As a little girl, I did Brownies (now Girl Guides) and my brother did Scouts. I'm considering putting my DD into something but can't decide between Girl Guides and Scouts. Girl Guides they can join at 5, Scouts at 6. The Scouts have more suitable times/days for us.
So, what did you pick and why?
I was in girl guides because mum wanted me to interact with girls more outside of netball, i was more into footy & cricket so she thought it would help even it out a bit :rofl:

No HotI :( They changed them all to Girl Guides several years ago now. But some "Troops" still name the different age groups by the original names (Gumnuts, Brownies etc). The local group I'm looking at for DD still call the 5-6 year olds Gumnuts but another local group calls them something else (which I think might be similar to a six name). And they all wear the same uniform now as well. Remember how Gumnuts had one uniform, Brownies had the brown dress, Guides had the blue skirt and top? Well now they all just wear jeans and the blue Girl Guide top!
We've been thinking about this for DD1 as well. Only DP wants her to go into Cubs.
I never did anything like that but he did. I just want her to have the opportunity to mix with other kids and make new friends in the community outside her school (only 17 kids in the whole school).
Do you know if they still have Cubs? If so, are the ages the same State to State?

No problem Sara! They still do Cubs but you have to be 7 to join. Joeys is 6-7yrs, Cubs 8-10yrs
NO BROWNIES? THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL OUTRAGE. I'M CALLING THE UN RIGHT NOW.

I was a guide for many years.
My sisters were and are still heavily involved in the scouting movement.
Guides seem to be a dying breed to me, so I'd go with the Joeys.
My sister used to be the district Joey leader and is the director of a large scouting and guiding musical- maybe you and DD would like to come along?

My two are both in Scouts thanks to Bear Grylls lol and they love it. They have an amazing leader who is retiring at the end of the month which sucks - you are at the whim of the leaders though. Some don't seem nearly as organised or do as many activities. But they have weekend camps which they love, clean ups at the river followed by fish and chips, hikes, learn how to survive in the bush, cook, make so many cool things - been really super impressed! They learn so many life skills and the importance of helping others, being a good person, respect and care. Wish I got them into it sooner :) Been about 6 weeks I think so far and so happy.

Excuse my excitement guys- but I have such great memories of my time in guides.

You get to pick what camps they go on or not - there is the weekly stuff then weekend stuff that is additional and you can pay for. They had an amazing time, slept on renovated trains in the Dandenongs then went to the shark and stingray centre down that way and swam with them! Mine are 7.5 and 10 though :)

This is the tintookie badge. In our brownies group there were 4 groups or 'sixes' and ours was called the tintookies. wierd the things you remember, eh?
Mine was the 'quokkas'
Now sixes are called patrols and patrol leaders :)

My cousin is in Rangers and has been in the Scouting movement since he was 6. He has had such an amazing time and I want DD to have a bit of that.
What state are you in Sara?
Should be a small yearly fee, smaller weekly fee and then extra for the bigger weekend excursions.
Some of the camps can be expensive.

Ok, showing my age. I remember when you paid subs each week of...wait for it...$2! I wonder what it is now? Sara, can you let us know when you find out?
My cousin has done some amazing things with Scouts. He will be going to the snow for the second time in 2 years next month. They bus it to the Grampians from SA then hike into the Chalet and do stuff there. Last year they were lucky it snowed the day before they arrived so could ski in but it was a close call! In Summer he went to Tasmania.
I think I'm sold on Scouts...

Locally, it seems the joeys/cubs/scouts have a larger following - probably because it's now both genders.
Emma09, we were heavily involved in Strzelecki Showtime for many years - we went to see the Camberwell version a couple of times (went to Gang Show more though)
Mother Goose - there are a fair few! More boys than girls but still there are other girls there for sure. I think times are changing though and girls are really getting into this stuff. My daughter loves camping and the outdoors.
Yeah - there are lots of girls in my Cousin's Troop (probably too many for my Aunt and Uncle's liking ;) ) and I'm not worried about DD holding her own. More that I want her to mix with boys AND girls. I guess that's a little of why I'm not so sure about Guides?

i was in it from 91 to 96 i think - i was doing year 12 in 97 so didn't go in the show that year - i did ticket sales with mum though and front of house/kiosk stuff as well
my brother was in it from it's 21st show so either 88 or 89 - can't recall for sure! i just know it was the 21st year cos one of his performances had three newbies in their first year, and three of the older peeps involved in their 21st show lol
I didn't do brownies - cos brown wasn't my colour but I was a guide and went to the Asia Pacific Jamborella where there were scouts and guides. How risque!
My DD went to scouts first but we swapped her over to guides early on. The scouts seemed to be more about activities organized by others, but guides seems to have more of an emphasis on community and contribution and positive life values. DDs now a pack leader and intends to hang around for a while yet, so I would recommend guides.

Depends on the child too. My daughter is very hands on, outdoorsy and adventurous, she's gotten bored and quit so many things. But never seen her so into something before. The camps are a massive draw card for her too, they go to some really cool places. We live near a military base and one activity we just missed out on was light plane rides at the base! Only $50 each and a day out they would never forget. Its not that exxy every activity, some are very cheap, but they have so many cool options and chances to do things other kids wouldnt.
My DH is a head scout leader so naturally my kids do scouts (joeys and cubs) DD will be going up to scouts soon. The reason DH became a leader was because I am ultra paranoid lol and DD wanted to do cubs and I feel better knowing he knows all the leaders, can go to any camp and be there for the kids. They feel special too. And I'm sure it will be a part of their lives they will always cherish.
Where I did the whole scout/guide thing, the guides are now pretty lame. Numbers are dwindling, so they're struggling for leaders, so the activities just aren't as good.
I say Scouts, for that reason.
I was also a Showtime tragic.
I met my DH through Scouts :redface: We are such nerds... :D
Also, I was a Joey leader for a while, I took my Joeys camping once a year.
