I'm watching where I'm driving these days. $1.55 a litre, big 4WD and its not pretty at fill up time.
when i first got my license, I remember refusing to pay over $1/L!! and it was do able, I just might have had to go to a 2nd petrol station, but I could get away with it.
and then one day i had to pay $1.12!! and I had the biggest whinge!!!
now I NEVER see anything under $1.50... =( it really is crazy!
I usually pay upwards of $1.69 per litre which means I'm paying around $100 per week to fill!
It's ridiculous the price, and it's only set to rise :(

We are thinking of ugrading our family car this year and good fuel consumption is first on the 'must have' list.
Sigh...and I remember working in a petrol station back when you could get it for 60.9/L

When I first started driving petrol was around 50c a litre - boy I'm showing my age now ;-):
Yeah I remember when I first started to drive I can remember filling up at aroun 59cents on a good day and then a bad day would be high 60's max! Then I remember it getting to 80c/L and thinking I was being ripped off! LOL!
Wish those days were back. We have a toyota kluger so it is a 4wd but not a huge one IYKWIM. I seriously was waiting for the little petrol indicator to move up when I restarted the car and while it did move up a little, the petrol light stayed on! $20 doesn't go far now!
In the uk (jersey) we pay £1.18 a litre. I only have to fill up once a month though. It's interesting finding out what goes on with prices in oz.
thats not always worth the $$:
once the cost of LPG goes over 80c its not worth it. esp. if you're going longer trips. we have duel fuel cars and DH is doing 700km p.w and its cheaper to run on petrol then gas.
once you add on the extra stress on the engine and the conversion plus gas wont give you the millage of petrol. its not a huge saving. diesel would be a cheper alterative to LPG. (well so DH has told me) so when we get a new car it'll be diesel. or ideally diesel-electric if they ever make them.
I used to have LPG. I refused to pay over 50c a litre. I don't pay attention to the price of it these days.
We pay $1.59 here for regular. In the closest bigger town (still a tiny town :lol:) its $1.64. For being so isolated, our prices aren't too bad.
I remember feeling ripped off if I paid over 70 cents a litre:

Our petrol budget is $50 per fortnight. That's why ride our bikes pretty much everywhere!
Ours is $2.25/L at the moment (NZ). It costs a fortune to keep our cars running. Actually, we are about to move into town because we are spending about $120 per week just going to kindy/work.
I think it's awesome that people are looking at ways to save their fuel consumption due to rising petrol prices. Petrol should be $2 a litre with the surplus going to environmental causes just to help encourage people to use less of it.

I disagree with that. how can we use less when the cost of living is already though the roof? the farmers have to pay $2p/l how will they keep their farms going? then the cost of living will go up and sadly the world we live in dose not allow the ease of home grown food.:
I think that the goverment should be looking into alernate forms of engery. if you want to watch a movie on cars useing alertnat energy look up the movie "who killed the eletric car" and see that its goverment greed thats stalled everything. we need cars, trucks ect. but i think wanting the price of petrol to hit $2 is harsh. i live out of town and if it hit that much - DH would only be working to pay the elect. bill. and we would struggle with any thing beyond that.
I understand where you're coming from Meow. And in the cities that'd be one thing. But in the country where people can be travelling 100kms twice a day for work, there goes around half the average weekly pay.
Public transport isn't available everywhere & sometimes simply biking or legging it just is not feasable. How would those of us outside the city survive? I struggle to take my kids anywhere as it is beacuse of petrol prices. I'm 300 kms from the nearest shopping centre. Thats a 600km round trip. I can only afford to get there every month or 2 as it is, so I'm paying around twice what I could pay for every day groceries. In a big family car its $80 - $100 in petrol down there & back. Another 50c a litre in petrol & it'd be costing me around $140 - $150.
ETA - Just thought I would mention that there are alot of people out here in the country who do car pool. More than you'd think. Trying to save their cars & their money.
I also disagree with this. Whilst investing in environmental research and developing fuel alternatives is something the government should be doing, funding it by increasing the fuel excise will simply result in the prices of nearly everything else increasing as well as production and transport costs get passed on to the consumer.:
