Ear infection?

Tonight DD started complaining that her ear hurt. She gets very tired on Fridays and generally when she's tired she complains all sorts of things hurt... When she had a chest infection a few weeks ago I think she learned the power of telling mummy that something hurts or she feels sick.

Eg she ran around for 2.5hrs at a play centre this morning then when we left told me that she felt sick all of a sudden :rolleyes:

Anyway, tonight she decided she wanted to go to bed on her own, before the Barbie movie had finished, telling me her head and her ear really hurt. I didn't think too much of it, put her down and she went off to sleep.

But 20 mins later she was awake crying that her ear hurt. This went on for 30mins or so - she'd wake and cry, tell me her ear hurt, I'd soothe her to sleep, repeat 5-10mins later.

Ended up giving her some panadol, eventually she has stopped crying.

She's never had an ear infection but I used to get them, so she might be headed down the same genetic path :(

Is there any way I can get some idea without taking her to the GP? Of course I will if I need to, but what signs should I look out for?

She doesn't seem feverish. The ear pain thing is the only thing, coupled with the crying tonight. Normally on Friday nights she craaaashes and doesn't stir.

I will of course keep an eye on her tomorrow but I'm concerned about swimming - lesson first thing. Hmm.

DD1 is exactly the same! That kid knows the sickness card will always work! ;)
But a couple of months ago, she was telling me her ear hurt on and off for about 10 days. I finally took her to the GP when she woke up crying one morning and couldn't stop tugging on it. :( Poor thing. Ear infection and the GP gave her some ABs.
If she tells you she can't sleep on it, or she is pulling on it, putting her fingers in it, complaining she can't hear properly or you notice she is getting any other symptoms, I would take her, but given it is the weekend, I would take her tomorrow if you can get an appointment.

Ear infections can cause fever and balance issues/dizziness.
Ear, nose and throat are all linked up. When DS1 has an ear infection he often ends up with a yucky throat which causes smelly breath.

Haven't noticed balance issues. She is awake again, more crying.

Every time l go in, she's lying on the ear that she said hurts. I've been rolling her over onto the other side and that seems to help, she tells me it feels better.

It's not sounding good :(

Do you have a wheat pack? When I was a child I got dreadful ear infections and my Mum used to warm up heat packs for my sore ears and they always helped a bit.

As you know DD2 has had many many ear infections.....she rarely gets a temp. DD1 had one a few weeks back, complained of an ear ache and had a temp, if you have nurofen give her that too.

Buster had a very bad ear infection last month...no symptoms except for a cough. It's hard when you're not sure! Poor little miss, hope she feels better tomorrow.

ETA - just remembered that the few Moo has had, first thing I noticed was he wasn't eating and had a sore throat, plus a temp.

Argh Hestia she was saying her throat hurt too! And didn't eat dinner!

Thanks olive - I know you have an unfortunate wealth of knowledge in this area :( I'll try some neurofen if she wakes enough soon. Or that should probably be "when" she wakes.

I've got a hottie - one of them wheat pack things from when being pregnant and labouring. Might see if I can dig that out...

Have you got any essential oils in the house? If you have tea tree or lavender oil, you can mix 3-2 drops of each with a bit of vegetable oil, soak a cotton ball in it and use it to plug the ear. you can use the same blend to massage around the ear area and on the cheek, then you put the warm compress on the area afterwards.

Fortunately LS my GP doesn't take bookings for Saturdays until 9am on Saturday! So I'll be ringing at 9. DH will be doing swimming I'd say on his own with the boyo. Me and DD might be off to GP.

No essential oils :(

poor thing, my boytwin suffers from ear infections when he doesn't have grommets in. I usually notice when he starts falling over all the time because his balance goes first and he rarely complains of pain. Did you manage to get her into the GP today?

No we didn't - she was fine this morning! The neurofen must have helped - she didn't wake again thank goodness. And morning she was happy as Larry.

I asked her several times if she felt ok and she said yes. She's been good! Having a sleep at the moment. See how we go tonight.

We get them a lot. It can be worse at night. We don't always get temperatures. Often I notice more crying at night, off his food but no other symptoms. Oh, sometimes the ear is more waxy than usual. Usually we get them when he is snotty. Panadol or nurofen helps at night. The Drs don't always prescribe ABs, usually they do if it doesn't go away reasonably quick by itself. My DS ear infections are always prolonged so we always end up with ABs.

We too are ear problem veterans. My DS1 gets bad ear infections and so did my DD when she was smaller, and DS2 has had his first two infections this winter :( . With DS1, I took him to the doc a few weeks ago after he'd been consistently complaining of sore ears, and the Dr told me in a rather blase manner that yes, his ear is badly infected, but never mind when the drum bursts, it will provide relief for him :o Needless to say he went onto AB's and we are seeing the ENT for further treatment.

I know this is after the fact, but I would say that if she was consistently complaining, as well as it waking her, then it would be a real pain, not a made up one. I can usually tell that DS1 has real pain when he can't leave his ear alone. He tugs it, it goes red and he pokes it alot. He also gets smelly breath and doesn't eat much. His behavior gets bad too.

I'm glad your DD is better now. Ear problems suck.
