of my room/bed but it's usually been dependent on living situation

She is 6 now and has her own room but often sleeps in with me (especially when her diabetes is playing up as then I just roll over to sort her out)

This little one has a corner in my room set up but were only in a 2 bedroom house, so again it's due to living situation. I we end up here for years I may put them both in my room as its bigger and have the smaller room (DD is all for this as well!)

First one - 10 days. We weren't sleeping well, newborn grunty noises keeping us awake. DS's bedroom was right next door so just kept both doors open. No regrets at all!

This one, probably the night we get home from hospital and then he/she will go into its own room.

With DD we co-slept for ages (months but can't remember how many). Funny thing is I didn't even know it was a "concept". I just did it because I liked the snuggling. She then went into a cot in my room. She stayed there until my ex and I split. Then it was back in mummy's bed. She was two. I think we both needed it. I met DP six weeks or so later...
Then she moved into her own room gradually because...uuummmm...well, you know....;)

DD was in out of the bassinet and into her cot in her room at around 3 months..
Its only been in the last 12 months or so that every now and then she'll end up in our bed at some stage through the night..
but when i broke my arm 2 months ago, she would sleep in my bed (for a few reasons) and now that my arms better and eveything is back to "normal" we are in the process of getting her back in her own bed..

let me add, when DH is away (works FIFO) i LOVE having her in my bed, but when hes home there just isnt enough room lol, plus its hard to have "our" time with a toddler sprawled across your bed..

oh and to answer about lights etc.. no, we have lamps on either side of the bed, will turn one on if we have to (im a master at walking around in the dark.. DH on the other hand though...) we dont yahoo and carry on, its pretty much like normal.. probably used a little more hushed tones than normal, but no lip reading or anything LOL. shes a pretty heavy sleeper like her father..

DS was in our room and we used varying degrees of co-sleeping for 12 months (in our bed/side-cot thingy), now he's in his own room but we co-sleep in our bed from the first/second wake up. It works for us, cos we still get to read in bed at the beginning of the night, and still get family snuggles in the morning :)

DD1 was in a cradle next to our bed for probably 2 months. Then we moved her out into the family room (next door room to ours). She moved upstairs to her own bedroom around a month later. She was sleeping really well through the night and her noises were waking me.

DD2 slept on me in our bed for probably 7 months. Not what I wanted but the only way she, and therefore I, could get any sleep.

This baby we'll play by ear. I plan on having her in a hammock next to our bed for a while at least. I like having them right next to me in the beginning and also want to minimise middle of the night disruptions for DDs 1 and 2. That's the plan anyway - which probably means none of it will happen!

All these mamas & babies sleeping together makes me happy ((^_^)) we also fell into it & for a while it felt like we were the odd ones out for doing it. We transition from bed to bedside cot to kids bedroom by about 6-8 mths. Also we Used a tea tree snuggle bed for DD but DS is too chunky for it :)

14 weeks in the bassinett next to us but I thought she'd sleep better in her own room, still in the bassinette. Now DD is 4.5 yo and still comes into bed with us most nights. She starts in her room but ends up walking down on her own anytime from midnight. Most times she sleeps through without a problem unless she is unwell then she is a nightmare to sleep with!

With DS we first had him in a bassinett next to our bed, then his cot in our room. At 6.5 months we moved him into his own room. He wasn't sleeping well, and for some reason I thought moving him to his own room would help. Couldn't have been more wrong! :wall: DS was a horrid sleeper and I lost a lot of sleep by having him in a separate room. He is in his own room now though, and sleeps through almost every night.

Having learnt what I did from DS, I decided to co-sleep with DD. First she was in a bassinet next to our bed, but she didn't always sleep in it - she often ended up in bed with us. When she got too big for the bassinet we turned the cot into a sidecar cot and it has been wonderful. DD doesn't actually sleep in the cot very much, but it gives us that little bit of extra room and I don't have to worry about DH rolling onto her. DD turns one in a couple of weeks and I can't see her moving into her own room anytime soon. Co-sleeping has saved me a lot of sleep, and until DD is sleeping through (or at least sleeping longer than 3 hour stretches) she'll be staying snuggly close next to me :).

DS2 - turned 2 last week & still snuggling up every night. He loses it if I'm not there, even if I am there but not holding/feeding him he loses it. I'm just keeping the faith that most 15yo's aren't still snuggling with mum and eventually he'll want his own space. DS1 is with us most nights, and he's going to be 5 soon. DS1 only started to do the co-sleeping thing since DS2 was born though. And now DH has decamped to DS1's bed, to get a better night's sleep. Which secretly works for all of us, cos he can snore like a freight train ;)

We still end up with the 3 youngest DD's in the bed with us most nights. We bought a king size bed but DF still ends up smooshed on the edge of the bed :) DD4 is nearly 1 and sleeps with us every night

Dd stayed on our room til 4y1m ish, in toddler bed, until she moved to her own room and get double bed so I'm not much help.

I would think if you're planning on moving her, keeping "her" bed with her would be a good move so at least some things are familiar kwim?

thats what i though BG, better than going 'backwards' and moving her into the cot...

from the rest of this thread it seems 16months is about average. I thought it would have been at the young end. (your girl BG obviously pulling the average up =) )

We ended up moving DD1 into her own room at about 15 months, we took the cot off the side of our bed and had it with one side off like a toddler bed. Then at around 17 months we bought her a double bed :) she still wakes through the night, but DH will go in to her and will end up cosleeping with her in there.

DD2 is 9.5 months and is in bed with us. We're hoping to transition her into DD1's bed anywhere between 16-24 months (basically when she and DD1 are ready).

dd moved to a king single bed in her own room at 18 months. ds got his single bed (in room with dd) at 12 months, but still visits us most nights at 20 months. Hope to have ds more consistent in his bed by 2 years when #3 is due.
