My magnificent moustache

Ok, it turns out that along with all the other crap involved with being somewhat menopaus-ish, is you can grow yourself a pretty magnificent moustache.

Yes ladies, and it's not even November.

So I've finally got the courage to come out of my own denial and have decided I need to do something about my furry top lip. I get my eyebrows waxed and the lady there suggested she could do the lip as well, but it sounds ouchy, and plus I need to start tweezing my eyebrows a week after I get them waxed and I can't really afford to be getting the lip waxed every week/fortnight for the rest of my life.

Any suggestions? What do you do?

IPL laser hair removal for just your top lip?

ETA: Due to it being a small area, it would not be too expensive and possibly could be done in two sessions.

I think you could wax it at home. It's not like the brows where if you make a mistake it's a total disaster - no-one is going to notice that you took off a bit too much moustache on one side and made your mo uneven. You could try the Nads wand because it doesn't need heating or anything and it comes with mo sized strips.

Or you could shave it and use some rogaine on the area to encourage it. One of my friends has a fake moustache and she looks rather dashing :p

Get it done, eyebrow and lip, will cost about $20 and it stings, it is the most ouchie area I have found for me to get waxed, but only hurts in the instant then it is gone.
Easy, takes less than 10 minutes for me to get my face done (eyebrow lip and chin - come back and talk to me when you grow a beard ;p)

You can do it yourself at home, use HOT wax, not strip. And buy a tub of wax, not any of the wands or pre-coated strip things.

Nair it. They have a specific one for upper lip.

I get mine waxed now. I would sometimes get my brows waxed, mostly dealing with plucking them, but it was my hairy lip that now makes me get a regular booking. Lip waxing does not add much to the price. It is a bit owie, but worth it. I am happy to sacrifice other things to get waxed every 3 weeks.

i was in denial for years about my top lip. some of DHs friends would even comment on it! i would get so angry and upset. so one day when i was getting my brows waxed, i asked for lip.. and never looked back. i'm a SOOK when it comes to pain.. and it's really not even bad. i can't believe i let myself be in denial for so many years... mustaches on ladies is just a no no IMO :lol: i hate it!! i have been using the wax strips at home and it's DESTROYING my lip, do NOT buy them.. i'm not sure what to do.. wax at my normal place or use nair removal cream.. i just cbf going to the salon often.. does nair removal cream work? does it make it spikey? ughhh gross

Nads is a necessity in my bathroom cabinet, I swear my moustache comes in overnight! I Nair right before bed, and all the redness is gone by morning. I hafta use it on my beard as well, because really, what's a beard without a moustache? I use the wax wand for my eyebrows though, it's much easier than having depilatory cream near your eye for 10 minutes.

I use the nair cream and it's great! Quick and easy and the tube lasts a long time :)

I tried hair removal cream once. Gave me a chemical burn. So steer clear of that if you have sensitive skin!

Just do a test patch on the most sensitive area. I stupidly did my eyebrows as well as my upper lip. Upper lip was okay, that was where I tested, eyebrows were fried.

I got mine waxed but when my PCOS was at its worst I was needing it waxed weekly which added up in cost and was so painful plus my skin was not coping as having to get it done so often. I took the plunge and decided to get laser - It costs me the same as a wax and I am so impressed with the results. I have had 3 sessions so far and they said I would need 8-10. The first 3 have been 2 weeks apart but in between no hair has grown back. They say if its hormonal it may not work or last as long but the way I see it is I am paying the same price so who cares if I do end up getting more laser. It doesn't even hurt as much as waxing.

Laser it!! I used to wax, but laser has basically got rid of it all together!! It's great!!!

But check out so you get a reputable laser place :) I use a place with drs who assess you first and nurses who do the laser. Now I only go every ten weeks for a quick check in, but chin and lip are WAy better!!

How do you find a reputable laser place? How would I know if they were dodgy?

Victorian cosmetic Institute is where I go - you could check their website for a start if you are not in Melbourne at least it would give you an idea :)

Yes I second the IPL. I got it lasered about 4 years ago and it worked pretty well but they could not seem to get that under the nose bit so I wax it myself. I second the "don't use strips". I bought a hot wax without strips to do my bikini area (I think it was a Nads one) and it was perfect for my mo.

i have always thought about IPL but never believed it worked :o. how much is it roughly for each session? (for lip) if anyone knows :P

I've done laser hair removal, but as the hair is pretty fine it didn't work as well as the underarms did. But the shadow isn't quite as dark as it once was (the boys at school were so jealous of my moustache back in the day).

Plucking is a bit painful, but waxing is great. As the hair isn't as thick/dark as the eyebrows it lasts a lot longer.

I can't use hair removal cream, but given the stench of it I wouldn't want it right under my nose anyway.

My waxing/beauty place is looking at getting in the equipment so they can do lasering. I think I would trust them as the owner is pretty at research and training.

Im not even menopausal yet and thanks to my south european ancestors I have quite an evident mo too! (I can't imagine what its gonna look like once i do hit menopause :P)
anyway, I wax it myself with the hot wax, it takes maybe 5 minutes, and if you do it regularly enough its not so painful to do. And then in between I just pluck out any strays!

The only thing that fills me with more dread than getting it waxed at the salon is the thought of going at it with hot wax myself!! It can only end in tears.

I've bought the nair stuff, will test it rigorously before applying to my face, and will make lasering plans once I've got a couple of months' run where I don't have appointments all over the place.

It's so quick getting it waxed and I personally don't find it any worse than any other area. Waxing doesn't really phase me though. I get mine done every 5-6 weeks along with my eyebrows and have done for a good 10 years or so. It really is worth the small amount of pain and I find it grows a lot slower than my eyebrows.

MD only thing with laser is it is not supposed to be exposed to sun for a few days later. I got mine done in winter to avoid the sun.

Nurses at my clinic say good sunscreen should be okay - as long as you are not sunbathing ;)

Waxing the mo.... Hurts WAY more than chin or eyebrows... Professional OR DIY..., just warning you..... ;) but I've done it, more than once..... So it can be done.... I just got a sweaty lip and the wax wouldnt stick properly ;) lmao.

Ps.... I found the best wax was the Nair as well... Purple hot wax stuff for sensitive skin.... Still use it on my eyebrows. No cotton strips required, so easy to use :) Xox

LOL, I will have to check them out. My mo has been irritating me for a while now! Since I went off the pill 3 years ago it has gotten worse (maybe the pcos getting all out of control?). How much did it cost??

I have been bleaching mine for years now and I'm tired of doing it!!

they are in Berwick, and it's $138 or something like that for Chin and upper Lip.... nurses are lovely (but of course ALL beautiful and full make up etc....) essentially it IS for beautiful people, but I never feel weird and out of place (becuase of course, I too am a beautiful person.... :rofl: NOT!) check out their website anyway... the PCOS means it has taken longer than expected, and I still need to go back, without all the hormose stuff it essentially would only be 6 - 8 sessions (that's what they quoted... before I knew I had PCOS... :( ) anyway.... totally worth it!!
