Infant baggage allowances

Ok, not sure if I'm being dopey but how do you understand this:

Does this mean that when we travel dd can have 3 items for herself, or because we are traveling domestically she has nothing? It seems to contradict itself? Help!

I think the baggage allowance is in addition to the 3 infant items. So they are saying if you fly domestically you can't take a suitcase for the infant, just the 3 infant items.

That's how I read that too. So you would have to put their other items in your baggage.

You are always allowed the three baby items :)

So if it's international baby get's her own suitcase allowance plus 3 items eg. (stroller, porta-cot, car seat) if it's domestic you have to pack baby's things with your own but can still take the items.

yep, what Meow said. Though I just flew qantas Syd to AS and because I only had a stroller (hired everything else in Syd) they let me check in a bag for her at no additional cost (which I had offered to pay) even though the flight was full.

It's best to ring the airline for clarification. Get the name of the person you spoke to and make a note of it and the date.

I actually interpret it as no baggage allowance in Australia. So all you can carry is carry-on for yourself and maybe 3 baby items. If you are flying OS you can carry on 10kg for yourself plus your baby items.

I've been known to pack a bit of my own stuff into the carry bag for our hammock ;)

on domestic flights in OZ, with Virgin you can take up to 10kg of baby items (pram/porta cot/car seat etc) per adult travelling with a baby that has paid to check in luggage
jetstar we could take 2 baby items as long as we had paid to check in bags

international with them both is the saem, im not sure on qantas

It's qantas. We really only have to take the pram...pity they won't allow a bag... Would have thought that would take less space.

I'm sure you can take bags as per the adult baggage allowance, just not an extra bag for the infant. They usually allow 2 pieces of carry on for people with infants too.

Domestically an infant does not get a baggage allowance for carry on as they have not paid for a seat. International they get 10kgs.

you could check in 2 bags for you, and have one packed for baby.

as long as you dont go over the weight limit it shouldnt be a issue. never was when i was working for VB

I have always carried an extra carry on bag for my baby with qantas.

We travelled a lot domestically with DS prior to him turning two - with Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar. We found Virgin and Qantas to be very accomodating, but once got stung with a $200 excess baggage charge from Jetstar - haven't flown with them since

We've always taken 2 suitcases for the three of us, and just been mindful of the weight limits since our Jetstar experience. You can basically take a pram/stroller, Car Seat and Port-a-cot for free if you want to, and all the airlines have allowed us three pieces of cabin baggage - eg one each for me and DH's paid tickets, plus a baby bag

I recently rang Virgin to clarify their policy because we are flying with the kids later this year. They told us we could take 3 big items per infant (so things like pram, stroller, car seat etc), and that I could also take an extra carry on bag for each infant as well. So I can do that for both the littlies who are "infants" and under 2, but my DS who is 3 just gets his carry on bag. With the tickets we bought you have to pay extra for any luggage you want to check in, so we just bought a couple of check in luggages for a few of the adults to take all our luggage in.

Just to hijack the thread slightly, but I was wondering if anyone had flown with a Baby Jogger City Select before? Or any pram that folds apart into three pieces (the body and two seats)? Did you just take it as the three pieces, or did you have to get it tied together or wrapped up somehow? I've only flown with my single pram that folded up with the seat still attached.

See now this is why the only infant item I take traveling is my chosen wrap. ;) It's all too confusing!

Can you possibly organise someone to lend you what you need at the other end? Sometimes it's cheaper to hire than pay excess baggage too.

Can you get a travel bag for the City Select? A good investment to protect your pram!

I would Mylitta (get a travel bag for the pram), I've never taken my good pram on the plane, just a fold up stroller. A good friend had her pram totally trashed by the virgin baggage handlers, they reimbursed her after a lot of too-ing and fro-ing but painful at the time
